    God bless you! I was doing exactly what you've shown in 3:15, but know I found the cure. The thing was, there weren't any tutorial that actually issued how to hit invidual notes with the thumb. They just said "hit like that on the E and A string". I was like "Ok, but how do I get nice even sound when hitting the G string?". Now I know, thanks to you Sir!
    Lot's of thanks Bass Wizard!

    I was a self taught bassist and used to use the thumb down technique. For most basic stuff including RHCP It was pretty fine till I tried a few riffs which had required the thumb on the D and G string.
    Every bass instructional talks about the rotational motion of the hand and all but this was the only video that actually talks about the thumb strike through the string technique. THank you.

  • @jaydy71
    @jaydy71 Před 7 lety +3

    I agree 100% about the thumb thing. You get a much fuller fatter sound when going 'through' the string, and you get much more precision.
    I think people play with the thumb down because either it's a bit more comfortable to them, or they just want to look badass with their bass hanging down their knees and all (and then you kinda don't have any other option than compromise your technique).
    There are of course great bass players who play with their thumb kind of bouncing on the strings, and everyone is of course free to ignore advice and do their own thing. But the way as is taught here is imho the most effective way to get a fat slap sound.

    I'm a guitarist and I just bought my first bass got a ibanez. I even know not to play with thumbs down lol. I can play a lot since I played guitar 17 years it's pretty amazing but I don't no technical things like slapping yet but I can play Metallica and Black Sabbath and alot of other things just from playing guitar. So I work on these.

    Marc, I've worked with the better bass players in my circuit and what you do and teach are what they do. All I can say is that if a player wants the clean effective sound, it is the technique that you teach here. But, also, yes, we thank you for opening eyes for everyone and leave the guessing that becomes a technique that later have to change towards what sounds and performs professionally and stands out to be good out there. For some others who follows you or have seen what other players do like you do, it's an aha moment to them.

    What a great video!
    Honestly if you can watch a video and just get ONE piece of the puzzle like what you share about thumb down attack on the high stings in this video then that is amazing.
    As a young man I wanted a LOT of technique and tricks.
    As a middle age player I'll take one great solid technique any day!
    This will make you sound good!
    It's like martial arts. G
    uys who know a ton of moves are not as dangerous a a guy who has practiced 3 or 4 moves 10,000 times on the mat.
    Because he is gonna get ya while the other guy is "trying" to pull stuff off he has dabbled in.

  • @ratking948

    Thank you! The first video that I have seen that differentiates the need to play the higher strings with a slightly different technique. I could get a great slap sound out of my lower strings but couldn’t for the life of me get a solid sound out of the top strings. I figured it out myself but this lesson will help a lot of very beginner plays get through that part.
    Question though for you, do you still try to “slap through” the lower strings too to keep it all consistent? Or do you just bounce off them when you play? Thank you! Look forward to your course.

    Well, I wouldn't say that the thumb down technique is bad, as long as you know this technique as well. Personally I use thumb down when I'm just on the e-string, then I change to this type of rest-slap when going on the other strings (and sometimes on the e-string as well). If you're going to learn one of the two though, it's the one you showed in the video. But knowing both can't hurt!

  • @AnthonyFerguson01
    @AnthonyFerguson01 Před 6 lety

    Hi great video! A few questions -- I like the idea of thumbing thru the strings on the G and D. It makes a difference. I notice that in the exercise lick at the end, that you aren't actually thumbing thru the stings, yet your still getting a full tone, with crisp attack. When I try that, I just get a harmonic with a weak root undertone. I'm noticing that you don't hit the strings very sharply (E and A included). I have to hit them a good bit harder to get a similar response, or again, I'm getting weak fundamentals and harmonics. Also, I'd love to know what your signal chain is here. Straight into a console preamp? Bass amp? Well done, love your channel!
