Love the content! I just got the MPC myself and want to incorporate it into my drumming... or vice versa!
Hype is pretty cool, but Akai needs to have a good manual for it. For instance, there are hidden features, like a rotary speaker effect which only appears when you choose an organ sound. The different init presets also seem to hide/unhide certain aspects of the synth engine.
Connected the MPC One to the MPC software and ran Kontakt plugins. Makes this thing so much more fun.
Nice dude, I love my MPC one. Still learning it tho and watching your stuff has really been helpful. I plug my minilogue xd, roland tr06 and play guitar overtop it all. The mpc does the chords and bass, tr06 does drums and I play electric guitar.
I'm really hoping one of these beat makers will start targeting non electronic musicians. I'd love a simple workflow that would allow me to use an mpc or similar as an overgrown looping pedal

Not sure it's really a good choice for an overgrown loop pedal, especially for the price you might find somethings better. That said, you can certainly create rock/pop/blues/jazz drum parts, keys, bass, etc. to make your own backing tracks. Maybe that's kinda what you meant, now that I think about it. You can also get some crazy rhythmic stuff going by playing with time signature and setting tracks to different lengths.
It's a really good device which does quite a bit more than everything else at its price point. And the Force works even better, addressing the shortcomings with song mode and the difficulty of working with many different patterns (er, sequences). I'm glad stuff like this exists.
Man Gabe. I have had the MPC One for a couple of months now, and recently got the Tascam Model 12. The two, are a match made in heaven. You would flip out. In a good way.
Highly recommended grabbing one if you can.
Yeah, rather Tascam Model 12 is pretty damn awesome, and it AND the MPC ONE (as well as that specific MPC model range) make fantastic bedfellows.
Experienced guitarist turned synthwave producer here. You are not alone. Every recording session I've ever done has gone like that. You got the part down - job done.
Good video 👍. I find the versatility of the MPC outweighs its less user-friendly moments. It's my go-to recording device over my Korg multitracker or DAW.
Like you I typically process during recording - it's quicker and forces me to decide up-front if that's the right sound so I don't end up with a zillion iffy parts in the mix.

Hey Gabe! Thanks for all this informative goodness that is your channel. I'm looking to get my very first music production device ever, and the roland sp 404 mk2 really got my attention as a guitar player looking to get into digital stuff because it's a standalone sampler which i can also use as an audio interface with amp simulations and a great fx section.... with that said the workflow on the mpc one looks waaaaay smoother, but pretty lackluster when it comes to jamming, which is my primary objective. Ideally i would throw together some samples, jam over them with the guitar and mix it up with fx as i record the whole thing in the daw: i don't want to worry about making full songs yet, with mixing and mastering and stuff. I just want to have a good time, I don't release music. Since you own both devices, would you say it's worth sacrificing the great versatility of the 404 for a smoother workflow on the mpc, or would i be giving up too much "jammability"?

Great video! You're a drummer? It's interesting how many beat makers/producers/electronic music fans are drummer. As a guitarist, I know other guitar players are often quite hostile to the idea that a 'computer' could do their job, however there are several CZcamsrs who are drummers and ended up being SUPER into beat making and drum machines.
Thanks! I've noticed that too, I think it's partly because of how big and loud drum kits are, so we go looking for other ways to get our rhythm fix. And for me, it was also a way to be a one man band, despite not having formal training in something like guitar or piano. Dance music and hip hop let me lean more heavily on my rhythmic background. I'm guessing that's the case for other drummer-turned-producers as well.
@@GabeMillerMusic yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I think the one-man-band thing is what brought me into this space, too. I can sort of keep a beat on a drum kit, but that ARE very loud, and I can't really get a good recording, so drum machines of some sort have been in my home studio since... the early 90s? I'm old. Alesis SR-16 was the first, and they STILL MAKE THEM. Crazy. Once I took the leap to an MPC Live II, all sorts of new worlds opened up.
Is it possible to make a continuous flow of music live from this machine, so it sounds like an endless mix

Really enjoying your content, Mr Miller, thank you - especially the MPC One vids a la the above. Quick question - are you plugging your guitar directly into the MPC? I've been running mine through the SP404 MK2 and running audio into the MPC. I find the latter's amp sim and effects rather good for tone.
I can dig it. In this case I just plugged my guitar directly into the MPC though, since I didn't need the tone to be anything fancy.

When live performance is not needed, do you like the MPC One or Force better for recording full songs with guitar?
Have you considered getting your hands on the SmplTrek? Maybe Sonicware is even willing to solicit a review unit since reviewing groove-boxes has become part of your signature program.
grabbing a stylus pen helps with the grid a bit. It's still pretty clunky, but better than just using my finger.

