I have the old non XL ninja foodi smart grill. I use the probe all the time for steaks and whatnot. Works great and I've verified with another probe. It is slower to register but not enough to matter, and its accurate.
Note that because your cooking from both sides at once, your meat temp will go up twice as much in carryover. 10-15 up on a normal grill, becomes 30 degrees up when cooking with an air fryer.
Another note, at least on my model, when your not cooking. or while your resting the meat, you can hold down the button for 3 seconds and it will show you the temp currently on the probe. Useful if you want to watch the temp go up during carryover.

    • @JasonStillwell
      @JasonStillwell Před 21 dnem +1

Also you can test your probes without making food. Just heat up a bowl of water in the microwave. Put both probes in and compare. Heat the water some more to compare at a higher temp as well. I did have a bad wired probe, once. but it was a different common brand.

A good way to check the calibration of those Temp Probes is to put em in your mouth and measure body temp.98.6
I trust that more than an ice test.
Also If it turns out the Ninja's probe is off and u wish the probe feature worked as it should but don't want to be charged an insane amount from Ninja or any Tech shop to get it right, There are very high odds it can be fixed fairly easily.
One easy work around would be to do the body temp test. And set the target temps higher or lower from the difference from the test ,
ie. if the probe reports 10 degrees below 98.6 adjust your target temp 10 degrees higher.
That will be fine if the difference is constant.
Do the probe test multiple times to see if its constant or jumping around.
If its jumping around then none of the work a rounds will be reliable.
A deeper trouble shooting would be required.
Another workaround to make the displayed temps accurate:
The resistance changes inside the probe according to temp. If their probes with the "rated" resistance is way off from what the circuit requires, Then the temp will be off.
Put a potentiometer (variable resistor 10-20K) in series with either positive or ground wire of the probe.
With that u can adjust the pot to dial in 98.6 .
if the internal resistance of the probe is to high, you put the POT on both the Positive and Neg wires( resulting in a parallel type connection)
That will lower the resistance of the probes "way off value" ,and make that even adjustable ..
The first thing i would do is to open the unit and see if there already is a POT near the Probe connector, Maybe they don't even adjust them in production. No POT there? Then follow that to the controlling circuitry and see if the POT is there.
If no Pot is present , check around for a neighbor who has an electronics workbench set up.
He can very easily WIP UP A BREAD BOARD INTERFACE with the POT .
If don't feel like opening up the unit, Then just build the interface with both series and parallel modes of the potentiometer (POT).
its cheap enough to do it like that also.
    It would be:
the Interface plugs into the Ninja port, and the probe would connect to the the interface. less than 5.00 in parts would do it.
    Dial in the 98.6
    and happy cooking.
I ordered one from watching your review on the older on. It arrives tomorrow.
After seeing yours and others , i already assumed its gonna need the interface to dial in the correct temps.( if that's the problem)
Its an easy fix and may be worth it for someone maybe (if thats the problem)
i will Update this post if i have to do it to my unit when it arrives to say if its definitely the problem or not
    Its a fantastic feature.

I just bought the newer model and did a test compared to my ThermoPro Instaread thermometer and it was identical I used a glass of ice water and they both read around 33-34 Farenheight.. I had the exact same issue with my previous original Ninja Foodi Pro grill and sent it back under warranty. They sent me a brand new one and I tested the probe with a glass of ice water and it was dead on accurate. They have a great warranty service. So I would suggest taking advantage of that.

I have several Ninja devices with the built-in probe. What I normally do, given the known inaccuracies, is either set to Manual and then set degrees 15-20 degrees below my real target goal. I will then keep an eye on the device. When it gets within 10-degrees of set temp, I start checking with one of my other temp probes just to be on the safe side. I have no clue what the heck Ninja was thinking when they did the Chicken Preset for 170F. That in itself is overdone. Most of the US prices on these devices is only around $20 difference between non-probe vs BI-probe. Even given the inaccuracy of the BI probes, it is nice to have imo because it allows me to not have to hover as much.

Abt the steak & the ProbeGate. When using regular propane grill, I end up with med-rate steaks using grill at 400F, doing 4 minutes per side, for avg side steak. I use a Costco griddle plate inside of the grill - more thermal mass, better heat transfer & searing effect, MUCH easier to clean, no mess inside of the grill & on the grates. Highly recommended.
The Ninja XL (which I too, now own), IIRC, gets the inside of the grill to 450F, on its default HIGH GRILL setting. So right there, 8m is bit too long for med-rare, for that size steak methinks. May be 6 minutes would get you the med-rare output. Admittedly, 6m is on short side, not leaving much room for error. So instead, it might make sense, to change the grill itself to MEDIUM heat, for cook time around 8m.
None of it explains the 50F+ discrepancy that was observed when cooking the chicken breast and the steak in the video. May be the probe itself is hosed, bad/contaminated junction weld that retards the read-out.

Guys, you are awesome, I really liked your videos. Will you also do like a tips&tricks kinda videos specifically for indoor grills and airfryers? That would be great. (Maybe you do but I couldn't see in the channel.)
By the way, for the probe, I saw some videos with the pro version (probably the probe is the same because it seems like a pretty standard thermocouple) and it was just consistent in the manual measurement mode. Maybe, It could be a good idea with side to side manual mode testing with the probe and thermometer you have. Anyway...
For the FG551 vs. DG551, I couldn't see your new video but I wanna buy Dg551, and I really wonder if there is a down side of the 2nd gen. Because 2nd Gens are not always better than the 1st even manufacturers always claims so. :) Which version would you recommend? I don't know for the difference between the models. I just tried checking with no luck. It might be one model having a probe and one not? I've used both generations now and I would say all things being equal, go with the 2nd gen if for no other reason than a better user interface. That being said, if you find the 1st gen at a significantly lower cost, I wouldn't hesitate to go with that.

Got one of these. Cooked chicken legs, using the probe. Those werent too big, and no matter how you insert the probe, it will be way too close to either the outside surface of the leg or to the leg bone. End result - legs came out may be 1/3 under cooked. The probe reached the temp way too quickly (reading being affected by the probe's proximity to the bone or the outside surface). So, dont use the probe with smaller pieces of paultry/beef etc.

Every bit of this video was great, except the part with the probe. This is not a fair comparison of probe accuracy, you should have realized that the minute you saw a 55 degrees temperature difference. A probe measures at the tip, so you should try to align the two. If you want to compare try to boil some water or heat up some cooking oil and judge the probes side by side. Probes famously work better on thicker cuts. You can get good results with this probe, but it takes some practice. The probe is not smart. It cannot intelligently tell you the state of your steak. It can only inform you of the temperature at the point you inserted it and Ninja should make a better effort at explaining this. As with any tool or device, using them for an extended period of time, is the only way to figure out their strengths and weaknesses. If you cooked 5 steaks back to back, the last will likely be a lot better than the first.

Not looking at the temperature immediately when you pull the probe out. You do understand when you're cooking that hot that fast? There is a 20 degree increase in carry over cooking temperature right.. Ask for the stake if you set the smart grill technology on. It pulls a rare steak off at a 103 degrees to account for carry over cooking
