    No laundry hack, but leave an empty laundry basket in your car so when you go grocery shopping, put the bags in the basket, then bring in the basket instead of trying to carry all the bags.

    Best laundry hack: I put all of my socks in a delicates bag, so they don't get lost. I also do this with undies. If I'm lazy, I'll just dump them into my sock bin within a drawer when I'm done with laundry (most are the same styles, so still easy to find a mate if unsorted). Instead of folding socks, I stack them when I'm not lazy since it doesn't really matter which pair of white socks or black socks I grab. I'll do a stack of White, Black, and other socks.

    The only thing I discovered by washing all colors together: you might want to keep the whites separate to keep them white. The black and blue with always bleed a little bit and the white shirt is a little bit more grey/brown every wash. Not very noticeable, but enough to be really less white after a certain time.

    • @EMILYHERRERA

I use them, especially when I wash whites (because I always end up throwing them in with colors...because I don't have enough white laundry to make a whole load without waiting weeks...because... I HAVE KIDS!! White is a losing battle for the most part! LOL), and feel like they do a great job.

    Reunited sock story. I bought my son a pair of Mickey Mouse socks when he was 5 at Disney. They were so cute, ears stuck out. Immediately after the trip, I washed the pair and one of the socks was MIA. Every time I dumped that sock bag, I hoped for the little guy to return to no avail. Fast forward 25 years...yes 25 years and a completely different house, the mate appeared! I was so happy. Put them together, but with my son now 30....threw them in a donation bag.

    The most important thing when doing laundry is sorting by fabric weight. Lightweight clothes can be destroyed by heavy fabrics. This was a game changer for me... now my clothes look good for so much longer. Eventually, all clothes get worn out, but there is no need to speed up the process.

    I would love a video of hacks for people who have to go to the laundry mat. While these are good some of them only work if you have your own washer and dryer. As a family of 4 going to the laundry mat is a chore that my husband takes on every week as I stay home with the kids, and I want to be able to make life easier for him.

    • @leahrowe847
      @leahrowe847 Před 8 měsíci +3

      I bought big, cloth laundry bags with draw strings (Walmart sells a really good one with a pocket for soap or whatever). Then, I would sort my laundry by color, type, towels, etc (bc I personally think laundry lasts longer when washed that way, but you can sort however you want) into bags & washer types I'd be using at the laundry mat. Yes, that meant I had quite a few bags in various colors, sizes, & such, but that was my particular preference. This system made the laundry easy to carry, as I could just toss it over my shoulder to transport to the car & into the laundromat. As the clothes came out of the dryer, I'd fold, sort by person, & condense into bags & pack tight (using less bags than I went in with, so I could still throw them over my shoulder). I'd usually end up with the towels coming out last, since they take longest to dry (pro-tip, take a clean, dry towel with you, & toss it into the dryer to cut your drying time down significantly), & those pesky last items
      I'd usually just pack up unfolded & take home to fold, since I just wanted to get the heck outta there by then... LOL!
      These bags can also carry hangers, & easily slip over the a group of clothes after hung~ just put draw string at top of hangers to keep everything clean like a dry cleaners bag.
      Hope this helps in some manner...

    • @mamat1213
      @mamat1213 Před 8 měsíci +2

      Agreed!!! I have a few, some of which match Cas’ recommendations:
      -Depending on how often you wash/how much you have, you could set up personal laundry bins and wash separately to keep sorted. There are 3 of us so I never did that, we had one bathroom (where we get dressed anyhow) and community Hampers in there. I’m militant about dirty clothes in the hamper only so they will get washed, I know when it’s full and don’t have to search all over for clothes lol
      -if he can, go on OFF hours. Early am or pm. Weekends are going to be hectic, maybe early Sunday am won’t but most folks wash fri-sun or after work. Might not matter for a small wash house
      -Wear a Fanny pack for those quarters lol! Or at least pants with deep pockets. I would get them at the bank each Mo instead of dealing with the machines which could be broken
      -Get those huge nylon Fabric laundry bags like the other commenter said! They were pricey at my laundromat ($8-10 each) but have lasted me yearsssss! Easy to toss in the big washers and empty out…then put the bag inside and wash/dry that too! Also easier to get in and out of the car/cart and in the house as well
      -Depending on mobility/house set up, a folding roll cart to pile laundry bags in and roll to/from the car/house. Also useful when they run out of baskets at the laundromat which is the worst 😩
      - lightweight wash soap! Either powder, pods or laundry sheets! I hated struggling with liquid soap jugs or big boxes of tide, so if you must, just measure enough for what you’re washing and put in clean water bottles, ziplocs or containers
      -I didn’t have the $ to sort much (doing 4 small loads of clothes instead of 1 huge one for ex) but would do a mega load of clothes, load of bedding, load of towels. 3 total in those large laundry bags. Dry and pack them back up together also to keep organized
      -My kids do the sock game as well but that mesh zip bag idea worked well for us! Undies in one, socks in another (or 2). I also got rid of most of the cute socks and we have like 30 pair of identical light grey or identical black no show socks. EASY to match and put away
      -might not be an option for you but I was able to get a small portable washer that I keep on bathroom counter, I use it to wash delicates and small loads of anything urgent (usually PE clothes or last minute must have stuff 🙄) also allows me to wash the bras separate (they love to wrap around other clothes lol) and hang them dry in peace. You also don’t have to worry about items that can’t go in the dryer, just wash at home! Mine was about $100, spins clothes 90%dry, takes about 5gal water and has no hook ups. Drain right into the sink with a stocking to catch lint and you’re set!
      -make it a self care time out ritual! It really just takes about 5-10 min to get everything set up then wait 30 for the wash or 45-60 min for the dry. I brought headphones, would watch a show, or make calls in the car, read, clean my car, if you can spare the $ go grab a bite or some coffee solo, make the most of that down time
      -take advantage of that extra towel/blanket time the other commenter mentioned to fold and pack your regular clothes. I’d have those ready to go by the time the towels were done!
      -for big bulky items, dry separately. Even if more fit, I’d wash together but dry one blanket at a time so I’m not dealing with surprise wet spots 😂

