I use it regularly in especially in winter when the air is dry.
I use apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle to detangle before wash day and add the essential oils when my scalp is extremely itchy and dry.

Yes it’s better that a cotton towel because a cotton towel causes breakage.
If you do not prefer using a T-shirt you can get a microfiber towel which is safer to prevent hair breaking
