In this video, I show you how to make a simple, natural, and healing lip balm using fresh lemon balm. The recipe is from my book, A Woman's Garden, and it's great for helping to speed up the healing of cold sores or just for everyday use. It has a beautiful texture!
The recipe begins with harvesting fresh lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) leaves, drying them, using them to make an infused oil, and then blending it into a silky smooth lip balm. This is a beginner to intermediate-level skincare recipe and makes five 10ml pots of lip balm.
📚 The recipe also appears on page 122 of my book. Here's where to get it:

I would like to add that for cold sores I have found that grinding up licorice root in an old blade type coffee grinder and then mixing that powder with some olive oil in a mortal and pestle and grinding til the cows come home…add that to rewarmed purchased lip balm or mix it with your lemon balm creation. I have not had a full blown cold sore since I started doing this 6 years ago.
I love that you rinse outside so any insects get a better chance to survive
Lmao ok
Makes sense under a outdoor tap cause home grown is messy!
Yes, that is the sweetest thing ❤
This plant is crazy invasive! Mine is growing all around between my raised beds. Any that gets inside the raised bed gets pulled out immediately. I don’t love the smell of it fresh, but it tastes completely different dried. It pushed out all my other varieties of mint. The bees love it.
Anything that helps our beautiful bees....❤
Beautiful, thank you!
thanks so much for your excellent video and information and calm approach!
Love this recipe! I’ve been following you for years and I should say thank you! Your soap was one of the first recipes I’ve ever tried and your tutorials are so helpful.

This really works
Nice one Tanya. Thanks
Many thanks, John!
Wow thank you for sharing this leaves lemon balm👏👌❤️
My pleasure 🙂
Can't wait to make this. I grow lemon balm in my community garden and the leaves are huge right now. I wash it outside as well, shake it, leave on a few paper towels under the rear window of my car for 1-2 days-depending on the weather. I dry mint this way too-no need for a dehydrator and the car smells nice.
In a few years it will spread every where
Lovely, thank you
Thank you
Thank you i ordered your book x

I made this lip balm and everyone including me loves it! I purchased your book and it is great! I’m going to put in a spiral herb garden this Spring.
I'm incredibly pleased on all counts 💚 🙂 I made a video showing how to build the herb spiral in the book, if you need any help building it.
@@Lovelygreens Thanks. I did watch the video as well! I’m zone 6 U.S.A Pennsylvania so it’s still Winter here but I can’t wait until Spring to get started!
An Ahmazing herb❣🌱🥰
Simple and brilliant. Thank you will definitely give this a try. Lip balm is so important as a gardener i am always exposed to the elements and lips dry up. Any tips for winter fingers that split from working outside?
Very nice sharing

Love your channel and already made a few recipes ❤
Hello Tanya, I just discovered your you tube channel and went straight to your website. It is all looking marvellous! I just had a question about the beeswax. I have leftover (clean)beeswax from encaustic painting. Do you think I could use that? Thanks to you I am now considering buying a dehydrator, which one do you use or what would you recommend?
Thank you for your beautiful website and videos! And you live in my favorite part of the world also! Greetings from France
I shared this 3 times 😊
Thank you!
@@Lovelygreens excellent idea 💡
Sounds like a great recipe, thank you! TeresaSue.
You're very welcome 🙂💚
I thought i'd give this a try, looks amazing. Are you quite sure about adding a few drops of lemon balm essential oil? Just in case it gets in my mouth? Thank you.
Yes, it's fine. Natural peppermint lip balm is made with essential oil, too :)
This looks like a great recipe. Thank you!
I've been looking for stainless steel lip balm pots, but haven't found any. Where did you get yours?
I purchased a stainless steel dog dish that fits inside one of my pans. I only use it for making salves and things...never for the dog.🙂
What are all the measurements? This is great!
Been following you for years. I love your channel. Where can I purchase your book?
Thank you 🙂 You can find it on Amazon, various other online booksellers, and even some physical booksellers. I list some here lovelygreens.com/a-womans-garden-grow-beautiful-plants-and-make-useful-things/
Hi Tanya,
After watching your video, I went to Lowes the next day and bought the Lemon balm seeds. They are just sprouting as I plan to use in soap and homemade laundry liquid.
