This looks like so much fun. I caught my 1st striper ever at the Lock & Dam on chicken liver. I like to get a boat one day and go out there and get the big ones. Too scared to get on a kayak.

+GA30901 Lol, boats are good for the big water, no doubt...but the Kayak gets you where the boats can't go ;)
But yeah, as much as I love bass, if the striper are hitting...I'm fishing for striper :P

so you have been mainly using heddon super spooks and soft bait, and what time of the year were the stripers biting? and thanks for the tip.

So, If someone did NOT have a way to get to the water by Boat, Canoe,ect... Where would you suggest to fish and WHEN is the best time of yr! I hear they walk the rocks, but where is that @ ? And how do you get to it ?

+Donald R Turlington Depends on the species you're after. For now I'll assume stripers since this is a striper video, but if you're interested in Smallmouth, Largemouth, etc., just let me know.
If I had to fish from shore for striper, here are some places I would try:
      - Keg Creek Bridge on Clarks Hill Lake from roughly late March - May timeframe (they'll be there afterward as well but nowhere near as plentiful until the fall).
      - Savannah Rapids Pavilion: this is likely where someone is talking about "walking the rocks". What you'll have to do is climb down some old stairs (or another preferred area) from the running trail in between the canal and the river. From there you'll wade out into the water (from rock to rock) to reach the deeper pockets and channel where the striper like to hold.
      - Strom Thurmond Dam: just below the dam there is a well-developed dock and fishing area on the S.C. side, with a less well-developed fishing area on the GA side. I recommend the S.C. side but you'll need heavy gear for this water as the water is fast moving and has many underwater rocks (and BIG striper often).
Hope this helps and have a good one.

where are you launching from? in the past, we've put in somewhere around the middle of the canal and fished around the rocks catching a good mix of largemouth, smallmouth and redeye, but never got into the striper.

+Bobby Augustine I've caught most of my striper between the Strom Thurmond Dam and the Savannah Rapids Pavillion.
I put in at either Strom Thurmond dam (to fish the upper), Fury's Ferry (for upper-middle), Steven's Creek Park (lower-middle), and Savannah Rapids Pavilion (to fish the lower stretch).
The area around the Savannah Rapids Pavilion is the lowest point that I've caught stripers but below there is a great mix of largemouth, smallmouth, and Redeye Bass as you said.

I've fished the canal, but most of my striper fishing / success has all been from shore in the canal.
There are no rapids in the canal, and the easiest put-in spot is Savannah Rapids Pavillion. However, you'll need someone to pick you up downstream around Lake Olmstead.
The Savannah River (main channel) is the best for kayaking down and back upstream, but it's still a workout (worth it IMO). Again, parking at the pavilion is the best option, with dropping off your kayak at the lower bridge there and walking it across the bridge and down the staircase.
Once in there, striper fishing is best up close to the dam with the faster water, while the best bass fishing is around the rocks further down and all the way down the stretch to where I-20 crosses the river.
      Hope this helps :D

hey man, where is this, and what time of the day was it?

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  Před 8 lety

+yadgar266 All depends on what fish you're talking about :P
Most were caught between April and September, with May and September being the hot spots in the year. For time of day, I usually do best for stripers early in the morning or later in the evening.
