Tatting - A One-Shuttle Medallion

  • I often get requests for patterns "from start-to-finish". So here is a new one.
    At 6:26, I show a trick for hiding one of the ends into a ring.
    (Oh, and don't forget to adjust the settings to see the video in HD!)
    I thought it would be a nice little challenge to write up the pattern for this medallion which features on the fabric of a bag I received as a gift.
    You can find the written pattern on my blog
    leblogdefrivole.blogspot.com/2...
    Click on the medallion image on the blog page and it will take you to the pattern.
    Or here is direct link it also: drive.google.com/file/d/1sFOx...
    Please print it and follow along!

    Thank you so much for posting this step by step! I am finally advancing from rings and chains to multiple rows, so this will be a good little project to start developing a new skill.
    I find out of all lace making techniques I considered learning first, this is the most approachable and portable. Sometimes I can't carry around a knitting project but I do not want to have idle hands.

      Thank you for your comment, I'm glad to hear you are making progress and that you find my videos useful. I totally agree with you and it's one thing (of many) that I love about tatting: its portability. It takes no space at all and you can always have a little project on the go to carry around with you. :-)

    I have been "KonMari-ing" my hobbies but have decided tatting 'sparks joy' for me so I'm keeping it .... plus it is a hobby that does not take up a mountain of space. Your new video has made me confirm I made the right decision. I'm going to save your video for a 'must do' later! You are so relaxing to watch and make me believe I can do this with your excellent instruction. THANK YOU!

    This is the trickiest motif I've attempted so far and it is, so far, going pretty well, all thanks to your guidance! Leaving bare thread is rather stressful in my opinion and part of me would rather deal with endless RW and chains to connect the rings, but I have to admit I love how delicate it looks! Practice makes perfect, so I'm sure I'll be more used to this once I've actually finished this medallion (and perhaps try making another?). Thank you for posting a video of making the pattern from start to finish, it is quite helpful!

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  Před 2 měsíci

      Hello, I'm glad you are enjoying this project. I'm sorry you find them stressful but yes, I agree with you that bare threads give a very delicate look to designs that use them. I love making one-shuttle designs and personally find them relaxing to work. Good luck!

    • @Panneapple
      @Panneapple Před 2 měsíci

      @@11Frivole It's been over a week, so I thought I'd give some update: now that I'm more used to it, I can say it's not stressful anymore! One reason I was not too comfortable is that the length of bare thread I left would always be somewhat inconsistent (a little too short at times, a little too long some other times), so it felt like the whole motif would be ruined -- but that's actually wrong. It's actually pretty forgiving. Of course, it looks much better with the proper, regular spacing, but small mistakes or inconsistencies aren't too noticeable from afar and, with practice, I'm getting a much better feeling for leaving an even length of bare thread.
      By the way, did you know where this motif is originally from? I saw it when reading an old book on Project Gutenberg: it's in Beeton's book of needlework, which has some patterns and techniques on tatting, as well as embroidery and some other types of needlework. I like your pattern much better, though: in the book, they use 3 separate rows, instead of climbing up with mock picots and split rings. Since your version is more efficient and there's less fuss about finishing off all those thread ends, it's easier to get into a nice tatting rythm and just enjoy the process.

I do try my best to answer all comments (I occasionally miss some and I'm not always able to reply straight away but I do try to answer all). Yes, it's nice to have a thread with a nice tight twist for firmer tatting but even with a softer thread, you may find your problem is solved by stiffening.

    Decided to pick tatting back up after decades of a hiatus. I originally learned from books, and my goodness how much more fun it is with videos like yours! I had to watch most of the beginner videos too-no, tatting is not quite like riding a bike. My hands did retain a lot of muscle memory though-I know I must’ve spent hours and hours figuring out how to transfer the knot the first time years ago lol.
    Anyway, I subscribed to your channel but have to say I really really love tatting a full project alongside you! Hi Lori, no doubt it's way too late to answer your comment... I seem to have missed it when you wrote it! I use a type of beading wire called "Fireline": it works great because it's fine but incredibly strong and can be folded out of the way.

    Hello I am a beginner but I notice that when I finish my ring I cant pull the working thread with the shuttle to tighten it. I can only pull the other thread. What am I doing wrong?

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Christine, I think it must mean that your knots are not transferred (or flipped) correctly. To start off, check after each half knot you make to ensure that the core thread still slides within the stitches. I have a beginners' video that really concentrate on transferring the knot, maybe that would help?

    I'm not sure if this comment makes sense but-- does the picot stitch count as one of the next regular stitches in between? For instance if I'm making the first ring, is it 2 double stitches, the picot stitch, and then 2 more regular double stitches? Or is it 2 double stitches, the picot, and then one, since on the thread the finished picot stitch counts as one?

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  Před 2 lety

      Hello Erica, the picot makes the first half of the next stitch because the picot is just basically a gap left on the thread between two stitches. Does that make sense?

      Hi, if you would prefer slower movements, I do have other demonstration videos which you may enjoy (shuttle-tatting for beginners for example). This video assumes you know the basics of tatting so it's more to show how to work the overall design rather than how to make the individual stitches. But I'm always happy to receive suggestions for videos from my viewers! :-)

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  Před 8 měsíci

      In traditional tatting, you reverse working when going from a ring to a chain and vice-versa. The side where the double stitch has a little bar across the top would be the front side (sorry can't add a drawing here to illustrate what I'm saying!). In this pattern, there is only one "reverse work" after the first central ring and that is so you can have the shuttle on the right side (accessible for your right hand) after making the mock picot. The rest of the pattern is all worked from the same side. Probably too long of an explanation and no doubt made it even more confusing for you!

    • @11Frivole
      @11Frivole  Před rokem

      Hello Maggi, yes it does matter as the complete stitch is made up of two half stitches and the shuttle has to follow a specific path to make the stitch.