I don’t want to sound impatient, but how long before I can get a harvest? 😂
Do you have a link for your book for Ireland ?
So do you have to use a dehydrator to make this balm? Any other alternatives?
Hi, where do you buy stainless steel jar? Cannot find them. Thank you ❤️
Hi Tanya! Lovely videos with simple-to-follow explanations!
Could you tell me, what is the brand of your food dehydrator?
Thank you!
:)
Thank you, and I'm glad that you enjoyed it! It's a Stockli branded food dehydrator, but it's old, and I'm not sure if it's around any longer.
I do have your book, love it. Would it be ok to freeze dry the lemon balm leaves?
Sure!
this is awsome, my lemon balm has struggled since moving it into a pot. like it died. then i planted more seeds nothing happnd. sigh. i have to grow in pots now. i cant dig. any tips?- so i was growing it to make this tea. in a teapot, i put fresh lemon cut into slices- skin and all, lemon thyme lemon balm, some fresh ginger, i think that was all. its been a while since i made this, since my lemon balm isnt producing. i prefur to drink this tea cold but one can drink it hot. was great for my lungs.
I made the mistake of growing lemon balm. It's sneaky and shows up everywhere. Bit of a pain. It's trying to threaten my rosemary but she holds her own.
It can really be a thug!
No offense, but who is Drobalar?
Coucou 👋🏻 👋🏻 👋🏻
Formidable partage bravo 😊😊😊
A bientôt
Merci 💚
@@Lovelygreens de rien 😊
Could I use apple mint instead of lemon balm for this recipe? I have a lot of that growing right now lol
Hi! I love your videos and I find this one very interesting. But I have a question : how come this infused oil doesn't develop Clostridium botulinum bacteria? I know this happens when we store things in oil. Is it because the plants are dry?
That's right! Infusing fresh herbs in oil can lead to botulism, but dried herbs are safe since the spores need moisture to live.
I love your hydrator. What kind is it?
It's a Stockli model from over ten years ago. It's really good, but this model is no longer around unless you get it used.
Can you use fresh lemon balm leaves not dried?
Hi I would love to have your book ? How do I get it please😊
Thanks :) there are links in the video description or you can look on your favourite online bookseller for A Woman's Garden by Tanya Anderson
Does anyone know which dehydrator she uses?? I would love to put it on my Christmas List this year but I really don't know which brand to get. And I like the one she uses.
It's an older Stockli model :)
Can I just air dry? I don’t have a food dehydrator
Thank you so much for this informative tutorial. How much beeswax to use and do I melt it the same way…double boiler. Thank you
You can use the same amount, and yes, use the double boiler. Beeswax, in particular, should always be melted using one since it has a high melting point and is also highly flammable.
Do you have a preferred carrier oil for lip balm...for cold sores? Also, can I use a bit of lemon essential oil in the recipe? My lemon balm is coming back in force this year and I am so excited to try this!!
A liquid carrier oil of your choice will work, but my favourite is sweet almond oil. Probably leave the lemon essential oil out if you're using the balm for cold sores, but a drop per tin of lip balm would be fine for "flavoring" normal lip balm. Organic essential oil is best for lip balm 💚
Do u have any salve or cream recipes for psoriasis and comfrey. Thanks elisa
Look for my neem balm recipe - it's in the beauty playlist on my channel page :)
what does it taste like? Thanks for the information
Without added essential oil, there's almost no lemon balm flavor. Just a light clean waxy aroma.
Agree 💚 Castor oil makes an excellent lip gloss!
Excellent video! 🌷 Thanks for sharing.
What kind of olive oil do you use?
How long should you let it sit in the cheese cloth and strainer before squeezing it out ?
Use your favourite olive oil, but I use a good extra virgin olive oil that has at least a year left on its expiration date. As for straining and squeezing, I squeeze when the majority of the oil has already passed through.
@@Lovelygreens Tusind tak! 🌷(a thousand thank yous)
Can you use coconut oil instead of wax?
