@1:40 That "wire" (more like fishing line) coming up from the steering column is *supposed* to be permanently attached to the instrument cluster, and the other end attaches to the steering column with a spring clip. The gear indicator is just a spring gauge that you access from the front side (remove the "lens" and the gauge bezel). This video shows a complete cluster tear-down, with the gear indicator exposed czcams.com/video/pAgZ8R_gE5c/video.html
For those servicing a truck with automatic transmission - remove the knee panel directly below the steering column (two obvious screws on the panel). With the transmission in Park , find the lower end of the steering column cover and run your fingers up the right side. At about 3 o'clock, you'll feel the clip securing the "wire". Push it down the column (towards the firewall), and it will pop off.

Currently doing work on this same panel. The cable you mentioned hanging loose behind the panel... I believe belongs to the Park, Reverse, Neutral, etc. indicator on the bottom left of the panel. I tried to remove the panel as you have described but the cable does not allow that to happen. I put it back together and hope to find information on how to disconnect the cable. I'm "old" and need brighter panel lights. Thanks for making the video Van. I tried to count the number of bulbs in the panel. I have 10 of the new style diode bulbs but I don't want to take it all apart and find out I needed more. If you happen to know/remember how many there are in the panel, I would appreciate if you would let me know. Great truck right!

Did the speedometer work after the repair? I have a 1990 GMC C1500 and the speedometer works sporatically, I too have to "Fonzie Smack" it and it will start working again foe awhile. Seems to be somthing loose in there not making contact correctly. Does cleaning the contacts get it working again? It's a pain because the cruise control only works when the speedometer does! I have a 89 chevy c1500 too and looking over other comments I believe I have just the same problems. The gauges don't light up at all so I can't see any at night; the gas, temp, and battery gauges don't work at all or partially (gas gauge fills up only to about quarter when it is completely filled, the other two are completely screwed up), and the passenger side front blinker light is not getting any voltage so my driver side tail light isn't working either. What would you suggest doing for these problems?

Update: I actually found my problem a couple of days ago. I always thought maybe the wire of the gauge motors are not making full contact to the motherboard of the cluster so I went down and checked on my fuses. The cluster fuse is located on the very top left corner of the fuse box i just replaced it and it works just fine all i need to do is reposition my needles to the correct gas, rpms and oil pressure. I hope anyone else who’s dealing with that problem hopefully my info helps
