Yuasa is criminally underrated. He creates work that is constantly on par with Studio Ghibli and other super popular studios but receives such little credit. Never the less I'm a die hard fan and ya boi is patiently waiting for another masterpiece.
Not to diminish his work, cause it looks great, but your comparison between him and the practices of the rest of the industry aren't quite accurate. His visual style is more distinct and bold than most other anime, but it isn't because he disregards their philosophies of cutting costs, rather he amplifies them. The simple line work and bold colours cut out a massive chunk of the illustrative, lighting, and compositing processes. This results in him having more time to make elaborate animations but the bulk of his strategy is still clearly focused on simplifying building in stylistic efficiencies.
Yeah, it's not that he enforces more work and detail; he just puts that effort into the animation and creativity itself, rather than on making screenshot-qualified frames every time. And to a lot of people, myself included, the creativity and fluidity is far more important, so we really enjoy this kind of animation.
I've tried to introduce a few people to "The Night is Short, Walk on Girl" but they've found it very difficult , and they are people who have watched a wide range of anime. I think with Yuasa's style, particularly in that one, you have to let yourself over to it and flow.

If anyone is primed to claim the Miyazaki throne, I think it’s Yuasa. He may be too weird for that but that just makes him all the more special in my opinion.
I think you're right, he's too (wonderfully) weird to appeal to the mainstream like Miyazaki has. Someone like Hosada or Shinkai will probably take that mantle.

I had the chance to see The Night is Short, Walk on Girl in theaters tonight and I had a blast. It is was my first view on Masaaki Yuasa. It's a fast paced film with storytelling that seems to fit Yuasa's animation style and feels like a dream. At first it was too much with the fast/loud-ish way the character's spoke, themes after themes in short intervals throughout the movie, and the bright/fluid visuals made it seem like it was hard to keep up with the story, plus the cultural symbols. I think after a couple more views with a pause button I will definitely grow an appreciation for the movie, but overall i enjoyed Yuasa's work. Will definitely watch Tatami Galaxy as I heard that it serves to see it to understand The Night it Short, Walk on Girl like a prequel from what I read in an interview with the director it's a trilogy. Don't disregard though that The Night is Short... can be enjoyed as a stand alone. Thank you for this awesome video about Yuasa. I really enjoy your reviewing style.

I'm in love with Lu Over the Wall and the fluidity of Yuasa's animation. the movement and flow are really gorgeous, makes the characters more alive. now I need to find all the other movies. :)

What you described sums him up perfectly, the first time i saw yuasa's work was the movie mind games. And i was like "wtf was that?" but I rewatched the whole movie just two days later. It was such a unique animation and since then i've been hooked to anything he's done.
Really good video. For the last decade, I've felt like anime has stagnated really hard, studios mostly producing garbage to pander to their audiences and make a quick buck. Masaaki Yuasa really brought that love for the medium back with his absolutely stunning imagery and story telling.
It's fantastic to finally see Yuasa break into mainstream; I've been a fan of his work for years and this video is an excellent rundown on why you should give his work a shot. Best part is it's easier than ever, and I hope the success of DMCB means we'll be seeing more Yuasa work on a wider scale in the future. Even beyond DMCB introducing more people to Yuasa's work, it's also a monumental moment in anime, and may have opened the door to the new generation of OVAs, only with wider availability than ever before.
This sounds like the story of the artist that went unnoticed by the masses but greatly influenced the next generation of artists. I won't be surprised in 20 years when everybody involved in anime sites him as an influence.

