    Was looking for Springer Spaniel videos as my old lady had to be put down today. Her name was Pippa, or Pip for short. This was like looking back on having her as a baby all over again. I hope your Pip is as lovely and loyal as ours was ❤️

    I'm a big fan of all animals especially dogs but Springer's own my heart we used to raise some Springer's and I miss my fur babies so much. Your videos are joy to watch because I love Springer's and because of the information you include. There is always something new to learn. I dearly hope to get another bench female liver and white Springer next year.Ultimately I'd love to get two so they would have each other for company when we are not around. I have 24 acres in New Hampshire in the USA so they'd have plenty of room to run around. If you know of any good breeders in my area I would love it if you send them my way. Thanks for posting and I especially loved seeing how your baby grew week-by-week

    • @mrheyes
      @mrheyes  Před 3 lety

      It took the cats about a year to get used to Pip, and vice versa, but now they get a long fine. So long as the cats have a 'safe area', the cats should be fine. For example, Pip isn't allowed upstairs, so the cats mostly stayed out of her way to begin with. I guess it depends on the dog...and on the cat(s) :)

      No, Pip didn't do that, but I know plenty of pups that have! :) So yes, it is normal. Not sure why they do it....possibly a bit of boredom, possibly entertaining themselves, possibly not tired, possibly not stimulated enough, possibly just being a puppy, possibly a combo of all the above. I wouldn't worry, as Springers usually grow out of puppy phases relatively quickly.

    We have adopted a springer and she is 1 1/2yrs old female. We are struggling to train her. She is very strong willed and yet so loving. She goes nuts when she see other dogs, cats, birds anything that moves it seems. We work with her daily. I am to the point of getting a shock collar and wanted your input.

    • @mrheyes
      @mrheyes  Před 6 lety

      Hi Robert, thanks for the comment. It's a tricky one to answer, but my summary would be do not get a shock collar.
      The issue with adoptions is that you don't have a complete view of the history of the Spaniel, but that's not to say they can't be changed or retrained. If she's loving towards you, then there's a lot of hope! When you say she goes nuts, do you mean aggressively with teeth bared, or simply chasing them and wanting to play? Hopefully the latter.
      The first thing I would do is some consistent training on the lead...with some will power, she should eventually come around. I would also get her used to a few doggies that she meets on a regular basis, so that she get can used to an environment with other animals.
      I would also do some training in the house (and garden if you have one), with treats. Going back to the basics of sit, stay, lie down and paw can work wonders, and reinforce you are the one in control, and get her to understand pack mentality again, with you at the top of the pile.
      It will probably take a lot of work....6 months, maybe more, so have patience, and good luck!

    • @robertmoors5850
      @robertmoors5850 Před 6 lety

      she knows her commands and just looses control. Her tail is wagging with the bad behavior. Chocker collar works to a point but when she wants to chase a bird while on a walk she just fights to go after it
      Barking at everything that goes down the street I will put her in her cage She will even go to her cage when I tell her after barking

    • @mrheyes
      @mrheyes  Před 6 lety

      Sounds like quite the power struggle! It seems like she's doing whatever she wants to do...not what you want her to do, so there needs to be a realignment of who's boss (pack mentality). Keep working on it, hopefully she'll come around eventually!

    • @suek7086
      @suek7086 Před 5 lety +1

      If you continue to struggle it is well worth contacting a well rated trainer. It can make quite a difference in whether you have a pet you can really enjoy or ones that runs the household. We did that with our Sprocker. We got him from a rescue and the only training he had was he was housebroken. There were some relapses for a while but not bad. Otherwise he was a heathen dog who had to be crated for us to be able to sit down for 15 minutes. The trainer worked with him, then with me and him, and sent us home with homework for the week. He was still a joyful dog but so, so, much easier to live with.

    • @mrheyes
      @mrheyes  Před 4 lety +1

      Good question. The first step would be to go back to basics. Change direction when walking on the lead so the dog knows you're in control. Walking different routes rather than the same route should help too. And stop still if he/she pulls and wait for them to come back to heel before setting off again. It might take a bit of time and patience, but hopefully it makes a difference!

    • @mrheyes
      @mrheyes  Před 6 lety

      Hello! I think it depends on two things: 1) pot luck and 2) the food you feed them :) So I've never trimmed Pip's coat and she's never been professionally groomed. I think she's had a bath twice in 16 months (thanks to fox poo!). Her coat is naturally short, but her siblings have longer, more curly hair, and have to be groomed every 3 months or so. But I'm convinced that the type of food they consume has a direct impact on their coat - Pip's is incredibly soft and glossy. Hope that helps!
