  • Yamaha knows good sound, and if you're building a home theater sound system on a budget, their RX-V4A and RX-V6A receivers are up to the task. You can power your speakers, stream music, and even connect to your MusicCast system.
    Yamaha RX-V4A: www.crutchfiel...
    Yamaha RX-V6A: www.crutchfiel...
The Yamaha RX-V4A might be one of the best receivers for the money. It's a 5.2-channel receiver, so it'll power a full surround setup. It's got built-in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Yamaha's MusicCast whole-home technology. That makes it easy to stream music from a device, and Yamaha's app lets you fine-tune your settings.
The RX-V6A adds a couple more channels and a little more power, but also offers some key upgrades. It's got Dolby Atmos and DTS:X processing so you can add some height channels if you like. It can power speakers in two different zones, and it even has a built-in phono preamp. If you need a receiver to do some heavy lifting in your setup, the Yamaha RX-V6A can handle it.

You may wish to pull this video and re-do it. There's a lot of misinformation here.
@0:40 "...100 watts for each of your speakers." This is misleading. It's 100 watts per channel in stereo mode only. When powering a multi-channel system it's less.
@1:18 "...all of the inputs are HDMI 2.1." All 4 inputs on the RX-V4A are HDMI 2.1. Only 1-3 on the RX-V6A are 2.1. 4-7 are 2.0b.
@1:46 "..they'll be able to pass along HDR10, HDR10+..." No mention of Dolby Vision which this receiver supports out of the box. HDR10+ is coming with a future firmware update, and on the 6A will only apply to inputs 1-3.
@2:08 Your description of Auto Low Latency Mode is suspect. ALLM tells your TV to go into game mode.
@2:31 "...enhanced audio return channel, so you can get Dolby Atmos from your TV." This isn't clear, but implies only eARC passes Atmos from your TV to your receiver, which is not the case. ARC can pass Dolby Digital Plus and if the stream has Atmos metadata then that will be included too.

@@crutchfield KRK Rokit 6 G3 active studio monitors. I got them for my 21st bday years back and have been using them with RCA to 3.5mm jack to my TV ever since I got a tv. I didn't quite appreciate the thing now though that most speakers are passive and the recievers/amplifiers generally only have outputs for passive speakers (except for the subwoofer) as your main speakers, which I found out the hard way by wondering wtf is going on why can't I just plug my RCA to RCA cable to one of the 'audio 2/3/4) slots on the rx-b4a (it arrived this afternoon) and hear sound. Turns out I need to buy a 'speaker-level to line-level adaptor' (found out from one of the crutchfield videos actually!) to convert the RCA plug to the regular speaker wire, whilst it also filters the power coming from the reciever so it doesn't fry my active speakers. Seems like kinda backwards for this day and age to not have standard support for active speakers, especially cos of the fact it seems you have to pay top dollar for a really good reciever to power powerful speakers, whereas life would be so much easier and cheaper if the speakers can power themselves.

@@crutchfield thanks for the recommendation. Unfortunately though here in the Netherlands the v6a is €739, Vs €539 for the v4a, so it's quite an extra expense just for that extra functionality (I only have a 2 speaker set up, so the extra 7.2 Vs 5.2 is wasted for my purposes). In the previous Yamaha receivers models , they have a setting to adjust subwoofer crossover when in LFE mode.
But in this model V6A , yamaha remove subwoofer crossover and replaced it with ( center , 2 fronts and surround crossover )
Someone told me to set all the speakers to 60hz , so the subwoofer will go down to 60hz , but I doubt it
Is there anyway to adjust subwoofer crossover setting in this model ?

Bought this reciever (RX-V4A) about 6 to 7 months ago. Went from Onkyo to Yamaha. That was a mistake. It isn't passing HDMI signals through. Sometimes all you'll get is the audio and no video. Sometimes you'll get nothing. Before anyone starts fussing at me... I hooked up multiple devices to the same HDMI port to ensure it wasn't the other A/V device, I tried different HDMI ports, I changed out the cables with fresh straight-out-of-box cables, and I even skipped the receiver entirely in my set up running straight to the TV. In all scenarios, anytime the receiver is touching my signal path, I get a "No signal" message on my TV. Reset all devices multiple times, pulled out cables and reinserted all cables... I mean, what else could I do? I'm actually online looking for a how-to on factory resetting. I can't even activate a firmware check because the receiver can't even directly connect from itself to a TV. "No Signal". Are you frickin kidding me??? Yamaha, I'm guessing was a mistake. I only picked it up because there were no Onkyos on the shelf. Lesson learned... Unless someone has some words of wisdom to share soon, I'm going to purchase an Onkyo 7.2 receiver in a couple of days.

