I've had the same Amazon Basics Speedlite for 2 years now, its still going strong. It's never failed while shooting indoor event photography(often poorly lit)anime conventions, quinceaneras, sweet 16s, or even weddings. I use a circular soft box (Neewer 16"/40cm Portable Mini Round Soft Box) or shoot through umbrellas and it produces great results. For groups I use a second Amazon speed lite and they don't have any problems communicating to my Altura Wireless Flash Triggers. Nice budgetography set up. I didn't know about the Yongnuo flash though, this video gave me a second option in the event I need something stronger in the future.
A white pop of light is a white pop of light. The biggest differences are durability, consistency, and feature set. It's not terrible for what it is. I do think I burned mine out on the intervelometer test.
I burned an AmazonBasics out shooting at 1-2 sec intervals. It gave a loud pop, stopped working, and was very hot. Funny, I was using 4 of them slaved together, all at the same power, and the others were still cool and had no problems. Manual lists max cycle rate as 480/hr (8 sec intervals) at lowest power and 100/sec (36 sec intervals) at max power to avoid over heating. Amazon replaced it no questions asked.
Vert clear test.i must admit Those speedlight are less used than filming days, but at this price, take one for dark scenes, it does the job. Congratulations for the démonstration 👍🏻 Fred
This light seems to work for me in daylight using Flashpoint Transmitters. Flashes every time...great for doing cemetery shoots. But keep your main ones on hand.
I took a long look at this as a very occasional supplement to a studio strobe, which it's comparable to in functionality. Eventually decided on a Sunpak DF3600u which has a lot more power and a typical feature set for just a few more bucks, but this could have its uses. Thanks for the review.
Thanks! I think the most intriguing thing about it for sure is its price. But after the review there's a reason I have a bag full of Yongnuo 660s, haha.

The optical sensitivity in even evening light is sorely lacking it seems, even with the pop up flash right on top of it. Kind of a shame as my camera lacks a hotshoe, meaning optical is the only way to flash things. Will probably return mine.
@@joelwilliam5726 I don't think there's a whole video worth... Plus I only have experience with a small handful of units I have owned throughout my career. But here's what I can say. If you look at this video, I needed a small light in an awkward spot, and I had an extra in my bag. czcams.com/video/11f_3HljHM8/video.html If you use pocketwizard, you need larger ones that have a PC Sync port. In the end, does it have the power / battery life / trigger options that you need? Best of luck! Let me know if you want to see anything else.
Pump a AA battery down, hold, and up a whole bunch of times in each spot to wear down the spring back force until the batteries 1) sit lower and 2) don't push out so hard. The tabs that engage the cover could break off after just a few times of use. Don't ask me how I know.
I just got a godox tt350, i really recommend it as a first flash, just make sure you use it with good quality aa rechargables. Because it doesnt work well on alkaline batteries
Hello friend! Excelente video! Btw can you help me with something? Can you tell me what’s that kind of belt your wearing that you can hold all on you lenses and stuff? I would love to get one, thanks for you time pal!
I know it’s an overuse phase but you do get what you pay for. If I bought a $30 flash it would just be a back up geewhiz if something else breaks flash I would not use it for my constant piece of equipment
Very true. I think the idea here is "what exactly ARE you paying for?" It's very stripped down for sure, and there are better long term options, but it's not bad for someone starting out.
Just wondering, how would you go about setting this flash up for off camera use? (Sorry, new to flash portrait photography.) Would this flash be compatible with a wireless flash trigger/would you be able to sync multiple of these flashes together that way? 📸
Unlike the Yongnuo (or new expensive Nikon/Canon models) the Amazon doesn't have an internal trigger. That means you'll need a radio trigger that fires via hot shoe or PC sync cable. I use Pocketwizard, but if you're just starting out there are a lot more affordable options too.
Pretty much any flash except Canon and Nikon is system agnostic as long as it has a hot shoe. I would definitely look into either the Yongnuo or Godox.
i have a ONN external flash - brand new works on my other rebel canon cameras T3 and T5 just bought a T7 and it will not work with it - its only a 30 dollar unit. but not working has batteries, and works on other rebel camera. have watched 20 videos and did everything in the menu plan under the flash icon possible. message is external flash function setting - menu not available flash is off or unsupported or an accessory is attached. help
It's possible it's not seated properly, or it's possible something is defective in the hot shoe. Someone at your local camera store should be able to help.
@@NOMcreative I JUST FOUND THE ANSWER - the new canon does not have the center thing - the other canon does - on the shoe there is a spot that needs to connect - so i need to get one for the T7 that will match up. growl lol thanks for answering.
Have you tried using 2 of these as slaves? I'm looking to do some product photos and need lighting from multiple sides. I'm worried that with such a cheap speedlite it will not fire perfectly in sync and will throw shadows where one went off before the other.
I haven't, but as long as you're doing your product photos in a studio with line of sight, I imagine it will work just fine for you. I have never had problems with slave triggering in studio. It fails as soon as you go outside or shooting alongside other photographers.
I’m supposed to do birth photography for a friend and I need a flash in case the room is too dark for my camera, however I don’t have money for a canon speedlite, would this be a viable option for a VERY poorly lit (dark) hospital room? Also would it be trustworthy for something like a birth that will only happen once and be very unpredictable? Thanks in advance :)
At the end of the day, a pop of white light is a pop of white light. If you're in a controlled environment and aren't going to use motor drive, then it will probably do you just fine. If you can spring a few dollars more for a Godox or Yongnuo, that will probably work better for you in the long run.
If you have some super fancy camera and lights with built in triggers, sure. But unless that's the case, you need a trigger for every light. If you don't have that kind of money (or if you want to save time) then you can turn on optical slave and use as many lights as you want all with just one trigger.
@@NOMcreative That's really weird to. So its not possible to use the hot shoe flash the same way you would use a built in pop up flash without the camera being extremely expensive?
@@Yoko.Kurama so you can technically use the built in flash to trigger optical slaves. It will only work if 1) you have line of sight 2) it's dark enough for the sensors to register. At home, yes. Outside during the day, no.
