  • Gold Trails and Ghost Towns - The Kettle Valley Railway (#21): One of the wonders of the Old West, under the sure hand of engineer Andrew McCulloch this unique railroad traversed some of the most difficult grades on the Pacific Slope. A branch line of the CPR, it outflanked the U.S. based Great Northern Railroad after a gargantuan struggle between the two companies.

Thank goodness there were people, such as these, that had the sense to make the KVR a fantastic trail. I wish everybody could get the opportunity to ride their bike through Myra Canyon....one of the most serene places on Earth.

I walked the 5 km around the Myra Canyon and back before the trestles all burned down. They were not maintained and the big steel trestle had wooden ties that were loose and unattached, sometimes far apart - it was kind of dangerous and certainly unbikeable.

I'm glad I can see it on video, with my vertigo I'd never get across those bridges.

Back in the day I bought a new 1988 Pathfinder, and read Bill Barlee's books to guide me on the backroads of BC, including driving much of the KVR roadbed after they removed the rails but before they made it into an official cycle route. I have digitized a VHS from a KVR guy who filmed some of the last runs before the line was abandoned. It's on my YT channel. I'll post a link to it as a comment to this one, but YT often doesn't post comments with a link.

Its not unusual for families to continue with the profession the family knows, including women taking up their father or husband's profession.

I think this video is quite old, from the 1980s I would guess. Should include production date in the credits or description.
