    Hey Tony, that was fantastic! I can’t believe I missed this when you put it up. I had asked for a minor blues on Patreon months ago and wasn’t sure you’d seem my message. Glad you did. Great video and great to see you showing off your jazz, blues AND Bach skills. The kids here call that a flex. Bravo. Thanks

    Another fantastic lesson Sir!! What a great concept you shared for changing from the 1 minor chord to the V chord of the 4 minor. That little half step shortcut gets the improvisor straight into serious jazz vocabulary. Thank for sharing.

    Great vid, one of your best! One little disagreement though, your comment after playing a repeating figure and calling it practicing. No man, that sounds like a jazz elitist talking. In the real world that's a big part of doing a hot solo especially on organ which I specialize in. Everybody from Jimmy Smith to Charles Earland in jazz to Greg Rollie with Santana and Chester Thompson with Tower of Power in the rock/funk world will do that to build the excitement. It's a great trick to pull out. I've pulled applause out of the audience by riding that for half a chorus or something. The whole band will go with you and build that sucker up. Then come back on the bridge or turnaroud to bring it home.

    This is very cool Tony! I can follow this pretty well. I've always liked minor blues but you give this much more detail than I realised was possible. I've always liked the kind of "Spy movie" themes being some kind of minor blues type thing. A couple of good ones I reckon are the "Music for Columbo theme" by "Gille Melle" and the "prescription murder" theme by Dave Grusin from the very first Columbo pilot episode. PS My pal Ben Waters (famous boogie woogie pianist talks about muscle memory. He can play boogie in many different keys based on this). English jazz pianist Dudley Moore used to play 5 and 6 note "triplets" Super cool! and his minor blues composition ""Sooz Blooz" is worth a look.

    I was thinking I never heard BH mention the minor melodic scale then I remembered he just uses the minor 6 with the #5 so you get that but what about the Maj 7? right now its slipping my mind .... its in minor melodic... its in harmonic minor... I guess just think minor six and diminished added but at the moment im stuck on that maj 7. How does Barry arrive at the maj 7?
    Just picked up the instrument, and all I can think is that major 7 of the relative minor is the sharp 5 of the major? Does that kind of explain it?

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  Před rokem +1

      Idk, many ways to analyze the same thing.

    • @TheRealSandleford
      @TheRealSandleford Před rokem

      @@TonyWinston yea now I got it. just a scale made from putting a diminished a whole step above either a maj/minor 6 or a dominant/dominant b5 chord.

  • @TheRealSandleford
    @TheRealSandleford Před rokem

    Love your channel... question.. what is minor melodic? just playing with wording? you just mean like a major scale with a flat third right? Kind of interesting how just flatting the 3rd changes the whole game.

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  Před rokem

      Yes, just flat the third and I agree that the modes of this scale are quite different sounding than the modes of the major scale

  • @jean-pierrebourlier9154

    It’s not the theme of the video , but could you tell us the name of the tune of Bach ? I like it very much