@@Yiannis2112 just reviews on Amazon, Steve Guttenberg said they're hard to push and take alot of power. The Yamaha rx-v4a is 6ohm at an 80watts of power rating and Elacs B6.2 are 6 Ohm rated so they may sound muddy from not enough power. Some reviews said they have to turn the receiver way up just to hear them play. I don't like listening to loud play as I will use them for constant surround sound. Now for music and movies that's a different story.

@@joelgonzales7139 I'm not doubting anyone, but it's a 6Ohm speaker with 87dB sensitivity, max out power of 120W (unfortunately no rms measurement is given), two way, bass reflex type cabin and a 6.5 inch woofer. How hard can it be to drive?
CNET's review doesn't mention anything about being hard to drive and they've used a Sony STR1080, which is 165 W (6 ohm, 1kHz, 1 ch. driven with THD 0,9%). Slightly more powerful than the Yamaha which is 145W. These guys don't mention anything either:
      audioplacebo.com/elac-debut-2-0-b6-2-review/
      www.soundmanual.com/elac-debut-2-0-b6-2/
HiFiChoice's review also doesn't say anything relevant to them being difficult.
Also, What Hi-Fi's review doesnt mention anything. They recommend a Marantz 6006 (a 6007 would also be fine) or a Cambridge Audio CXA61. Can't call those two, power beasts with 45W at 8Ohms (60W at 4) and 90W at 4Ohms (60W at 8). Only thing I can think of being possibly problematic is how much the RXV4 dips in power, when all channels are driven. However, we cannot possibly know this, as it's not stated in the specs. I wouldn't worry that much about this, though. With 60W at 6Ohms with 2 channels driven, the only thing the RXV4 would worry me, is not whether it can drive them, but how much if any, headroom it would provide.

Well, there is now processing for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X as a result of having the extra amp channels in the RX-V6A. It also upgrades to a dual-room/dual-source output instead of a Zone B (must play the same source as the Zone A) that's found in the RX-V4A. The V6A also has a phono input for connecting a turntable as well as a 12V trigger output (used to turn on devices when the receiver turns on). Technically, there are different DAC's in them too which is to help process audio for the extra channels , the 6th and 7th channels, that are now available in the V6A model.

Neither of these are 9 channel receivers. The RX-V4A is a 5 channel model. The RX-V6A is a 7 channel model. Yamaha has a design in the RX-V6A receiver where 7 channels can be set in the theater room and 2 speakers in a zone 2 (another room) area can all be connected to the receiver. Then the receiver can play all 7 speakers in the theater room, and when zone two is turned on, reduce the main room to a 5 speaker system. All without having to swap cables or reconfigure the receiver.

There is not a set procedure in the manual for resetting the unit to factory default. I recommend contacting technical support to check if there is a method and if not, getting help making sure the setup is correct. If you purchased it from us, you can contact our technical support for this help. We send their toll free phone number on the order invoice. If it was purchased elsewhere and they cannot help, we recommend contacting Yamaha's support

The best setting will depend on your needs. When the RX-A8A is in standby mode (power off), the Standby Through feature allows HDMI source signals to pass through the receiver to the TV. The HDMI input can be changed using the remote control. So, there's no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch HDMI sources.

After watching a few videos on youtube, this volume issue looks to be a common problem. Any help appreciated

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  Před 10 měsíci

It sounds like the volume scale has been set to dB's since it it giving you negative numbers (i.e. -50, etc...). -50 should be close to, if not 0 using the number scale (i.e. 0-97). In the dB scale, 0 is reference level and often the loudest anyone will play it. If the issue is the numbers and you prefer to see them on a 0-97 scale, page 290 of the owner's manual covers how to change the scale.
Or are you trying to make some different change to the volume levels?

Is there a way to connect Tidal to it the same way I do with Spotify, without having to use that horrible MusicCast App?
In the Spotify App, the receiver shows up as a speaker, so it's straightforward to control from within the app, but with Tidal, the receiver just doesn't show up.

At 0:50 you can see under EXTRA SP2 is says: surround back/ zone 2/ Bi-AMP. If your front speakers have two pairs of terminals, remove the bridge and hook the tweeters up to the EXTRA SP2 terminals on the receiver. There is also a setting to change so the receiver knows you’ve done this. If your front speakers only have one pair of terminals, bi amping is not possible.
