Life is difficult and expensive in a country that's economically developed
Economic development generates wealth, but it matters a lot what happens to this wealth. When enough of it is used to expand opportunities for everyone by providing access to things like quality health and education, or smart and sustainable public infrastructure, then everyone benefits. But when most or all of it is concentrated in a small elite abusing the institutions of a corrupt government, then the people who are not part of that elite will inevitably suffer, yes.
Nope, economically developed countries pay more wages and salaries, that's why it's easy to succeed in developed countries

South Africa is one of few upper middle class economy in Africa and highly industrialized with a diversified economy. That's why it's on top despite it's challenges.