Even though I use Ableton Live with a controller I am starting to feel Force can make me more productive because it keeps my mind on the music instead of all the options. Any thoughts?
I usually prefer more compact setups, so I reach for the MPC One for more casual beatmaking, but I've got some bigger, more production heavy song ideas brewing... Once I get around to fleshing out those ideas, the Force will make a big comeback on this channel.

yup, Force is the best. I still kept my mpc one though.
If your fine being stuck in 4/4 at all times the Force is a better unit. But if you want different time signatures and tempos in a song the MPC is light years ahead of the Force.
In short good god Akai give the Force time signature and tempo changes.
I just ordered my MPC one Gold yesterday & I should have it tomorrow & I had one question I know that you cannot load 3rd party VST plugins directly into the MPC but isn’t there a way to Load a VST plugin in a DAW like Ableton & then sample it back into the MPC? Because I really want to use the Korg M1 VST plugin along with my Roland JV-1080 Midi Sound Module that has the 5Pin MIDI IN/OUT
Are you connecting the guitar straight to the MPC or through a pre-amp?
Does it let you loop over any section of a wav file while laying down midi drums at the same time?
If not, then do you know of any hardware that does?
Adequate is a fair way of describing the amp sim. It will do the basic job but there are far far far better options available. Its surprising as Akai is under the same umbrella company as Headrush which offer some pretty impressive amp sims and runs on the same chipset as the MPC. In any case the amp sim in MPC will be reasonable, but not great.
7:40 what's the easiest way to load an audio track onto a drum track? I use the sampler but Akai haven't given us a way to record into the sampler while keeping in sync so it means taking time to align.
If you have an audio track active and armed, then hit the rec button and play from start (like I do around 11:13 when recording the synth), it should give you a count in, then start recording right on the dot. I used more or less the same process to record the guitars, although since sometimes they took a couple of takes, I ended up just grabbing the second half.
If recording guitar it's better to use a preamp before going into the MPC. Alternatively you could use a pedalboard that has has amp/cab/mic/effects etc such as Line 6 Helix, HX Stomp, Headrush, Boss GT 1000, Fractal FM9, etc.
I found it surprising that you barely use Song Mode. I always use Song Mode unless it's just 1 long sequence. I never use pad mutes or sample from anyone besides myself.
MPCs are great but I still use a DAW for some of my music. I'll sometimes start everything on MPC, get about 85% done, explode tracks or export stems, transfer to DAW, add vocals, guitar, and final touches...mix, master, done. There's really no right or wrong way to create your own music. I love my MPC Live 2 and it's one of the top 5 pieces of music gear I use.
Yeah I prefer to just export the stems of individual sequences and do the arrangement in my DAW (unless I'm doing a jam thing for a video).

Thanks! I think we're in the rumors stage right now, so I have no idea if or when that will arrive. I'm guessing it'll feature more RAM and maybe Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but for me personally that wouldn't be enough to make me upgrade.
You never mentioned the clips mode...which is fine because it totally sucks.
Where this rocks for my live setup is that you can hook a USB hub to it and use it to route an entire rig of gear around. It's very powerful for this.

Great video!!! I have a question: I wish I could set up the velocity range of a drum program. Let’s say: instead of using the full (or half full) button, I’d like to have the ability to set a velocity minimum range (i.e. Value 100) and a maximum of 120, so when I play and record it doesn’t hit too soft or too hard if you know what I mean. Is there a workaround to do so? Cause I can’t find it even I have the MPC Bible… Thanks in advance ❤
You can adjust velocity after recording on anything you record internally. Go in to grid view and at the bottom where it says Velocity, tap the tiny arrow to the right of it. From there you can adjust velocity if you click on the square at the top.
You can also adjust velocity in MENU - LIST EDIT. Tap the top number under VELOCITY and hold SHIFT to tap on specific notes or anything you want to change the value of, use the dial to change the value.
I'm not sure if what you're saying specifically can be done, but if you want to do it for specific drums one by one, 16 levels set to velocity might be the go-to.
I have a Roland VerseLab, my first electronic device. I find the workflow really intuitive and fun. I have been looking at the MPC One to get different sounds , leverage the sampling capability, and to better understand the MPC workflow. Is there a different device you would recommend for someone who likes the VerseLab?
If you like the Verselab but want to go deeper into sampling, I think the MPC is a solid bet. Some sort of Maschine might also be worth a look.
I have a Verselab too, and I went back and forth between that and wanting to get an MPC One. At this point, I admit I'd have been better served with the MPC. It has USB host controller/audio interface ability, better pads, automatic sampling, great sample chopping, more tracks, and so on. The Verselab has great effects and a pretty good sequencer, but without partial editing, you're stuck with sound packs/presets unless you buy Zenology Pro.
If you like a clip based sequencer get the Akai Force.
Get a used mpc one. The thing is just hands down the best value for money and can do so much. I use the Force more these days, but it's more of a commitment in terms of cost and its just soooooo big that it's a bit unwieldy.
Can I split the inputs into 2 seperate Mono and use it like a circuit tracks ultra ?
I think you should be able to, although I would need to double check. I would expect the different audio tracks to be in your track mix, if you take it from programs to audio tracks. You'll probably have to arm stuff and set their inputs from there.
Hey Gabe (or anyone), what's a good forum to discuss grooveboxes, daws, etc. Love the videos, but sometimes questions come up that aren't relevant to the video. Also, if a video has been out for a while there's minimal engagement, as is the nature of the internet.

