Stan I'm so glad to see you holding the torch for absoutely cranked snares. They sound soooo much better than the boring/sampled cardboard sounding modern snares in heavy music. I have no idea why people stopped playing the OCDP snares of the 90s. They were godlike. John Otto in 1998 = god's snaredrum
I actually tune the exact same way as you, except i also tune the snare wires super tight to minimise rhe snare rattle sound and so the toms dont make it buzz. And i tune opposite sides rather than around. You are spot on about the bottom head. I used to overlook it until a professional drummer once watched me at a gig once and told me i need to crank my bottom head to get the sound im going for. Everything changed after that day.
Since 2009 ive been playing a Mapex Black Panther 12x7 popcorn snare as my main (and only snare), and it has a similar tone, and I absolutely love it. People always comment on it at gigs.

This is so great to watch. Purely due to the satisfaction of the One who Hit's the thing!.. As long as That makes you happy,.. Aces!! This is a brand new take for me so paused half way through to comment. ;) ..eagerly awaiting results. I recently got my first ever 6.5 x 14 (73 Slingerland Sound King, restored completely by my which was grueling but highly rewarding :) ..so loving all the tones coming from deep but not too deep snare drums. In my opinion, that "table top tight" snare side is the key. You can tune the batter to your preference. But that tight reso is where all the snare responsiveness is.

Great Video! Just as a tip: In a lesson with the great Dave Weckl I learned that you should never use a drum key to check the tuning of individual lug points. Because the metal of the key will dent the drum heads and could also damage the bearing edges of the drums. So always tap the lug points with the fingers or a stick.
Matthias Knorr thanks. I appreciate the comment. I remember Weckl saying that, Ive just never agreed with it. That’s simply a user error. Honestly, who is actually hitting their bearing edges with the key? You tap about 1-1.5cm in from the bearing edge. Use caution, be mindful, and you should be fine.
@@stanbicknell I don't hit the bearing edges myself either. But it will, dent the drumheads (especially the thin snare reso). Even if you tap it very lightly. I know that from my own experience. So that is why I mainly use my fingers.
Matthias Knorr once again, that’s a user error. I’ve never put a dent in my head by tapping it with a key. I just don’t hit it that hard.

Choked. I've done tons of tests recording and that bottom head cranked like that never sounds as good. Might sound great live but recorded nope
This is not true at all
Yeah I guess it's just a matter of opinion right. I've found if a reso head is too tight it will cut through the mix but it won't sound as full and big. I think the biggest reason is the shell doesn't resonate as much when the reso head is tabletop tight. Don't get me wrong I love the pop I get when it's super tight
