  • In 2013, International Judo Federation (IJF) made a controversial decision to ban all leg grabbing throws in their competitions. It is believed that the main reason was that they wanted to make Judo a more dynamic and spectator-friendly sport. A lot of people like this decision and a lot of people hate it. It doesn't matter what side you are on, you can't deny that competitive Judo lost some impressive throws. So here is a compilation with some amazing throws that involve leg grabbing.

What the IJF should have done to address the issues of the 2008 Olympics: only allow one hand below the belt. That would mean we'd still have huge throws like Kata Guruma, Te Guruma, and hand assisted Sode Tsuri Komi Goshi- while removing the type of Judo that led up to the rule changes.

In February of 2013 wrestling was voted out of the Olympics. This is well documented.
The reason for the rule change was the IOC wanted stronger differentiation between the sports of Judo and Wrestling. The IOC came to both sports with a list of changes that were to be implemented. Judo said ok. Wrestling said "get bent" and wrestling was axed from the Olympics.

"Changing rule to keep Japan win" is the most stupid explanation to the rule change I have ever heard. The whole reason just doesn't make sense at all. Even at 2012 Olympic where Japan did not perform well, they still won a couple of silver and bronze. And their loss was not due to leg grab. So how was leg grab ban help Japanese? Especially when Japanese were in fact quite good at leg grabbing...

This style of grappling was probably founded on the idea to make Brazilian Jiu Jitsu more entertaining by discouraging guard pulling and incentivizes players to be more explosive.

In theory these techniques are still useful and perfectly legal in BJJ. The problem is BJJ practitioners’ underdeveloped standing game as a result of the pointing system which rewards takedowns poorly and strongly groundwork-oriented mentality.

I only recently got aware of the tournament aspects and its rules of judo. I simply never cared about it, assuming it would be something realistic.
Then, a few days back I watched a judo tournament for the first time and I could not follow any decisions made. I did not get why someone got penalties, I did not get why someone scored... How can this be more spectator friendly?
There was also nearly no ground fighting. Which - contrary to some BJJ fanboys - is a big part of judo as a sport.
So maybe - to make it truly spectator friendly they should drop all that point awarding nonsense and have submission matches instead. My humble opinion on the matter.