  • @juliegolick
    @juliegolick Před 8 měsíci +10

    So many of these tips rely on you having a washer/dryer in your home. Can you do a similar list for people who have to use a laundromat or a communal laundry room? My best tip for communal laundry rooms is to USE TIMERS so that you can go home while your load is on, but you'll reminded to go back to the laundry room when the load needs to be changed over or is done. If you have to walk to a laundromat (as opposed to driving), my best tip is to get a rolled grocery cart and put your laundry in there, so that you can roll it along behind you instead of carrying it in your arms, where it can get very heavy.

    My Grandma taught my mom and I that if you don’t want stinky rags after using them, to rinse them out with really cold water. This really works for the “kitchen rag smell”! My laundry room is right off the kitchen, so I rinse the rags in cold water and chuck them directly in the washer (if there’s nothing in it) when It needs washing. Hope this is helpful!

    I used to not hate laundry, but grew to absolutely loath doing it. I never really understood why. Then I found you and Dawn (minimal mom) and I implemented Dawn's laundry plan in a similar way. I bought a 3 sorter laundry hamper that is very pretty and sitting to the left of my office desk and to the left of that is the door to my office. Right outside that door is the washer/dryer area. So I labeled the 3 compartments "Towels and Linens", "In Dryer", "Hang Up". Everyone in my house is responsible to bring their own clothes and towels and put into the right section. I check every day now and when a section is full, I do that load. If it's hang up items, those get put up the following day when dry. Dryer items get dried and put up that same day. I only run 1 load per day (if there is one). There are no other hampers or baskets in the house, except 1 basket with the hangers in it sitting on the dryer for hang up items. For the first time ever, I'm keeping up with all the laundry! I realized that having to run around the house getting everybody's clothes and towels etc, then sorting them all in my office floor, and trying to run them in a day or 2 was driving me nuts. I'd end up with things I wanted hung up in the dryer - and my husband's work clothes are all hung to dry or they shrink on him. I can't tell you how many times he's gotten upset that his clothes got dried. Now I don't even think about sorting - it's all sorted and if something is in the wrong place and I don't catch it, I just don't fret over it at all!!! This system has been an absolute game changer for me!!

    I purged my underwear and sock drawer (tossed some that never got worn, why was I keeping those? Then put non-favorites away for replacements later). Having only my favorite panties available and favorite socks (same style, different colors, so the matching game is fast or mismatched works fine) has been invaluable. No more being upset that my favorites aren’t clean cause if I look in the drawer and see one or two pairs left, boom I know I need to do laundry cause it’s “laundry today or commando tomorrow”.

    As a fellow ADHD lazy person, our stacked washer/dryer are in a corner so I got those wall mounted liquid/powder dispensers and mounted them next to the washer’s pullout detergent drawer. It saves me steps but also mentally saves me from turning around and getting threshold syndrome distracted seeing the rest of the room.

      @@lauralaforge558 I love that name for it! I suspect it's when I go into the bedroom to fetch the empty cup I left, but realise I've not made the messy bed, then think it's about time I changed the sheets anyway, so I strip the bed, but can't remember where I left the laundry basket, so go looking for it downstairs, where the open box of tools is all over the place from where I was going to mend the tap, so I get the spanner to go fix the tap because that's not done yet but before I turn off the water I should really make myself a cup of tea, but where's the cup? Oh yes - it's in the bedroom....

    If you "hang-to-dry" your laundry, then sorting beforehand can save a lot of time. Some have mentioned small mesh laundry/delicates bags for other reasons, and I would totally agree! For example, I use them to sort socks or underwear as I take them off. If I'm doing a load of t-shirts, then I can add the bag(s) to the load. Once it's done, sorting to hang items to dry is easier because everything is already separated. How you hang socks is much different than t-shirts, right? It's just simpler. Sometimes, sorting may take longer, but in my case, it actually saves time. Just a thought for those without a dryer or who prefer to air dry...

      Yess! I started hang-drying my socks (so they would last longer- my feet demand very specific and somewhat expensive socks these days, lol!) and it was incredibly annoying and tedious to do until I started putting them in a delicates bag. Getting them all out of the way one after the other instead of hunting for them first really makes a huge difference.

