Meant to say I diagnosed the other day. System is five years old
Age doesn't matter should have acid test.
Somebody may have already mentioned it but the stubs on the compressor are copper plated steel wear through the copper plating and you’ll never solder it with 15%
@lonniebearden9907 yes get to hot your screwed.
You did great, stay strong as always
Dont forget the decades for experience leading up to this point
and that boys and girls is why an apprentice is useful
I always cut out my compressors and add a short piece of tubing when reinstalling
Tech tip 5:34 never unsweat I always cut it. Always enough copper. Nice 👍🏼 job and no phazengas
i’m pretty sure that discharge and suction joint on that compressor is copper plated steel curt.
Tech tip plumbing strap for capacitors is outstanding.
Do you not do a acid test on compressors? If there's a it requires flushing the lines first then filters. The last time I heard. Appreciate your go get er done.
Cutting line lines as close to the compressor coupling and than installing the new compressor is what I do. There is enough copper that you can manipulate it to fit into the compressor. Saves time on cool down. OH and when a compressor comes like yours did -SWEDGE will work
ALWAYS open the box at the wholesaler and check for damage AND voltage and phase!
Did a 5 hp years ago, on a roof. Welded it all in, wired it up and nothing.
Found it to be 3 phase and I needed single.
The receipt said single but they gave me a three!
I was FURIOUS
Sorry they said!!
I had a compressor come with bent end copper. I used a spin swage for the drill to fix it and it worked. Just for next time Curtis. Great video
Have to be careful, it's copper plated. I made a huge mistake overheating the piece once.
If you look at the original compressor you can tell it was running hot. Scrolls are junk in comparison to reciprocatings. Give you props for keeping your cool--I'd be holding myself back from cursing like a sailor... quality control and careless shipping is out of control. Good changeout.
If a system has an accumulator, it's a good idea to pour the oil out of the compressor and measure it to see if the oil is trapped in the accumulator. That causes a bunch of compressors to fail premature. I don't fool with "de soldering" I cut them. The Accumulator oil return port can become clogged up when HVAC techs don't use nitrogen when brazing causing soot in the lines. I couldn't tell if this had an Accumulator
I believe the bad weather puts a lot of pressure on you and when that happens everything goes DOWNHILL.GREAT VIDEOS 😊
Anyone who does hvac r
Nothing like having issues and having to hurry, superb job and finish!!
When it rains it pours but you endured 😊. Hard enough dealing with the rain when things go right downright miserable when they don’t Glad you got it done without any lightning. Looks like this monsoonal pattern is gonna hang around in some form till close to the end of the month. I’m ready for the sunshine 🌞
I was half waiting for him to end up driving that very last screw right through the coil 🤣
Wow! Still wish you served the Atanta, GA area! Your honesty should so be rewarded!
I've use a strong bungee cord with the metal hook over the fitting and the other end stretched out to the terminal cabinet with as much tension as I can get. Heat the joint up and the fittings ( suction and liquid) pop apart almost like magic. I also use a 36 inch or so extension to remove the compressor bolts once the fitting are open. And I use my Little Giant ladder as an A Frame over the compressor to remove it by a rope/pulley deer hanging device from Harbor Freight that I paid $15 for. Getting the compressor out and the new one back in place is very easy and getting it precisely into position is also very easy.
Either you know about cars or you should but when you have automotive knowledge hvac is such ease
@@DJV94022 I've been buying and selling cars since I was 16. I also owned a chemical stripping shop for restoration. And I've owned street rods and classics with my first being a 1939 Ford with a 331CI Cadillac engine that could outrun most cars up until about 55 MPH because I just plain ran out of gears at that speed.
When I went through HVAC school 40 years ago, we were taught to always fulx the joints before joining and brazing them.
Boy Curt I was getting frustrated for you just watching great job maintaining your calm and professionalism
100%
Great job Curtis. That one was a bear and a half.
I had the exact same job just last week minus the damaged compressor. Gas nearly killed me! I burned a very small hole in the suction pipe while heating. Thankfully it was small and very close to the bell of the compressor and it sealed up nicely. I had to swage the end of the pipe to make it fit again. I finally gave up on the suction line and cut it. This system failed at about 7 years. The line set is nearly 100' long with a 15' rise. Piping is ⅜ and ⅞. I think it's starving on the low side due to that long run. Thankfully there was no acid in the system. Very nicely done Curtis! It makes me feel good knowing that I'm not the only one who has jobs that go sideways now and then.
what gas?
Gas from heating the piping. The usual stuff. Burns throat and eyes something awful.
The last screw for the small capacitor reminded me of that old song "four or five times" lol.
You earn every penny on this one mate, i thought your jeans were gonna set alite at one stage LOL
Great job mate.
Thanks 👍
It looks like somebody dropped that replacement compressor box!
A rosebud tip helps greatly with these compressor changeouts…you can heat it up quickly then get off of it….as far as the damage on the compressor you could have taken a swedge and rounded it right back to size….commented before finishing the video…
When I saw you squat down inside that unit with a torch in your hand, I thought "That boy is about to lose everything he is famous for."
