  • Duke Levine's resume is filled with a catalog of stellar solo albums, high-profile sideman gigs, and essential session work. We have Tom Bukovac to thank for making this interview happen, as he had requested Duke on a recent session here in Nashville, that gave us a chance to catch up in person with the Boston-area great. To kick off, we begin with a discussion of his latest gig, touring with Bonnie Raitt. Via the new gig, he has had his first experience with using in-ear monitors and having amps off-stage. We also cover his early gigs with Jonatha Brooke & The Story, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and how he got a record deal in the early 90s. Levine also talks about the eternal tone hunt, covering his move away from using compressor pedals to replacing them with low-gain overdrive pedals. We also cover his pedal board where he uses a Radial switcher to keep his tone as pure as possible by removing unused items from his chain.

Just saw Duke with Bonnie Raitt live last night. Duke's playing is so soulful and perfect fit with Bonnie. It was a great show, Bonnie was great of course, and Duke was just stellar!

I saw the Raitt show in Sept. in a great venue. I hadn't known about Duke going in. But coming out my head was reeling from the perfection of her band and his playing. It was a terrific show!

When I heard Tom say that he was excited to get Duke to fly in for a session I had never heard of him. Seeing him play here, I can see why anybody would be excited to have him play. I like your playing very much Mr. Levine! Good interview Zac! Thanks for introducing me to his music!

Duke's solo on The Story's 'So Much Mine' remains my high water mark for pop guitar playing. It's absolutely flawless. Thanks for the great interview!

That faux-steel playing without getting all bendy is fantastic. Beautiful!

Discovered Duke in the last year or so and found this episode so refreshing. Thanks Zac! You manage to get a guitar player is gear fix as much as you chase down the origin and story of the player. Always great.

Mr Levine popped up on my Jeff Beck Pandora channel a couple’s of years ago. What a great player and now seeing him seems like a very humble guy. After watching this, it turns out Duke and I have a mutual friend from Austin. Great interview!

I also saw him with Bonnie Raitt. Had heard him before and was so happy to see him again. One of the guitarists I admire so much. On my top 5 list. Just gets so much out of the instrument.

    Good interview Zac!
My dad taught me an old fiddle song when I was 5, and it required hybrid playing. So I just thought it was how you are supposed to play. And he taught everybody that. Starting with Eddie Cochran in 1954. Then my uncle Geno Burbank.
I just figured everybody used a pick and fingers. Jerry Reed Georgia Sunshine was my favorite record, until I heard Luxury Liner in 1979. Mom had those records. I didn't know what a thumb pick was so I thought Jerry played like that too. And I was 9 years old in 79, and that Emmylou record was mind boggling. Its cool to know Duke dug that one too. That was actually released before the Rockpile, Dave Edmunds/Nick Lowe stuff.
I can't imagine playing guitar without doing it without all the fingers on my right hand. It was an interesting question I've never heard anybody ask before.

Zak that chair is way too short. Your knees are above your hips. Back problems? Ergonomics!