Just finished Crybaby, I've tickets preordered for the limited U.S. Night is Short theatrical showtimes next week, and am working through Tatami Galaxy at the moment. Really been an experience. I watched the night is short walk on girl and its been my favorite movie since, aswell as many other works of yuasa. This video is really well done, it convinced my father and sister to watch some of his works!
Just saw the night is short, walk on girl in the theater, they brought it here to Monterrey for the Japanese film festival, it was my favorite experiences going to the movies. I enjoyed even more than the first time I saw it (holed up in my room). It's a beautiful expression of how our idiosyncrasies can get the better of us. It's such a frantic, abstract, energetic and beautiful experience. I thank you for turning people on to yuasa's works, there has yet to be a series that has the same wonderful feel as The Tatami Galaxy.
I was recommended Cat Soup over a decade ago, and found it intriguing enough to look for Kemonozume. I think he may be the only anime director I ever followed so thoroughly. I still think Kaiba is a high point for me (I love the narrative approach of touring the ideas of the show's universe like that), but I think Kemonozume and Devilman are similarly great. He often seems to take risks that prevent the overall works to achieve a natural balance or perfection, but it's that sense of adventure and experimentation that I generally value much more highly than the sterility of a perfected masterpiece.
A true inspiration that sparks my love for animation that is represented with free spirited energy that is not restricted by limitation; but to continue and break the barrier of what animation can be presented as a medium itself. Thank you Masaaki Yuasa!

The Tatami Galaxy and Ping Pong the Animation are probably the best two anime TV series I have ever seen, and it's crazy to think that such different stories could be told by the same person.

Just like Yuasa, this video and channel are madly underrated. Looked this up right after I watched Mind Game! It's crazy the influence Yuasa has had on me without even knowing, he had made my favorite Space Dandy episode 4 years before I ever heard his name! So much love.
Thanks for the video. Yuasa has become an auteur in a genre that is similar to mainstream Hollywood movies. I'm just glad that he's managed to make what he has. He's similar to David Lynch in that his vision has always managed to get on screen, regardless of the fact that it's not always commercial.
It's bizarre that a lot of the animes I end up liking (which is usually rare) has been touched by him. I guess I just like that gauncy non traditional anime style
i thought the best feeling i had was when i watched his work for the first time, but rewatching it all again and again was way better, i dont know why, but every time i rewatched one of his movies, it could only get better, and better

I think Yuasa is amazing. I've seen a few stuff of his stuff without realizing who he was, until I saw Devil man cry baby. That was amazing. Watching the entire thing was such a thrill and a rush. I don't think I've felt such emotions while watching an anime. It provoked the same feelings as psychedelics would. I absolutely love it.

Man, that Kaiba music... thank you for this video. I'm a big fan of Yuasa. I caught the new Devilman a few weeks ago, and despite having them on my radar for months, I still haven't gotten around to seeing LOTW or TNIS,WOG yet. I'm going to fix that soon, and seeing these snippets and hearing your thoughts on them is extra motivation. You are absolutely right that he is pushing the boundaries of anime and I'm glad to hear that he isn't moving too far away from that edge while pursuing commercial success. To anyone who gets turned off by his visuals - I think it's a deliberate bit of a deception. Once you get over the confusion of it looking simple/different from what you're used to, you realize that there is tremendous depth in his stories *and he uses that style to bring it out*. It's a bit jarring to see a sequence done by him in someone else's show, (e.g. The Hakkenden) but if you're familiar with him, it becomes a bit of an easter egg. One suggestion for you, Joe - your start seemed unusually muddled, like you had two intros. By the time the title card came around, I thought you were skipping it. Still, I think this is a nice introduction to share with those unfamiliar with/intimidated by his previous work. Cheers and keep at it!
Good spot with the two intros thing! Funnily enough after the original opening I had a bit with the Beyond Ghibli title card but it didn't feel right, as immediately after it displayed I continued to 'introduce' Yuasa... As such it only felt like it fit near the end of that opening bit, some five minutes in! The alternative was to cut the opening with 'the Year of Yuasa' title card but after I'd put all the effort in I couldn't bear to lose it. In the end I went with style over straightforwardness.... It just felt right in a video about Yuasa :P I hope you can appreciate that equally muddled explanation. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to form such a great comment! The anime industry would make more money if they put their titles into websites that could stream them. A little bit more of a free hand in dubbing them would help, too, since the storyline seems to fall short more often than not.
All round a great video, no criticisms. Keep it up Joe, the 3 week gap shows a really big jump in your efficiency to make these videos. I think the next step is to turn a 3 week video into a 2 week video, somehow without sacrificing quality.