Nah auntie, he just short. Us short guys can squat down in a condensing unit no problem
That was rough brother! I was with you the whole way! Good job. I’ve had those days!
Some Days you Feel like Someone wants to Make Sure you Earn your Pay for that Job. 😬👍
Curtis ever since I learned the flux trick from NorCal Dave i swear by it. Put a little flux on those joints to unsweat and the pipe comes out smooth like butter‼️🎯
What is the flux trick?
@paxtonquigley1725 Applying flux to joint when sweating out compressor. Gets joint hotter faster and makes for a smooth disconnect‼️
@@joemcfarland3491 thanks
Should the TXV bulb on the condensor for a heat pump be wrapped? I had the TXV replaced and the tech didn't put wrap around the bulb. I didn't see if it was originally on the factory one. It's a Lennox and maybe Lennox doesn't come from the factory like that. I haven't found a definitive answer on that.
It will be nice if they make compression fittings for suction dryers! Will probably need longer stub outs at the dryers!
You did great, stay strong as always😊🎉
First time I've seen a suction filter before, and Damn you getting in side of the unit like that
Same.
You're supposed to install one after a compressor burnout
@CarlosCandamil-et8jd like I said, I've never seen one before
Wow, tough day. I saw the compressor box in your van the other day and knew we'd be seeing this change soon, but not that it would be this difficult. You need a young guy helping schlep those compressors. You wouldn't ask him to take a blower wheel off, but bring Jake to help with the heavy lifting. Would supporting a self-tapping screw by starting it through a 1/8" or 3/16” wrench help?
You've commented before about your magnets getting weak; could be from impacts, so it might be time for new ones. You can grab a new mirror at the same time.
Can you open compressors when you pick them up to check for damage?
That was INSANE. What a great job you did! Keep the GREAT ones coming! Much Appreciated!
Thanks
It fought you a bit, but it turned out fine. Good job
Funny I just had compressor change out today but it rained cats and dogs
Nice save on the comp fitting. Now you'll be opening boxes at supply house for a while. We've all been burned by damaged/ defective parts.
That's a helluva position you got into to solder the comp. The struggle is real. That's why tradesmen charge what they do.
And just throw in the rain for fun. I hope that customer appreciates you.
Well done Curtis, not many people could fit in that unit!
Another reason for HVAC folks to stay trim and fit!
All I can say is that sometimes you're the bug, and sometimes you're the windshield
It's a normal pump swap. I once seen a guy pipe stubs out of a compressor and the lines and braze them together above the compressor 😂and didn't realize until I got there just in time for lunch and asked how he plans to cool the condenser since the fan can't turn. He started bending the pipe down and kinked the suction. I said ok let's fix this after lunch. I taught him the normal way and he was good after until the next time I got called to bail him again and 1 pack of braze is gone trying to put 5% braze on steel to copper. Again we fixed it after lunch.
Great job Curtis in difficult conditions thanks for the video
I’m happy to see a guy really get into his work Curtis , but that seems a little dangerous. If you get an oil blow back fire you have no where to go. I heard your coughing as well which means you’re too close to the vapour. What I did notice was that is a heat pump by the looks of the inside of that unit. I noticed your liquid line drier only has an arrow pointing toward the indoor coil. I hope I’m wrong.👍👍🇨🇦
I have to return to take out the suction filter. I’ll replace it then.
@@HVACGUY my apologies Curtis I had posted that before the end of your video and you explained it. I jumped the gun brother, should have known better. 👍🇨🇦
I always have my. Swagger on a change out
Curtiss,nice job bud.
Here's a tech tip from welding instructor....
When brazing you should BARELY HEAR the oxygen at the tip.
Try lowering the o2 regulator.
U still like the MR45 recovery machine??
Good job, this is the first time I ever seen anyone post the true issues that we run into. Everyone else makes it look like no mistakes or bad things happen. Job well done.
Nice job. I haven't done a compressor change out in like 15 years.
As Larry the Cable Says it Best, “Git Err Dun”. 😬👍
When I run into that I open it up like you did I have a yellow jacket switching tool are any type of sweating tool may work tomorrow older style
Never seen anyone inside a condenser unit... And then have to work on the new compressor.
Kind of reminded me of crawling into the engine compartment of my old chevy truck to make carburetor repairs when i was 20 years old.
I worked inside a wall once.😂😂😂
The beer bellies normally won't fit.
ive try not to get that close to the flame, especially with oil vapor that always flashes out when unbrazing like that, i treat my heat with the same respect as high voltage
@@Paul-IE-Repairs That's a good rule Paul.
Well done Curtis, you managed that job nicely 👍 Au
Nice work! That suction line filter was a BEEEOTCH!
I’d love to see you try stay bright one time on an install like this . Man it would be easier. No need for nitrogen. Get in get out .
I don't understand why you don't use Turbo torch with a B tank..Its all I ever used on 1" and below copper...Makes life much less stressful.
