  • If you visit the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia, this is one of the stories you'll likely hear.
Twin brothers, Roy and Ray Stevens were inseparable from birth. Both of them volunteered for service in the National Guard for the spending money they were able to earn on weekends and during the Summer months. They were members of A Company, 116th Infantry, 29th Infantry Division.
Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, they began to train in earnest--at military bases up and down the eastern seaboard of the United States. And their company was chosen to spearhead the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944--on Omaha Beach.
In two parts, this is the unforgettable story of Roy and Ray Stevens. This is Part I.

I was in Bedford to visit the memorial last weekend. I visited Roy's grave before leaving Bedford. He and his fellow soldiers were very important in freeing the people of Europe.