I usually leave it a week before I even start work on the next project because I'm so drained by the final editing stint for my previous upload (this is usually a mad 12 - 18 hour slog I undertake when the finish line is in sight). If I can negate that then I'll be sorted for your schedule :D On a side note, however, my next project is a pretty large one so... make of that what you will :P

However I do understand, as someone who draws, that when you see the end in sight you don't want to leave it for the next day because of the fear that I'd lose my ideas and focus. Also the longer and bigger the project the better! :D I don't mind the wait, but others possibly could, and it's difficult to grow a CZcams channel that way. Not impossible though, and I'm sure your channel will blow up regardless. Also in the (butchered) words of the CDProjektRed CEO, 'there's no better marketing than a [viewer] reccomending a product to someone else.' Self-advertising usually has the opposite of the intended effect, and so genuine word of mouth will benefit you in the long run. It's only a matter of time until you get a shout out from a major channel!
Wherever this all eventually takes me, I want something I can look back on and feel proud of - which is why I'd hate to rush anything (and why I didn't hesitate to re-upload - I might have lost the views but the video will be better for it in the long run). But I know what you mean, having regular uploads is something viewers want - which is likely why I have so many un-subscribers after a drought of content. It's a balance I'm still struggling with, but I take strength in having some really ace regulars in the comments sections ;)
videojoe 3 thing: 1) I feel that you can already be proud of what you've accomplished so far, not everyone can make consistently great content from the get-go 2)I think that the mentality that allows you to do things like reupload is really beneficial, but perhaps next time just private the original video instead (I think the channel view count remains and you also have the ability to look back at the comments - unsure though) 3)I don't think that viewers necessarily 'want' regular uploads as much as they are accustomed to regular uploads as well as the YT algorithm preferring it (which is why it's usually the way to go). There are multiple channels though, that ignore this path (Joseph Anderson and JonTron are possibly the clearest examples of a "loyal" audience willing to wait. Also thanks for that sentence, it didn't go unnoticed ;D
MindGame is one of my favorite movies. And I just fall on DevilMan Crybaby these very last days. I did'nt know it was from the same creator but the psychedelics scenes with the desperate hero made me think a lot of MindGame... And here, with your video, I discover they're from the same creator. Just like Yuasa, this video and channel are madly underrated. Looked this up right after I watched Mind Game! It's crazy the influence Yuasa has had on me without even knowing, he had made my favorite Space Dandy episode 4 years before I ever heard his name! So much love.
Thanks for the video. Yuasa has become an auteur in a genre that is similar to mainstream Hollywood movies. I'm just glad that he's managed to make what he has. He's similar to David Lynch in that his vision has always managed to get on screen, regardless of the fact that it's not always commercial.

Tatami Galaxy is *seriously* overlooked, it gave me one of the most satisfying feelings when I finished it, like I understood the secret to life
It's bizarre that a lot of the animes I end up liking (which is usually rare) has been touched by him. I guess I just like that gauncy non traditional anime style

i thought the best feeling i had was when i watched his work for the first time, but rewatching it all again and again was way better, i dont know why, but every time i rewatched one of his movies, it could only get better, and better
Great review - it's great media journalism too. I'm a big fan of Yuasa since I saw his work as a hired gun on various projects but Tatami Galaxy really blew me away. Keep up the good work!
Yuasa is the best, he really developed all the characters of the show within 10-12 episodes. And the art work is ♥️♥️♥️♥️
I've just found your channel and I just wanted to comment to say keep up the amazing work :) This is probably the best, most thorough, treatment of Yuasa's works on CZcams, in lieu of it's down to earth focus, it's articulate scripting, and it's goal of promoting the reception of his works.
I really hope you stick with this, because if you do your channel will deservedly grow, and we will all be the better for it.

Ping Pong is my favorite anime ever and im glad to have been introduced to his work from that.
I think Yuasa is amazing. I've seen a few stuff of his stuff without realizing who he was, until I saw Devil man cry baby. That was amazing. Watching the entire thing was such a thrill and a rush. I don't think I've felt such emotions while watching an anime. It provoked the same feelings as psychedelics would. I absolutely love it.

