Good memories, Randy. This was the second tournament of the Top 100 season of 1989/90, with the first held a month earlier. I can relate to partially sinking boats to get under bridges, especially at the west end bridge at Lake Mitchell, SD around 30 years ago, using bags of water softener salt for weight and just pumping in or using a bucket to dip lake water into the boat. (I couldn't reach far enough behind the transom to pull the drain plug).

I remember that so clearly. I thought this guy is thinking outside the box. AS a river rat on the Potomac I started fishing the creeks that everyone said was to shallow to get into. I started carrying a hand saw to clear wood that blocked some creeks. (Murasco was one) and it almost always paid off. Thanks Randy

I remember that tournament as well. We had a tournament the same weekend as hurricane Hugo. The first day was canceled. We fished the second day but I honestly don’t remember anyone starting up their big motor because winds were still blowing 25-35 mph and I can’t imagine that there were 6-8 ft swells on the main lake. Oh yeah, that tournament was out of the boat ramp right at the damn. Crazy times!

😂Great Channel Randy. I had just left that bridge that day you sunk your boat. I came back and a guy that lives down in that area told me he seen some guy sink his boat.. I kept up with the standings during the tournament to see who won. Great Job that year.

I was a coangler in that tournament. The talk at the Holiday Inn bar in South Hill about you doing that. The next day, I drew Robert Tucker (Ray Scott would call him "smiling Robert Tucker). We tried to do it in another creek but couldn't get under that bridge. It was a very cool win. Was there a Potomac River top 150 tournament before that Buggs Island tournament? Maybe another year. I can't remember. Anyway, I fished that tournament and one day was canceled because of a hurricane. I believe Hugo.I remember a coangler staying next door won fishing the rat. Loyd Talent comes to mind. I believe Manns started producing it. Fun times back then.

Yes. Although Randy says this was the first tournament of the season, it was the second, of the Top 100's. The Maryland Top 100 on the Potomac was held a month before, in Sept.

Incredible! What the pros will do to win. It’s true about the Rangers. Cut parts of the boat out and they won’t sink (completely). I had a 482V and loved that boat. Wish I never let brother in law borrow it. He burned the 175XRI up because he got into the thick vegetation and clogged water intakes up. The horn was blaring but he ignored it; thinking it was just “low on gas or oil”. 😡 I sold it after that and never got another bass boat. 😢

I was there for the second day launch. I watched the Bassmasters to see what everyone was doing for the rest of the tournament. As I recall, they had a camera record the bridge or you coming out from under the bridge. I mentioned this to you on another of your youtube videos. In 1989, I fished Buggs Island a lot. It was also a big stop for the Redman tournament.

There's a lake here in Ohio, some guys will guess it, where there is a low bridge that is only passable if you flood your boat. I've heard of a few guys who have won a tournament by doing just that. I always turned around when I got there, even though I knew. But I wasn't fishing for $55K. This was in the mid to late 90's, so who knows, maybe they got the idea from you.

You were the "Talk of the Town" in North Carolina... You had guys really brainstorming after that...I can remember many a night staying in Henderson NC for Red Mans and Club Tournaments and guys would be outside talking about what you did... Grassy Creek was my Favorite Creek to fish...When the water got high it was willow bushes or sweet gums or a lil of Both...And a question Randy about Fishing Line...Back Then I used 20# Mono Fluorescent Blue to jig fish...And caught fish everywhere and big fish at that. So does line today like Fluorocarbon really make that big of a difference today on a jig which I kind of consider it to be a reaction bite.

I went back in there the following spring, as water was up about 3 feet in bushes....Could get in without much effort....Caught some good ones on Sluggos....I thought about you as I were back there! Grassy Creek is a great creek...I go, put my boat in at the landing in GC, and fish it all day!

Good old Stanley’s jig with the bigger Gene Laru bottom half of the craw , Stanley’s used to make a pumpkin seed skirt it was brown with black pepper , with that craw worm color kind of like cayenne or pink with red flake , and they used to gobble it up , I was even pitching it over the tops of the shorter willows , I used 20 pound Berkley Tri-Max it was called Photochroich and let me just say this that line was so so strong , great abrasion resistant , but back then all we had was mono , trielene xl was nice but soft and would brake in heavy cover