Would it be ridiculous to ask you to make a video of using the MPC ONE as your stem player(aka backing tracks)?? As someone making electronic music, I REALLY don’t want to be tied to a computer(ableton) or tablet while performing music live. I realize that can create extra work, but I’ve been down that road with a few devices(Digitakt/ 1010 Bluebox) & it would seem to me that with a few inconvenient exceptions, the MPC ONE seems capable of doing that.
So basically if you HAD to use your MPC ONE as a stem player(primarily synth/loop related parts of music) that a band or solo musician could stay in sync with, how would you do it?

I don't know if it's something I'd make a dedicated video on, but if it was me, you might have decent luck using the clips. They're basically just holding tanks for loops. They don't launch like traditional Ableton clips (you'd still need to have stuff in sequences as far as I know), but that's probably worth looking into.

OK...guitar, bass, sp 404. I have seen alot of other devices connected to the MPC...Has anyone connected a microphone to the MPC? If so how did it work for u?..I want to take my MPC Live 2 on the road but I need a mic...Need some advice. Thankz
This is something I plan on trying out. I know it can be done, because why else add that suite of vocal effects? You might need a preamp, I don't know. It's probably a good idea, anyway.
After a lot of stubberness and the fact I started at 1.0 with patterns and scenes on maschine now im using clips only. Finally I can make full songs,change sections without changing other patterns.hell I don't even need scenes and do it like in any daw. I still use my mpc one, but as a sound module via midi or fx processor. (There are some juicy ones on the mpc) So stoked with this workflow on maschine. Stil curious what 3.0 brings to the table for the mpc.

Anyone in south Sweden or Denmark I got one with 6 hours on it listed on Blocket as of last night. Would prefer to transfer in person in Hässleholm , Helsingborg or Helsingor. My phone # is listed on the site. I got an SP404mk2 which suits my workflow better, I really tried to like MPC but I am an ultra minimalist, I will probably regret this but the musician part of me likes the SP404, which is sorta counter intuitive because the MPC by all means murders the SP. not to mention the SP time stretch and fx sound like 💩 Cmon INTUA, BUILD HARDWARE BM3, I will buy five and never look at another piece of gear for life!

RE: Guitar and the MPC...these guys make the Headrush looper. You'd think they'd bake in some of the same functions. Nope...Akai is stingy. It took 2 years for the modern MPC to even compete with an MPC 2000 running JJOS. They're still selling the various iterations of MPC with the same lack-luster SBC (Single Board Computer) from 6 years ago...seriously!? Would you buy a 6 year-old computer that, minus the OS and hardware, only costs less than $150? When Akai decides to upgrade the SBC, include the Headrush looper functions and allows for more that 4 velocity layers per pad...then I'll get behind it. PS: I own a Live, Maschine Plus, 1010 BlackBox, The Deluge, OctaTrack AND the Sonicware SmplTrek...I've done some research.
It’d do things a lot better if it could remember patches per sequence……
the os is one of the worst parts about it needs an overhaul but it sounds good as hardware to me
Yeah it's grown on me a lot, but there are a lot of parts that still feel disconnected and scattered or just more counterintuitive than they need to be.
@@GabeMillerMusic loop mode and step sequencer are bad too the step sequencer is actually backwards to me if it has a nice screen why not just have a daw view for arranging songs idk 🤷♂️
Force OS is a lot better. Takes many of the finer points of MPC but marries it to a proper mixer and Arranger, plus the Clip matrix is so much easier to work with. Still, I love my MPC Live II. But I love my Force even more.

You are really missing a trick right now and I’ve been at you previously in regards to getting a hold of a Synthstrom Deluge and let your subscribers see what they are missing out on.
Your channel has been going for years now and I’m really disappointed that you have not even covered it yet.
Step out the ball park with the Mpc,707,Circuit and bring something different to the channel,,I’m pretty confident that your subscribers will thank you for it!!
I actually do have the ball rolling on trying the Deluge, but it might be a while before it reaches the channel. Please keep in mind that I do this whole CZcams thing part time, and it's largely driven by what I'm interested in at the moment and what I have time and energy for. Please be patient with me, I'll get there when I get there.
