DIY Gravity Retaining Wall - How I built this retaining wall myself

  • I finished building this diy retaining wall a few months ago and wanted to have it checked before posting this video. I had two contractor friends stop by and check it out! A permit is not required in my area unless its higher than 4ft (its right at 4ft) so no permit was acquired. I did not do geo grid as the wall is under height needed for that process and did a dry stack gravity wall for ease and budget. I had a few bids to have this done and demand is so high in my area that the prices were way out of our budget. So I decided to give this a go on my own. Its still looking amazing and we are so happy with the process. I will have a list of supplies here:

I used 126 today and my land scaper wanted $3,500 to build the wall. I ordered them for $370 delivered from lowes and had it built myself in one day. He was a one man operation, if you put that into an hourly rate he wanted somewhere in the $200 an hour range. That’s just disgusting.

By far the best video for DIY. Everything is explained. I see so many videos that have excavators, tractors, or bobcats. If Im attempting to do something the first time, I'm not getting any of that equipment. It's shocking how many people make videos that just give you bits and pieces of the information that is needed. Great video. Thank you

As an internet know it all, I wanted to find something to criticize but this DIY video is actually pretty good. I do want to mention the no permit under 4 feet issue... you do have a surcharge because the house is right above the wall, most city would require a permit for this project. Also you are only showing the "easy" part which is laying down stuff, please give the person credit for moving these heavy blocks to where it needs to be, that's actually 80% of the muscle work.

This may be a dumb question, but how were you able to determine that none of the weight from your house would be on the retaining wall? I have a very similar situation, and based on your landscape, I'm pretty sure I'm a couple cities away from you, and even have the same home builder. I just want to be extra confident before beginning this project :') Thanks!
