    As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home czcams.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

    How can people give this great video a thumbs down. You gave a very good defined explanation of the art of training dogs to do what they have an instinct for. Dogs were not bred to lye around in a house or chained to a tree . Dogs were bred to do work and in this case to trail rabbits for gathering food. By the way I too trained Beagles exactly like you shown. Thank you.

    That is pretty much how I start my pups also. One trick I have found that works well though, is to blow a whistle when I am training the pup with a hide (which I have saved in the freezer). First I let the pup worry the hide, then I tie the pup up and hide the pelt so it is easy to find. Then, just before I let the pup go, I blow the whistle and tell it to "hunt it up". As the pup progresses and you are able to start bring them out hunting blow the whistle and tell him to "hunt em up". When the pup comes to a check during the day, and you actually see which way the rabbit went (in my case, hares) blow the whistle and get him going in the right direction again. At the end of the day when you want to go home but the pup doesn't, get yourself into a position that the dog can hear the whistle. When it comes to a check, blow the whistle and call the dog. He thinks you have the rabbit and will come to you and you can leash him and go home. The important point is to not always pick up the dog when you blow the whistle but let him continue to hunt throughout the day....that way he will never know it is time to quit! That's a whole lot easier than having to go back at night to pick up your dog! Also, I use the Garmin Astro to keep track of my dog. I don't know how I hunted for so long without one, but of course, I used to be a hell of a lot younger than I am now. Lot of good points in your video! Thanks!

      mike savage Thanks. I may try that. Usually my dogs come back just fine, but my one dog Louie is pretty stubborn when he is on a rabbit even on a check. It would be great if he were trained that way. By the way thanks for the great comments. I really appreciate it. Keep them coming!

    • @3beagles1
      @3beagles1 Před 9 lety +1

      BeagleBoys RabbitHunting I don't know how the whistle would work on an older dog. I get mine used to the whistle when they are about 8 or 9 weeks old. I don't have a problem picking up my dogs but I have been with other guys dogs who just about had to be tackled to get them. That makes for a frustrating hunt when you are ready to go home, but the dog isn't. Of course, back then there was no such thing as a garmin astro. That little invention REALLY makes life easier. You will appreciate that even more in your older years!

    I rabbit hunted for 20 years and owned many beagles, To be honest their is little to no need to do any of these techniques to train a dog. Take it in the woods at 3 months old, Sit on a log and let him walk around, He will do what he does and train himself, The best trainer is TIME! We have never ever done any of this and we had the best dogs in the province of NL.

    Stop getting mad some people like to hunt for animals and plus some people eat it and rabbits in the wild can kill other rabbits so it doesn't even matter if the dogs kill them because rabbits can breed a lot so they are basically controlling the amount
    of rabbits

Living in a rental room in Grant County Wisconsin.....was a teacher then in the local Catholic School....they would show up and invite me to the hunt!! So we had Beagle Poocher....olde timer with his nose to0 the ground!! Then we had Shoorty, Beagle-Ttreeing Walker Cross who would take off line of sight!! They would bring the rabbit around in circle as is their behavior!! My .22 LR would have them dead to rights!! When I get beyond. need to meet once again with those dogs in the hunting g room!!

Deer will always bust out of cover when dogs go through. It's all about keeping them focused on Rabbits! Training Training running the dogs on Rabbits nothing else. My dogs wanted nothing but to hunt rabbits training them only to want to hunt and chase Rabbits.

    Great dog, so cute. I have a appx 2 year old Beagle male who we got from the Denver shelter where they told us he was a stray. He is energetic and very loved but when we walk he is absolutely tracking, and sounding with his nose down. He moves from side to side and he points. He is so beautiful and we live in an apartment, it is a large place but he has no place to sniff to his heart's content,. We feel like he is not living out his purpose in life and we may keeping him selfishly. He loves us and we adore him. What can you or anyone tell me about this dilemma ?

      It is a GPS tracker. Some beagle runners use GPS and corrective collars. The GPS is great when you have a large amount of land to hunt on so you can better plan where your hunting buddies should be placed when the dogs get on a rabbit.

      Not so much for rabbits. You want something that is going to use its nose more than its eyes when you’re trying to find the rabbits, and then it has to be willing to really give chase once it finds them. The vast majority of people who hunt with pits, go after hogs.

People have to have a need for guns (ie. hunting) and a license. So guns are not illegal, you can still hunt, and there has been a marked improvement in the rates of gun violence, suicides, etc.. Do you think it would be possible to train a 2 year old dog to retrieve/hunt rabbits

      I think so. We trained our dog Willie at 2 years old. I think if you do some of these techniques he may eventually run rabbits.

    Can I train a Yorkie mut like this? They were bred to hunt rats, foxes, and such.

      I'm going to put him on a trail and see if he can even pick up the scent. I'll report back with what I find out.

      Your instructions worked perfectly. Every time I take my two terrier mutts on a walk they smell the air for the scent of rabbits. They poke their heads in every bush looking for them and if there is one around they find it. They have yet to catch one thought because it's hard to do off leash hunting in my community. but they nearly made a kill many times.

    Hola Jesse, tengo un beagle de ocho meses de edad, no he podido que siga el rastro del conejo, porque es muy distraído, en tu experiencia y profesionalismo podrías darme más consejos.

    • @BeagleBoysRabbitHunting
      @BeagleBoysRabbitHunting  Před 9 lety

      Ya, no problem. If this is one of the first times you put your dog on rabbits, don't worry about your dog losing the trail. What I would do is get your dog interested in the rabbit smell by playing with a piece of rabbit skin or a rabbits foot. Then after a few weeks of that, place your dog on a fresh rabbit's track and just see if your dog gets excited when they smell it. Then keep doing this and eventually they will follow the track. Just keep practicing.
