I know you wanted to follow Marie Kondo so remember that the things you keep are supposed to spark joy. When I went through my wardrobe I ended up getting rid of the dresses I wore to several funerals in my close family. Up until that point they had felt important to keep, but they didn't spark any joy. Getting rid of them also made me realise that hanging on to them only reminded me of the funerals, but what I really wanted to remember were the lives of the people that I had lost. Obviously it's a decision you have to make when you're ready for it, and maybe that dress needs to live in a box for a few more years, but if you're ready for it I would sit down and hold it for a while and really examine if it brings you any joy and if it doesn't maybe it's time to let it go ❤

This!! from commentor Anna Timm: "Things that spark guilt/shame, sadness, grief, wistfulness, ambivalence, frustration: hug and thank them for serving your life and let them move onto their next life, or to be recycled if condition is too bad."
Stephanie, I'm only 6 minutes into this vlog, but I had to stop and comment. Your memories of your father's funeral will always be with you. You don't need to hold onto the dress to hold onto memories of him. You are not negating the memory of your father if you get rid of the dress.
I've done some massive clean outs in my day. My father died far too young and I held onto many of his items as talismans. One of the most difficult things I finally let go of was my father's high school yearbooks. I held onto them for ages before realizing they had meaning for HIM, but they didn't for me. I recycled them and have never looked back.
Stephanie, you have a huge house you want to clear out, to make space for new pieces and new memories. Thank the item for the meaning and purpose it had in your life. Now it's time to let it go to provide meaning and purpose in someone else's life.

Having sooooo many rooms in your chateau, why not instead of small closets, take one small room, organized by seasonal, costume, and cocktail (evening ware) hats, less used scarves purses, less often used shoes. Then, you can have the smaller closets used for your towels, sheets, pillows and extra blankets, and back-up tolietry. Then in your new clothes room, hang full-length mirrors, good lighting, maybe even a chandelier, and spruce it up with chairs, ottomans, and whatever else tickles your fancy??? All of your everyday use of clothing can be kept in your bedroom wardrobe.

I think Stephanie and Phillip need to reread at least part of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up! Seeing the trouble on her face when she’s unsure of a garment made me sad! the idea is to assess what feeling each item sparks inside you and hone your ability to recognize the feeling of joy. Things that spark guilt/shame, sadness, grief, wistfulness, ambivalence, frustration: hug and thank them for serving your life and let them move onto their next life, or to be recycled if condition is too bad.
If anyone wants to attempt a clear out, I HIGHLY suggest reading the book. I was someone who wanted to keep everything, and my ADHD makes buckling down to clean out really difficult to focus (it used to be everything I picked up used to distract me). The philosophy of why the method in the books works really resonated and changed my approach! It’s been nothing but a benefit!

Selmar needs the wood from redwood tree when you cut it down. It is a very expensive wood. He can use it to make furniture or anything his heart desires. He would love the wood and I would like to see something made from it.

Could it be milled in long planks and used to build shelving in the china room? I know redwood is hardy for outdoor uses, but have no idea how it works for indoor shelving, especially with delicate things placed on it. Some wood ooze stuff.

She is sorting like me. I ended up building a huge walk in closet and closets the full length of my longest interior bedroom wall. I was usually happy I kept my better quality pieces because they were great quality and always came back in style and I stayed a 4 or 6 for 30 years. Most newer clothing items aren’t made with great materials. It did help to donate casual items like jeans or shirts that I knew I would never use and suits I wore professionally that my daughter didn’t want. Donated them to a program that trained women to go back to work. Stephanie should get the space saver hangars that Joy Mangano once sold. They were great quality.

Why should she?Im with Stephanie on this.I just wish I was still as slim as her still. Those clothes have obviously given Stephanie and her friends many hours of great joy.If you have the space why shouldn’t you keep things for as long as you want to?Some people’s memories are triggered by physical items, the smell and feel of things as much as the look.Different people collect or are interested in different things and history.
I’ve got vintage items that I bought when I was at Uni too, some from the 80s and some as far back as the 1930s ,I just wish I could fit in them🤣I will have to sell/give some of them away soon as I will be downsizing from a 3 bedroom to 1 bedroom place and it hurts. If I had a Chateau,I’d devote a room to them all in those lovely armoires and glass cabinets and I’d keep my books on the history of fashion in a bookcase.
