Best cover I have heard. Rhiannon Giddens voice is a perfect companion for Paul Simon’s beautiful song
I could not agree more. Incredible. Absolutely stunning.
Very enjoyable performance. Thank you.
Three world class musicians, performing to a melody written in 1600, with lyrics by a master wordsmith of our times… what’s not to love?!
I can't think of any other song that revised one small lyric, then brilliantly and completely redefined the song's meaning. Paul Simon's genius never sleeps.
how can any man not fall in love with Rhiannon!!??
Oh Dear God this is a new concept of divinity!! Just stunning. ❤
This performance sent chills down my spine. So beautiful and moving.
She's wonderful! Another great rendition of the Paul Simon song; the change of the two lines makes it more encompassing.
Thanks, Everyone! In 2023, we STILL have SO FAR to go! So sad!
Every time I listen to Rhiannon Giddens, I marvel at her spirit, her voice and her authenticity.
Many's the time I've been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and I've often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but I'm alright, I'm alright
I'm just weary to my bones
Still, you don't expect to be bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home
And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
Or driven to its knees
But it's alright, it's alright
For we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the
Road we're traveling on
I wonder what's gone wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what has gone wrong
And I dreamed I was dying
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying
We did'nt come here on The Mayflower
We came on a ship in a blood red moon
We come in the age's most uncertain hours
And sing an American tune
Oh, and it's alright, it's alright, it's alright
You can't be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day
And I'm trying to get some rest
That's all I'm trying to get some rest
Thank you for the lyrics.
I saw their performance of this tune last fall at Oberlin College, her alma mater. The fall midterms had not yet shown that the American electorate was beginning to reject the duplicitous influence of four years of narcissistic national leadership. The experience of watching Rhiannon perform in what was for her such a formative environment, a song that expresses a formative notion of our country in peril was deeply moving and deeply reassuring. This rendition, created by Turrisi I’m sure, is even more sublime and immediate. At this time of the American holiday of Thanksgiving, I am thankful for an “American Tune”as well as an American treasure.

Absolutely
Ah, I love to listen to Rhiannon Giddens. I have been searching her out for over 8 years and am so happy for her that she has become famous. Her voice, her soul, her original work it is all so beautiful, original and full of heart and truth!
I keep watching this song in various forms. It is so deep and amazing, as is she!
What an amazing performance! Always my favorite Paul Simon song, the change makes the song more universal. Thank you!
She brought the house down with this song two weeks ago at Saffron Hall
What a voice, great piano and violin to.
you can hear any song a thousand times... then Ms. R gets a hold of it and completely reinvents through her lens. Transformation of song is powerful.
Beautiful.
Very moving. Straight to the heart, yes, I'm all right, and tomorrow is going to be another working day at a job I love and where I make a positive difference in healing the world. Now, I am going to take a walk in the woods with my dogs, the rain has stopped, the sky cloudy but clearing, this performance echoing in my mind, the road well travelled. Thank you Rhiannon, Francesco, and Martin, you make a difference that helps and brings hope.
Nice. The Newport one was good too. All the ladies doing well Alison etc
She just performed this recently with Paul Simon on stage again in December at a tribute to Paul Simon concert that is here on CZcams. Also, they performed it together in March at the folk festival in New England (can’t think of the name, but also is on CZcams. I’ll go find it. I strongly recommend watching the Tribute!
They also performed together at the Newport Folk Festival back in March of 2022.
Beautiful!
Thank you for creating these moments.
Such an amazing song- snd her singing it!!
Brilliance!
Niesamowicie piękny głos.
Remarkable!

Oh. My. Wow
Worth digging into the Atlantic Sessions as well - Martin Hayes is there as well.
Thank you, Paul Simon. Rhiannon, you did a superb job deriving this new version of American Tune. Now it is truly an American Tune.

I'm not American and not white, but I don't think the revised lines work. The song is about ,I think, the American dream, about the land of opportunity and how that spirit has been lost(of course from the viewpoint of a White American, but still a vision meant for all Americans). One understand that a Native American and African American would have a different perspective, but this is how Paul saw it at that moment in his life.Still...my favourite Paul Simon song.
Her rendition speaks to all people beyond the imaginary white American nation you privilege in your mind. Listen more deeply, and with a heart more open to truth
I'm a white American, and most of my ancestors didn't come on the Mayflower, and this speaks to me, but more importantly, it speaks to people who are important to me.
I love her voice but this mix is too heavy on the piano and not quite enough on her voice. I gave it an upvote though.
I don’t think changing the line did any good speaking from Black American NOT African American, never been to Africa never will, Race grifting is so below you , love your music though 😊
Great song destroyed by line changes and a very poor singer😢😢
Beautiful!