      I remember when I was learning laundry, many moons ago, when spray stain remover was required my mom was adamant that it was much more effective to treat right away. So I have my pretreatment hanging on laundry basket. I treat when I take the item off. since I have to wash every 2 to 3 days, it's good and treated (I often spray again when I'm getting a load sorted out just to be sure. The only stains that get treated differently are the protein based kind. Unfortunately, my skin disorder makes me prone to have lots of little spots and if I wore something that was a light color, I have to treat asap! Then it's meat tenderizer to the rescue!

    Congrats on passing your exam! One of the best things I ever did for my laundry routine was only doing one load at a time. Start to finish. I used to throw on a second load while the first was drying. Nope. I'd end up with a mountain to put away and it never got done. Now I don't put on another load until the first one has been put away. Sounds simple but it's been a game-changer for me. I also use mesh bags for underwear and anything that shouldn't go in the dryer. Really easy to spot when it comes to changing a load over instead of having to dig through everything.

    I don't sort anymore either, except towels and bedding. I have, however had some red clothing fade even after having been washed before. My go to product for that is ColorCatchers! I was skeptical at first but they really do work! So now anytime I'm washing something red, or even a new clothing item that's black or dark blue, I just throw in a two or three (usually 3) of the ColorCatchers and they catch all the fading!

    When hanging Joe's shirts, you can also put the hanger through the arm hole for short sleeved shirts.
    -step one: pick up shirt by shoulders.
    -step 2: stick one of your arms through both sleeve holes horizontally.
    -step 3: grab a hanger with the hand that is through the shirt holes. Hold it by one of the long ends.
    -step 4: arm with shirt sleeve and a hanger then pulls the hanger backwards through the sleeve.
    -step 5: *pop* the hook of the hanger pops through the neck hole.
    Ta-Da!

    😂 I love your shenanigans, Cass! I've been doing many of th hacks you shared already. Hadn't heard about the foil, but going to do it now! I don't have a front load washer but I know what to do for it now. My laundry hack is rolling baskets and a magnet on the back of the dryer door. A few years ago I got tired of my door bouncing back at me while trying to empty the darn thing and said, "I'll fix you 🤬" stuck a heavy duty magnet from the garage on it and VOILA! As for rolling baskets, I'm chronically ill and need to save energy where I can, rolling baskets allow me to just push them where they need to be. Oh and last tip. We wash 90% of the shirts inside out and I use to turn them all right side out and put it on hangers. Not anymore! I figured out that if I put my hands in the shirt like I'm going to turn it right-side out that I can place my hanger in the neck hole and then turn out on the hanger, one swift motion! Now I do it with like 10 shirts loaded on my arm at one time. Saves time and energy.

I use my deep freezer next to my dryer as a folding table, and whenever I have an extra sock, or I need to throw one out, I can check my lost sock box. I just make sure to keep the socks folded in half so I can see them easily like looking through a book shelf. Easy peasy.

    I have a few laundry hacks are to put panties/underwear, knee highs, socks into a delicates bag and put chenille seaters into a delicates bag. Also, each person in our house is responsible for their own laundry. My son has done his laundry since he was 12 years old. I roll my socks together so they stay together and do not get misshapen. I also roll my tshirts and shorts, instead of folding them. That way I can see them in the drawer. I use stacking hangers to hang my shirts, sweaters, delicates, pants, and leggings. They take up less space in my tiny closet, but are still easy to see what I have.

    I take my empty hangers to the laundry room. When shirts or pants come out of the dryer, they go straight on a hanger! Also my family is very tall, so I only damp dry clothes because I don’t want any shrinkage. If they go straight to the hanger, I can hang them to finish drying. Works great. The dryer balls I’ve tried tended to go flying out of the dryer when I was pulling out clothes.
    My solution is to keep a couple of clean dry bath towels handy. I throw the dry towel in with the wet clothes. It fluffs up the clothes, drying doesn’t take as long, and it’s easy to pull out when the load is done.

    What changed my laundry life was getting rid of multiple laundry baskets.I now have only one. This forces me to put away clean laundry. No more baskets of clean laundry everywhere. I made a rule for myself that will not start a load of laundry unless the last load is put away. This means no more laundry getting funky in the machine because the dryer and basket are full. I also agree with Cas, put hangers all together do you can grab them and take them to the dryer. Decluttering my clothes to only what fits and feels good. A hamper in every room and only washing those things together. One load a day. I also have a separate basket for dirty socks do they don’t get separated.

    My biggest laundry hack is to spot clean with a tide pen so I don’t have to wash 😂😂😂 but seriously putting away clothing that is clean is major time saver.

    I use those laundry detergent sheets which I put in a magnetic basket that I stick to the side of the washer. Also, I bought all white socks. They all match so I don't have to match socks.

    Congrats on your passing of the course for First Responder! woohooo!!! thanks for the laundry tips! one of my favorites is the hangers...take one shirt off and put the hanger in a cluster with others by themselves...this makes its a snap to hang your clothes back up. I didn't know about the foil! Great tip!!!