He’s legendary imo. The first anime I’ve seen of him was mind game, I guess it was my first anime ever lol in 10th grade or something. I loved it so so much. And after like 4 years now I’ve seen Tatami Galaxy and now I’m in love. I’ll watch every single one of them

Man, that Kaiba music... thank you for this video. I'm a big fan of Yuasa. I caught the new Devilman a few weeks ago, and despite having them on my radar for months, I still haven't gotten around to seeing LOTW or TNIS,WOG yet. I'm going to fix that soon, and seeing these snippets and hearing your thoughts on them is extra motivation. You are absolutely right that he is pushing the boundaries of anime and I'm glad to hear that he isn't moving too far away from that edge while pursuing commercial success.
To anyone who gets turned off by his visuals - I think it's a deliberate bit of a deception. Once you get over the confusion of it looking simple/different from what you're used to, you realize that there is tremendous depth in his stories *and he uses that style to bring it out*. It's a bit jarring to see a sequence done by him in someone else's show, (e.g. The Hakkenden) but if you're familiar with him, it becomes a bit of an easter egg.
One suggestion for you, Joe - your start seemed unusually muddled, like you had two intros. By the time the title card came around, I thought you were skipping it. Still, I think this is a nice introduction to share with those unfamiliar with/intimidated by his previous work. Cheers and keep at it!
Good spot with the two intros thing! Funnily enough after the original opening I had a bit with the Beyond Ghibli title card but it didn't feel right, as immediately after it displayed I continued to 'introduce' Yuasa... As such it only felt like it fit near the end of that opening bit, some five minutes in! The alternative was to cut the opening with 'the Year of Yuasa' title card but after I'd put all the effort in I couldn't bear to lose it. In the end I went with style over straightforwardness.... It just felt right in a video about Yuasa :P

The anime industry would make more money if they put their titles into websites that could stream them. A little bit more of a free hand in dubbing them would help, too, since the storyline seems to fall short more often than not.

All round a great video, no criticisms. Keep it up Joe, the 3 week gap shows a really big jump in your efficiency to make these videos. I think the next step is to turn a 3 week video into a 2 week video, somehow without sacrificing quality.

I usually leave it a week before I even start work on the next project because I'm so drained by the final editing stint for my previous upload (this is usually a mad 12 - 18 hour slog I undertake when the finish line is in sight). If I can negate that then I'll be sorted for your schedule :D
On a side note, however, my next project is a pretty large one so... make of that what you will :P

However I do understand, as someone who draws, that when you see the end in sight you don't want to leave it for the next day because of the fear that I'd lose my ideas and focus.
Also the longer and bigger the project the better! :D I don't mind the wait, but others possibly could, and it's difficult to grow a CZcams channel that way. Not impossible though, and I'm sure your channel will blow up regardless.
Also in the (butchered) words of the CDProjektRed CEO, 'there's no better marketing than a [viewer] reccomending a product to someone else.' Self-advertising usually has the opposite of the intended effect, and so genuine word of mouth will benefit you in the long run. It's only a matter of time until you get a shout out from a major channel!
Wherever this all eventually takes me, I want something I can look back on and feel proud of - which is why I'd hate to rush anything (and why I didn't hesitate to re-upload - I might have lost the views but the video will be better for it in the long run). But I know what you mean, having regular uploads is something viewers want - which is likely why I have so many un-subscribers after a drought of content. It's a balance I'm still struggling with, but I take strength in having some really ace regulars in the comments sections ;)

1) I feel that you can already be proud of what you've accomplished so far, not everyone can make consistently great content from the get-go
2)I think that the mentality that allows you to do things like reupload is really beneficial, but perhaps next time just private the original video instead (I think the channel view count remains and you also have the ability to look back at the comments - unsure though)
3)I don't think that viewers necessarily 'want' regular uploads as much as they are accustomed to regular uploads as well as the YT algorithm preferring it (which is why it's usually the way to go). There are multiple channels though, that ignore this path (Joseph Anderson and JonTron are possibly the clearest examples of a "loyal" audience willing to wait.
