Before & After Pitch-Center Demonstrations

  • Here is a video demonstrating the effects of pitch center on intonation, sound, response, and general playability in both trumpets and mouthpieces. The demonstrations detail why most instruments sound and feel different in every register, sound and feel different through the various valve combinations, and why pitch and resistance change at different dynamics. We used a brand new mass-production non-Monette trumpet supplied by Mike Thompson from Thompson Music for the demonstrations.
    We hope this helps answer the questions we continually get on this subject! Dave Monette personally went through the instrument used in this video and made corrections in pitch center in the open horn and in each valve. The before and after video clips make the improvements obvious. These adjustments are built into every Monette instrument.
    Mike may offer the instrument in this video for sale. Please contact him for details: Mike@thompsonmusic.com

    Thank you for all that you do for the music world and trumpeters and for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
    After decades of playing on traditional mouthpieces you changed my whole approach to how I play using your constant resonance mouthpieces (both for my trumpet and flugelhorn). The ease of producing notes, with perfect intonation and silky timbre is simply amazing.

    When I played on Monette once I decided to sell my CLK convertible and I realized it still wasn’t enough to own one lol. Nevertheless These are dream-horns to play and own and worth every dime.Love your work Dave & Team. Please don’t stop making them.

    This is insane! Man those pitch centers are so off then get fixed. I'd love to fix all the compensating I do to manipulate the horn for good intonation. I've already bought a monette resonance. Those mouthpieces fix a ton of things but if you also had a horn that had constant pitch center holy moly what a pleasure that would be!

    Wow, Dave is actually offering this tech to “a certain company in the Midwest”. Dave, I’d be surprised if you didn’t already know exactly who to talk to there. BTW, John Aley was my teacher in the mid 80s, and had one of your earliest horns. I always wanted to try it but he understandably was not into germ transfer.

    How are you adjusting the pitch center of the horn? I'm a little confused when the video says Before or After Horn Was Adjusted. Or how about, can I send in one of my trumpets to you guys to have it get the pitch center adjusted?

    • @MonetteCorporation
      @MonetteCorporation  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you for your comment. We don't publicize our proprietary techniques for adjusting horns so I can't answer your question about that. We constantly have our hands full working on our own instruments so adjustment work on non-Monette instruments is not a service that we are currently offering. If that changes in the future we will certainly put the word out. If you have other questions feel free to contact the shop: stc@monette.net.

    • @carl_irwin
      @carl_irwin Před 4 lety +2

      My logical guess is that they have a formula for proper slide lengths that correspond to the natural qualities of the open horn... some are cut down a bit, some may get expanders, etc.
      Try playing around a bit with your slides (pulling them out) and a tuner at home.

    • @davidgagnon2849
      @davidgagnon2849 Před 3 lety +1

      @@carl_irwin That doesn't explain the three Cs he played, which of course are open. Not sure if Monette mouthpiece alone did that.

  • @InfiniteQuest86
    @InfiniteQuest86 Před 4 lety +1

    So really what they are saying is that it's not the player, it's the horn.

    • @MonetteCorporation
      @MonetteCorporation  Před 4 lety +7

      Pitch center is affected by many different things, in all three parts of the player + mouthpiece + horn system. The player is the true instrument!