You probably got the new compressor 5 other guys at the supplier opened it up and said no to.
Curtis may I suggest you get a younger helper to relieve the strain on your knees? The pain will catch up later and it's no fun!
Hey Curtis, great job!!!!!! I have been there and had days like that you got it right and a job well done
I hate days like that Curtis. I feel your pain, but you did it in the end.
I just bought the VPX7 10 CFM fieldpiece vacuum pump. I can’t wait to use it today.
You can apply a little heat and it will soften up.
You had me worried there for an instant. Thought you had started to smoke that good stuff 🤣🤣🤣 heard you coughing loud 🤣🤣🤣
I saw an ac guy and put up a tent and good thing he did, it was a gully washer!
Well,i didn't think that a person could fit inside of that
I might be able to stand but at 6'4" big boned 235Lbs. no way. 40 years ago I was skinny as as Curtis..
Neither did the tree frog..
Great Job and fine brazing! We are getting your rain from a couple of days ago here in the West Knoxville area, green tree frog 🐸 weather. I'm looking forward to seeing the next one 😀 👍
I see you using your mirror and want to start a go fund me page for you to get a new one 😅
Luckily your pants didn’t catch fire. So not everything went wrong. Haha. Sometimes it feels like you have to change out a compressor in a mailbox and still be able to sit next to it. Luckily you managed to make it happen.
That's a little scary. I've seen a fiery oil splash come out when that line separates.
@@Bryan-Hensley you want that on you!
good work curtis
You did a great job.
Curtis, invest in the Hilmar hydraulic swage kit, well worth the money!
I would've used the swagger tool.
Curtis, you installed a suction filter/dryer and a liquid line filter/dryer because you suspect this was a burn-out? Can't you do an acid test to confirm? I guess installing the two filter/dryers, then returning in a month to take out the suction and replace the liquid line one would be good cheap "insurance"... 5 years on a Copeland Scroll is awfully quick, I wonder what shortened it's life.
Curtis, your swaging tool to the rescue! Good thinking. It seems very heavy because you have very little leverage. You deserve a hot shower and later a cold plunge!
I jumped the gun LOL!!
Try your swedge tool curtis good video
I know the video is an hour long. How long did it actually take you to complete such a job? Thank you for the videos sir. Your videos are one of my favorites to watch. Thanks again.
Good job Curtis, You need a little pocket mirror for those hard to see spots, and some company out there should invest into a cordless or battery powered recovery machine, otherwise your depend on cheater cords or a generator or a power bank, or solar generator, new electric codes on new homes or buildings are supposed have a receptacle in service areas, or equipment areas.......
An adjustable spanner turned around the outside can sometimes straighten it out
Fun fact: it’s not an 80% chance of rain, it’s actually 100% chance of rain but only 80% of your area will see the rain!
Yea, I always get confused by this, idk why
I think all hvac guys can agree no matter how long you’ve been in the trade… THAT PHOSGENE GAS IS NO JOKE !
What if you were to insert the needle nose pliers in the tude while squeezing the outside with the channel lock pliers
I’ve never seen a filter drier on a suction line, does having two filter drier cause a restriction ?
What gas mask were you using? Great videos buddy
What's your take on the soft starter
That’s why I keep plumbers tools with me for shit like that compressor but that’s the worst way to do it. Feel for you on that because you probably didn’t want to leave the customer without AC.
time to buy a sizing tool
Ahhh the good Old Phosgene gas. It will def make you clear out! 🤣
I would've documented the damage and let parts store know.
I would have taken it back you can’t see inside if anything came loose then when it fails how can you prove it ! plus the vendor can look at the video and say that you should have brought it back to us then your on the hook for everything again
what is the round blue piece to put on the copper pipes outside the unit ?? did i hear you say it is a dryer ?
Just curious if not swapping out the filter drier was a good idea?
Wish you had that impact swage tool haha!!
You need to get a 10 x 10 pop up tent for jobs like this. You can get one for $50
Maybe using a swage kit would help a bit easier. Sorry you had this shit given to you
WHAT BAG ARE YOU USING FOR YOUR OXY ACETYLENE TANKS ?! That’s an awesome setup
Boa Noite observei foi colocado 2 filtros na linha? Um na sucção e um na linha líquido? Isso mesmo, pra que serve aquele azul? Tira esta minha dúvida!!!! Obrigado
Would have been just a few more bucks to replace it instead of just a compressor the whole unit
I hope you had a supply house close by for your nitrogen and acetylene lol
Great videos just wanted to say seems like you have too much oxygen and that makes it more difficult to heat the copper and more likely to burn a hole in your tubing set your source regulators at 5 for acetylene and 20 for oxygen light torch and get a feathered flame on the acetylene and then turn oxygen until you have a nice inner blue flame that heat the tubing and then move in p ast the joint with fla heating the tubing get the inside joint hot
Carry a handheld bathroom mirror.
How come you didn’t have a portable tent
yeah you got everything else ?
