Tip for those who are learning this technique, as the tip of your knife makes contact, do Not follow through pulling the tip off the edge of the belt or wheel. Lift it off just before you follow through.
This will help to prevent you from rounding over you tip, tearing into your belt or wheel, or worse overheating the tip.
If you rewatch the video you will notice he lifts off and doesn’t pull the tip off of the edge of the tool.

Once again, great tutorial and info. Hadn’t heard of the paper wheel system but will definitely give them a try at some point.

Great sharpening video. Sharpening has always been my arch-nemesis, and has caused me to quit knifemaking half a dozen times. 😅 I keep coming back though... I started with a Lansky style jig, then paper wheels, but couldnt quite get the hang of them, so I went to the 2x72, but still wasn’t happy so I’m currently getting pretty good results on a Tormek clone made by WEN l, but it takes f.o.r.e.v.e.r. I may have to revisit the 2x72, but hold it the way you do and then maybe use the WEN stropping wheel for the polish.

What is the quality of the edge for utility work? I’m concerned about the slightly hollow grind versus a convex grind for my larger, heavy use blades, machetes, etc., before I invest in a bench grinder, MDF wheels.
I’m wonder if I could just get the MDF wheels for a do all, or should I get the work sharp Ken onion thing for a more durable, convex edge.
    What do you think?

What’s something a regular guy can have on hand for putting a little touch up on a pocket knife on the go. Saw a little key chain thing somewhere on CZcams. Guy called it poker chip or something along those lines. I don’t know much about this stuff yet. Thx for any advice on getting my feet wet .

I’m not at all into the Paperwheel, but I’ve tried it. Too dangerous and I don’t have the space. 400 grid and 800 grid on the belt grinder in quite slow reverse on top (away from me). I must try to find a leather belt here in Europe. A good stropping to get rid of the burr and I’m good. Takes max 5 minutes.

The way you pass the blade back and forth over those wheels 2 or 3 times is going to overheat the edge and reduces Rockwell. Slow those wheels and belts right down and spray water on them. One pass and dip.

  • @jasonvliet-odonataknifeworks

Great video! I’m just getting into knife making and the paper wheel system looks pretty solid to me. I just ordered one and I found a 2 speed grinder that Buck tools makes. Runs at 1750 or 3500 RPMs. Ordered that too. I figured if you use it and make a living doing it, it’s probably good enough for me. Thanks for all the content. Love the channel!

Unless you are good at this you end up like me with a dull knife. Got to have a fixed angle guide. I know you can do it, but I am not able to hold the angle so my knives are often worse after "sharpening."

Good video...but brother, protect those eyes. All the gear and skill ain't worth shit if you're blind! I've started using the paper wheels and really like them, but I find for kitchen knives, I like a bit of tooth on the edge, so I don't polish them as much as pocket knives. Also been pretty happy using 3M Trizact belts. You can get them super fine.

LOL! If you’re hand sharpening, you’re not even in the same ZIP code as truly razor sharp. Razor sharp is sub 50 on the BESS scale.
