The first new truck I ever drove as a professional driver was a 78 Freightshaker with a 3406B CAT and 15 speed. She would haul the mail and topped out at 92MPH. The guy I worked for was a broker in Mississippi and we hauled chicken to the West Coast and produce back. The speed limit was 55 and we always ran hell bent for election with the CB's and bird dogs working overtime to help us find "Smokey". Rough way to make a living running solo to LA and back once a week.
I remember seeing these as a kid all the time at truck stops during roadtrips back during the 90s. Now you don't really see them. Kind of a sad realization that times have changed and I'm getting older.
Young man, having been in the trucking business for 44 years, I can tell you from experience, those were rough riding, and with today's conventional trucks, they are much better, and less painful to drive. I have driven, a 1978, 1979, and a 1983, cab over Freightliner. They were good dependable trucks, but would beat your back pretty bad. I have also driven, cab over Peterbuilt, KW, International, Ford, Gmc, And Volvo. The GMC, and Ford had the best heaters, even better than KW, AND PETERBUILT. Compared to the other trucks (1977 models) in later years, the heating and A/C got much better as well. Have a wonderful day young man . I'm retired now and glad I am.
I drove one too, It was an 87 Freightliner cabover with the 310 cat and 9 speed. The truck was plain Jane white with spoke wheels and a standard sleeper, single axle and spring ride. I worked for a contractor who ran for Roadway Package System aka FedEx ground now since they were bought by FedEx. Drove from NJ to FL to PA and back to NJ in that thing. The truck was plain Jane strictly business but did have air conditioning which you needed going to Jacksonville during the summer and you wanted to get a good sleep in the sleeper.
So nice to see a lot of these older rigs being resurrected out of mothballs and on the road again. The cost of one repair on these current model computer run trucks will set somebody back a number of mortgage payments while these older trucks can often be self repaired by the owner.
Vince J that one would be a T104064 T (Refer to component information label). From ‘89 to ‘94 (I think), Freightliner made a similar model, the A104064 T, which is what you’re talking about. The T104064 T was discontinued in ‘89, along with the other models in the T-series (Ex. T096064 T, T086064 T). The model designation means: Truck, 104” BBC, 6x4, Truck Tractor. The difference between the A-series and the T-series is that the T-series has the windshield separated by the frame, and the A-series windshield is separated by a black strip instead of the frame. Since ‘86, Freightliner, Sterling, American Lafrance, and Western Star have used model designations that use the same nomenclature.
I always thought of all the later coe's, freightliner had the coolest look. ( mid 80s onward) Something about how mid way up on the front of the cab it starts to angle back, too cool.
Nice Tractor! Here's a question for everyone out there. Does the added weight of the wing actually save fuel due to aerodynamics? Or is it more just to look cool?
@Dude I'm not looking for an argument! But if that's what you want to believe! Hey! who am I to argue with you? I actually thought there might be someone mature enough to answer my question. My mistake! I thought wrong! See Ya!
@@OddBall1958 ive never thought the weight had anything to do with fuel economy , just the aerodynamics of pushing wind over the bulkhead. But they definitely look cool on certain trucks to me..
I've been trucking for 20 years. Nice truck, Like many truckers i have driven many trucks.but to be honest, i never liked cab overs, bounce too much, uncomfortable, to climb in to, but to each there own.
If that old freightShaker was a Black Base and Red and Blue in that paint skeem .Id swear that was my old Rig .. 5X4 and a 1693 Kitty Cat .. she was a freight train slow on the take off .But once she got her Fire Built. She was one Bad little Btch .
Ben Britton oh, OK. It’s true that the metal body of the truck would affect how the antennas work and that a vertical position might not necessarily get the best performance.
Absolutely stunning truck. Man i wish i could drive it for old time sake
I Drove Mainly Cabovers From 70s and 80s And Loved Driving Them. Cats , 13, 10 speed. Spring suspension. Best Trucks Ever Made. 😍❤💯

My 1st truck was an '86 cabover just like this with a 310 cat and a 9 speed. I bought it in north Carolina for 9k in 93. I miss that rig...

That's what trucking was all about. Love that truck!!
Oh that’s a beautiful engine start of that ol’ CAT

Maybe a 1/4 to a 1/2 mile a gallon better
SWEET!
I don't see many cabover semi trux around anymore like I used to a long time ago.
Hey Kevin check out a channel called "Jack's Chrome Shop",
they have a new video out about Freightliner cabovers.
Sweet shaker
He’s on his way to fight Megatron
Nice 👌
Now there's someone who understands antenna theory. Dam, who would sell that?

I LIKE THE CABOVERS TRUCK LIKE THAS
Fine ride! I think it would look better without the turbo wing.
I like that truck 😃
My dad taught me how to drive in
A cabover 1978 freightliner
If that old freightShaker was a Black Base and Red and Blue in that paint skeem .Id swear that was my old Rig .. 5X4 and a 1693 Kitty Cat .. she was a freight train slow on the take off .But once she got her Fire Built. She was one Bad little Btch .
Man that FreightShaker sounds like its got a B model 😺 Cat.
SWEET
Such a beautiful truck they should bring them back
Yep
Why are the CB antennas slanted forward? Is there a practical reason, or is it because it makes them look like devil horns?
When the wind bends the antenna goimg down the road
It will stand straight that or his standing wave SWR was low with it set toward .
Ben Britton oh, OK. It’s true that the metal body of the truck would affect how the antennas work and that a vertical position might not necessarily get the best performance.
Ben Britton OK. I thought it was just done for style. They look cool, in any case.
Nice
sounds like a 3406b
Coe nice love
When truck's were truck's !
We called them freight shakers
What was the ones called when Pete,kw,and frtliner merged? I fergawt......
Oh yeah,peterworthshakin
Even with the wheel base stretched, it's still as long as a standard conventional with sleeper. COES Rule
I would say it has the wheelbase of a conventional day cab
@@TxJacob713 on 2nd look, seems about right.
