Hermitcraft vs Main Storage Item Sorter

  • It's finally here, the 8gt encoded multi item sorter. This brand new piece of storage tech can tear through the toughest of sorting jobs. But how much of a match is it against the rampant chest monsters of the Hermitcraft server? In this video we will discover unique ways to analyse the game we play and optimise our item sorting to the extreme.
    I should also point out that the demi-bolt I attributed to Carbsna was in fact originally concieved by Inspector Talon, his video on the design can be found here:

    To be honest, in terms of redstone you lost me three episodes ago, but the algorithm design is really quite fascinating. It's been years since I heard the term Bin Packing.
    As for why you didn't notice a particularly big difference with the Bin Packed encoder, I have two theories:
    1. That your small demonstration has large resolution (ie. each item in question has a larger effect overall due to the smaller size of the whole thing.
    2. You used an exponential number of items for the demonstration, which while allowing you to cover several orders of magnitude, may give an extra boost to such exponential item distributions. Statistical distributions don't usually scale linearly at the extremes

    • @1224chrisng
      @1224chrisng Před 2 lety +4

      There's also another method that uses something called the Thue-Morse sequence. Basically, instead of just alternating back-and-forth, you alternate the alternating. So instead of ABABABAB, you can have ABBABAAB
      It might be nore resilient to different distributions, but less optimized for each. What I'm wondering then is how to generalize this to more than 2 bins

    • @punchster289
      @punchster289 Před 2 lety +20

      main issue with the binpacking is we used the wrong statistic. we don't actually care about the number of items present in storage, what we want is statistics regarding how likely items are to be sorted together. For example, P(Stone | Cobblestone) = probability stone is being sorted given that cobblestone is being sorted.
      We need this statistic for every item given every other item. This can then be represented as a markov chain, from which we can then find the stationary distribution by solving for the eigenvector. If we then run binpacking on this distribution, we would achieve much better results.

    you could optimize sorting speed even more if you considered shuffling item types around according to which items tend to cluster. for example: diorite, andesite, and granite are likely to all be mixed into the same shulker box, so it wouldn't make sense to have all three of those in different slots, since those other slots could be sorting other shulker boxes while your mixed stone box is being drained of one type. this concern is often nullified by the presence of several similar boxes (three mixed stone boxes can be sorted in three separate slices at once, achieving that parallelism), so it really is a tradeoff between being able to sort many identical boxes and many distinct boxes at once

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  Před 2 lety +2

      Technically you want to do the opposite, if stone, granite, diorite and andesite are commonly input in the same sorting operation then you want them to be unloaded in different slices.

    The partitioning is great for load balancing, but have you considered randomizing the order of the items within each slice to optimize throughput? The analogy there is sifting grains of sand through a sieve. Shaking the sieve randomizes the distribution of the large and small grains to get better throughput characteristics.

    • @cubicmetre

    The issue of this system is that it has a static number of sorters for each item/category. In practice you would drop in a larger count of a few item types and most of the sorters would do absolutely nothing. The only way to optimize this approach even more is finding out which different item types are usually dropped in for sorting as a batch (so for example a caving category) and then making sure those arent on the same sorter. Regardless it would still be better to have dynamic assignment of sorters you can always use your full sorting capacity, regardless of the input (kind of mimicing a microservice infrastructure).

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  Před 2 lety

      I had a look at partitions and manually made changes that made more sense, such as separating the terracottas and stone types, it might even be the case that the optimal item set is one built manually through player interpretation, but that would take a lot of time.

    I haven't fully explored your channel yet so I have no idea if you've made something like this before but I've been wondering if you could make a sorting system with a sort of panel interface hooked up to each item that allows for your items to be selected in values of let's say 8, 16, 24, and 32, for output into a single shulkerbox. So for example, you hit a button linked to the 16 value and then hit the buttons linked to the Stone , Redstone dust, and the Oak log storage boxes, the system will spit out 16 stone, Redstone dust, and Oak logs into the single shulker with the option to collect the shulker at any point.

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  Před 2 lety +2

      This concept has appeared before but was mainly only useful for pre 1.8 storage tech before shulkerboxes. If you look at my ultimate bulk it has a similar call based interface which instead delivers shulker boxes of items in bulk. Delivering quantities such as a stack or less at a time is of course possible but not useful in any way, as it would always be faster to grab the stack out of a chest manually.

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  Před 2 lety +1

      You would think so, but in actual fact the encoded MIS at the start of the sorting operation was getting almost full unloader utilisation, the sorting speed skyrockets at the begginning to around 160Kph as it unloads lots of boxes with very few items. Then later on in the sorting operation it transitions to fewer boxes with very large amounts of items. These heavier boxes drag out the total sorting time significantly and I don't believe even perfect paralleisation could prevent this.

      You probably knew this already, but I discovered that you can request items very fast by having two of those machines, because every stackable item can be (uniquely) assigned two symbols. If you sort for the first symbol and second symbol separately, you can differentiate between 30×30=900 different items in a little bit more than 30+30=60 gameticks

    I think the amount of an item in the world is the wrong metric to optimize by. You want to assign some sort of negative association between items commonly found in the same inventory as each other, and try to optimize by penalizing a total score based on how often you have to put those items in the same filter chest. If you have a bunch of shulkers come in from one of your farms, you want each item from that farm to be in a different input chest, but those items might have different drop rates and pretty much just be randomly dispersed throughout the filter chests

    Can someone smarter than me explain how this system has any advantages over the parallel sorter boyenn made (czcams.com/video/NpKJ5sPUCeo/video.html)? This encoded multi item sorter requires the multi item sorter slices to be optimized for the input. If two shulker boxes were to be sorted which had items that both belonged to the same slice, it would have unload them in series. Boyenn's doesn't seem to have this problem as it would just check that the shulker boxes had different items and unload both simultaneously. Maybe I'm overlooking something.

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  Před 2 lety +3

      We have multiple sorting categories, if two items in the same category get queued in series in a 2xHS category they will still be unloaded in parallel because the other box will go into the adjacent slice.

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  Před 2 lety

      The problem was not filupdates that was breaking the machine, it was the fact that I couldn't paste the inventories and kept forgetting about ALL of the items that needed to go in places.

    • @JackTheDev
      @JackTheDev Před 2 lety

      @@cubicmetre yes I see that now, was this with the setting to paste and modify on? Your pasting to another singleplayer world I presume so it should work fully, but even if it does not the setting should have made it work…. What version of litematica do You have?

    • @JackTheDev
      @JackTheDev Před 2 lety

      Looked back, you issue is you took the litematic from a server it can’t know nbt, if you could establish downloading chunks from the server (not client side) you could paste in singleplayer and take the litematic, if not you can wait for survux.
