Hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating in amounts greater than what is needed to regulate our body temperature. The causes of excessive sweating are often unknown. In most cases, hyperhidrosis occurs for no apparent reason and is called primary hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis usually affects only certain parts of the body, so it is also referred to as primary focal hyperhidrosis.
The areas that are most commonly affected by primary focal hyperhidrosis are excessive sweating in the palms of the hands, the axillae (armpits), and the feet. The condition often starts during childhood or adolescence. Patients may start noticing extremely sweaty palms or soles of the feet, regardless of the temperature.
Most patients notice the excessive sweating for the first time when their sweaty hands begin to interfere with school and social activities. Excessive sweating in the hands can severely affect the ability to write, hold papers, use touch-screens, and perform routine daily activities. Profuse sweating can also cause social embarrassment and impair the patient’s social interactions, which can lead to negative psychological and psychosocial consequences.
Hyperhidrosis can also occur as a result of several medical conditions, including hyperthyroidism and hypertension, in which case it is called secondary hyperhidrosis. Before starting any treatment for hyperhidrosis, all medical conditions that can lead to excessive sweating must be ruled out.
Hyperhidrosis can be treated non-surgically or with a surgical procedure. Non-surgical hyperhidrosis treatment typically involves care by a dermatologist and one of the following options: topical agents like antiperspirants; oral hyperhidrosis medication that blocks the innervation of the sweat glands; iontophoresis, a type of low-voltage electric therapy; or Botox injections, which work to decrease the amount of sweat by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands.
Hyperhidrosis surgery is called thoracoscopic sympathectomy. The operation is also known as endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy or minimally invasive thoracic sympathectomy. I was always told I would grow out of it and it’s underestimated how much hyper hydrosis affects my life. My parents don’t want me getting surgery because they don’t think it’s worth it but it really is a huge issue socially and physically

My hyperhidrosis is all over my body. Its caused me so much depression, anxiety and embarrassment that I had to drop out of high school after freshman year. Ive missed out on so much in life it feels like it will never go away. Im on medication but it only does so much. Ive spent hundreds of dollars on products to help, but nothing has. I would do anything to make it go away.

It sucks when hyperhidrosis and regular sweating happen at the same time, my hands is literally a watery bowl. Whenever my friends hold my hand playfully, I get nervous because my hands are always so wet and moist. One of my friends said my hands were all clammy and because of that, I’ve become self aware of my surroundings. I always try to avoid anything in contact with my hands, but if I could give advice, tell people you have hyperhidrosis. I’ve told my friends about it and they seem to be aware that I don’t want to make hand in hand contact. If you tell people, they become noticed and it wouldn’t be much of an embarrassment and issue. However, one thing I can’t help with is writing. During my tests, my pencil and hands become all wet and I used to take a 5 second break to simply rub off all that sweat on my pants (because like where else can I get it off) and it happens about 5 times during a basic test I have. I told my doctor about this but she said that there isn’t a cure and some of the treatments that’s supposedly supposed to decrease the amount of sweating arent as affective, so really, I’m left with nothing but just hope that my sweating will decrease in the future. I’m fine with regular sweating, but when it becomes excessive, I become self conscious, and uncomfortable .

I've had this as long as i can remember and im 31 now. I found out you could get surgery back when I was 16. but I never really have had health care. I contacted people about it. normal doctors have no idea about what to do or even that such a condition exist. you kind of have to speak with a specialist. and even they are clueless for the most part. they love to keep having you try 100 different treatments. But I know mine is so bad nothing topical will work. They really need some kind of financing available. Access to medical care has been a huge ongoing issue for me. Mind you I've always worked full time since I was 17yrs old. Hate having to choose medical care or rent and food.
I absolutely hate touching people, like high fives, simple hand shakes, even holding paper and drenching it. Piano was annoying with my sweat. Hyperhidrosis isn’t something you can’t understand unless you’ve had it or have it.

My friend kinda made fun of me for it, I accidentally touched her hand and she asked me why my hands were so sweaty and gave me a gross look...I can’t hold hands with my boyfriend cause I’m scared he will judge me and think it’s gross even though he says it’s ok and he won’t mind. I have to wear hoodies all the time or jackets in school or my papers will dissolve cause of how sweaty my hands are. I wear hoodies so I can cover my right hand enough so I can write without soaking the paper. I’m also an art kid meaning I draw a ton and I can’t feel normal drawing...I don’t tell anyone and my family thinks it’s funny but it’s ruining my entire life and I’m just so self conscious now... sometimes I’m lucky and I don’t sweat in school but that’s so rare cause my school has the heat on blast already(it feels like it) and it’s only October and 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit...fml

everytime during and after my last class for the day, even in a class that’s the coldest, I’m out here sweating, whenever it’s a good day where it doesn’t sweat even for a couple minutes, I get in a good mood till it starts happening again. I meet w/ people and they get out their hand to shake mine i get a mini anxiety attack, but don’t want to reject them cs it seems rude so I wipe down on my shirt though it’s not enough they go “ why are your hands wet” but I get so tired of hearing it I always reassure I say it myself that way I won’t have to hear it from others over and over
