Just picked this beauty up reminiscing on DW2 days I wasn't disappointed with its progress, heard horrible things about 9 so thought I'd settle with this one.

It's just a shame some of my most wanted generic officers are playable in 9 :(

Seriously, not many people give the new DW games the proper critical eye, just because the games look similar.
He also said some things that were blatantly untrue. Like Ambition Mode never ends or that your ally officers actually do shit...Lu Bu will lose to a no name in 5 seconds.

It's fairly affordable these days, and I've been itching for an adventurous hack and slash... looks promising. It only costs half as much as Dragon Quest Heroes and I prefer the darker visuals.

There is no reason to pay full price for 95% of games. You just dont get bang for your buck (or how ever that saying goes). Goes double for current AAA games.
This game is 20€ without sale so its worth it.
After the complete disaster that was DW9, I'm tempted to buy 8 XL CE for PS4 to get my Dynasty Warriors fix

I'm confused about one major thing. There are a ton of characters, which I like, but when do I actually use them? You said that I pick a storyline and play through it with a specific character, which is fine, but when do I get to use all of the other characters? Is it only in other modes, or can I use any characters in the story once I complete it once or what exactly?
Hi, thanks for your comment, good question! So Dynasty Warriors 8 is a bit different to the other Dynasty Warriors games, for example in DW4 you'd pick Zhao Yun and play through his personal campaign, but in DW8 you pick a kingdom, for example Shu, and then play each mission with a selection of the warriors that relate to the battle. For example in The Yellow Turban Rebellion, you'd get the option to play as Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Liu Bei and then in Hu Lao Gate you'd get Guan Yu, Zhao Yun and Xing Cai, and then in Chi Bi, you'd get Zhuge Liang, Ma Chao etc. All of the characters level up at the same time and can share items, skills and weapons but Dynasty Warriors 8 gives you the chance to play through one, much longer story rather than doing the same battles over and over with a different character everytime. All of the characters in the version I looked at can be selected from the start in Free Mode, Challenge Mode and Cross Platform play. I hope this helps, it really confused me too when I first started playing, but you get the chance to mess around with new characters and play the story out in different ways without being locked to one character or ever being penalised.
Story mode revolves around the kingdom factions instead of individual officers.

Empires series is for niche audiences, its more on the strategic choices, with the actual hack n slash format put in less emphasis
It’s crap!
I miss DW 2 & 3 because they were so hard to play, every single soldier had strength, you had to fight them, it wasn’t like you run to 50 soldiers and press square and you kill them all, that was what I missed from older DWs.
In DW 2&3 you start so low in the campaign that you always looking to your body guards as your best mates.
I remember playing DW 2 I always loved the fact that I’m a commander of my own army (army of 6 or 8) and it was a lot of fun.
All DW games from 5, 6, 7, 8 ,9 are crap to be honest . 4 was ok but nothing intressting.
Dw 4 was the best

I've played three as well, I think 4 hit the sweet spot personally.

Dynasty Warriors 3 is my all time fav by far. Not only was it more challenging then the rest but the story was nice n long with plenty of cinema-tics. I’m currently looking online for a new or refurbished PS2 just to buy Dynasty Warriors 3 Xtreme Legends since the devs are to stupid to remaster it. These new wave gamers can have 5 & up

I got 4 to play with a friend, i was surprised that i enjoyed it, im not big into the hack n slash style games, as you seem to feel so over powered. sadly 8 looks like they made you overpowered a bit. any recommendations for similar games? For Honor would be good if it wasnt a ubisoft game lol
yeah but even then im just not into the over powerness of it. I figured out mount and blade was a game that is similar
Social Experiment I liked KoA Reckoning. Hack and Slash Fluidity styled combats with cool spells, but all I used was blink then comboed my weps I think. Been out for a while so itll be cheap probs
Social Experiment same. If you never played 2 or 3 then you should. 4 was the last really good one. 5 empires was fun but the beginning of the end.
3 was my favorite with the extreme legends additions although it’s as dated as 4.
Common foot soldiers are actually competent, dangerous, and take more than 3 hits to kill, sometimes takes a LOT more hits to kill especially depending on their rank.

I would definitely recommend this game as a starting point :) Especially since each DW game tells the same story with a bit more exposition added to each one. In past games, there is an awesome character with an eyepatch (Xiahou Dun) and in this game, it goes through so much detail that at the beginning he has both eyes and you get to play the mission where he LOSES the eye lol.
Whatever you do, do NOT buy DW 9. Any DW before that you are free to buy :)

It should of been called Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Incomplete Edition cause it comes with none of the DLCs that would be part of the "Complete Edition" release of games lol

Bought this for £8.00 yesterday. Bargain I reckon.
I sank hundreds of hours into the DW series as a youngster. I played 2-6 aged 13 to 19 and always loved them. 5 was a highlight.
Now my little boy is 7 and he can't wait to smash some Chinese peons on his dad's old PS4!
Complate Edition.....but all the DLCs are not included. GRRRRRR!

this game is too much sugarcoated in visual effects. it's annoying. plus the officers are now easy to kill. there's no challenge.