I am about to make this today! However I am going to try it with my lime balm, not lemon. I’m excited. I do have a question which may seem obvious - but why dry the leaves? Why not stick them in the oil fresh? Will the leaves go yucky and not hold up? I’m curious. Drying my lime balm now. I love this video!
Three reasons - the leaves can mold and introduce microbes into the oil, possibly passing them on to your skin and mouth. Second, fresh leaves may have botulism spores on them, which, again, could pass into the oil and to your mouth as a lip product. Drying leaves kills off microbes on fresh leaves. Third, a tiny amount of water from fresh leaves passes into oil if they're infused together. This moisture speeds up the oxidization process, making any leftover infused oil spoil quicker. Water = rancid oil.
Is it possible to skip the drying process and just use fresh lemon balm?
No, lemon balm is too wet as a leafy herb. That water will get into the oil and can cause all kinds of issues. Early rancidification of the oils and an unpleasant flavor in your lip balm. It can also create enough habitat for microbes to grow.
Lemon balm is a family favourite just for the fragrance. It certainly does spread everywhere unless it is contained. Unfortunately someone let it go and it's everywhere in the gardens.
I love it dried in tisane (herbal infusion frequently misnamed 'tea"). I think I will give the balm a go.
You certainly seem to have enough! 😍 Have fun making use of your romping lemon balm - the lip balm makes great gifts, too 💚
have you used lilac for balms? Mine are starting to bloom and I'd love to use them if the scent can be retained.
I've not, yet, but think it would work!
Great video! May I ask what the difference will be if I left the oil to infuse in the sun instead of in the cupboard? I've been led to believe that oil infusions should be done on a shelf, so it's interesting to see a different method :-)
The UV rays in sunlight can damage the oil and cause it to oxidize/go rancid. Warmth is okay for oil infusions - light is bad.
@@Lovelygreens thank you very much!
Hello! It looks great, but can I ask for how long it lasts? Do I have to, or can I put conservatives in it?
You only use preservatives in formulations (or food!) that contains water. There is no water in this lip balm recipe. As for shelf-life, it's one year or the closest best by dates of the exact ingredients you use to make the recipe with.
What kind of essential oil is all essential 100 pure
What dehydrator do you use? Its a lot sturdier than mine which is plastic, fragile and been mended many times.looking for a new one.lemon balm has gone made in my 1st year of growing..just mad! Thanks!
It's a Stockli model, but it's older - I bought it 12 years ago!
@@Lovelygreens wow!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Can I use fresh leafs ( without dryer) to infuse?
I address this in the video, I believe, and also here: lovelygreens.com/cold-sore-lip-balm-recipe-lemon-balm/
Hi! Can I do fresh Lemon Balm? Without dehydrating ?
No, that's not an option for this recipe. Infused oils made with fresh leaves shouldn't be used in lip care recipes. There's a chance of botulism spores being on the leaves and then growing in the oil. There's no chance of that happening with dried leaves, though.
What do you do with the leaves after the cheese cloth? Is there any other purpose we could get from them?
They're pretty zapped...best just to compost them.
Hello, can I get book in PDF ? Cause I live in Cambodia.
I believe that it's available in Kindle format through Amazon. I, unfortunately, can't share a PDF directly because I have a publisher.
Is there any use for the leaves after the oil is strained from them?
Not much of any benefit, really. Drain as best you can, then add them to the compost pile.
Do you have to dry out lemon balm to make soaps and lip balm?
Yes, for lip products like this. Although it's a low risk, using fresh lemon balm leaves could introduce botulism spores in the oil. Best to use dried!
Can we use cooking oil.. Or it's necessary to use olive oil
If that's all you can afford, then yes, it's possible. Any oil sold for cooking, including most olive oil, is poor quality for skincare, though, and will not have as good a shelf life.
What sub can you do for essential oil ? Lemon?
You can leave it out or substitute with organic peppermint essential oil.
thank you
@@Lovelygreens
Can you dehydrate them in the oven?
Yes, but keep the temperature at its lowest and prop the door open with a potholder so that moisture can escape.
Can I dry the leaves in my microwave or oven?
Microwave would kill the nutrition
