1/6 GR's can eat themselves to death.
If they get ahold of a 60lbs bag of dogfood; they will eat until their tummies burst.
This genetic flaw is in only 16.7% of them, but still.
I've never heard of anyone loosing their GR this way, but I have known som obese GR's.

I am 63 years old and my husband and I bought a Golden Retriever (who was actually white) from a lovely, thoughtful breeder back in 1979 for my 21st birthday present. She was the most loyal, friendly, patient, loving dog ever. Everyone loved her and her grandparents took turns in babysitting!! 42 years later I still miss her and think of her at least monthly. We keep a lovely picture of her on our LR wall to this day. When we moved to the US from England we had to leave her behind, but she stayed with my Mum and her brother who both doted on her. They sent us regular updates and pictures and spoiled her to death. She was such a happy and caring dog. We will never, ever forget her. And, no, we have never had another one. Only two other dogs who were both strays.

I don't think I stopped crying for 6 months after I found out that Squirt - out two year old goldie - was not coming with us. A few months ago, when my mom was actively dying, she said she saw Goldie in spirit.. It came by her side..
So I was saying that these dogs are our spirit guides..

Our first golden retriever(we’ve had four altogether, two currently) went mad for some donuts we brought home one time. I have no idea why. He was very well fed, not fat, but taken care of. And he had never done anything like that before or since. We put the box of Boston cream-filled chocolate topped donuts at the back of the counter where we thought he couldn’t reach though uncovered because we were going to eat more of them.
But he was a big boy at that point, about a hundred pounds, and apparently had no problem reaching across the counter and quickly yanking the whole box of them down to the floor where he proceeded to scarf them all down in less than a minute. I seriously had gone into the living room just to check on the fireplace for just a minute and came back to him having devoured ALL of the rest of the donuts. I think there were about 10 of them. We thought, oh no, the chocolate will get him for sure! But he was perfectly fine since he was such a big dog.

The dog was also a Golden Retriever. He slowly came toward me, still wagging his tail but he seemed careful as if he knew and gently pushed against me. I let him sniff my hands and he let me pet him, all the while being very nice. Whenever I stopped he didn't bark or anything, bit instead just looked at me. The Scotts are also known for breeding one of the smartest dog: Border Collie. Unfortunately, they forgot to breed in the off switch, seeing the disastrous consequence of their mistake which lead to feathers flying everywhere, toys being worn out within a couple of weeks and carpets being worn down due to never-ending-zoomies. They realised the importance of an off switch and decided add it feature in the goldy.

Border Collies are working/herding dogs and, while generally considered the smartest breed, are usually considered poor pets (unless the owner has a lot of space for them and lots of daily work for them). Seen multiple examples of their behavior around kids and trying to herd them because they have nothing to work on.

I love goldens. My sister has one and he's so good. He's very careful with the elderly members of the family, and good with the tiny tots. She'd take him to her job at the library when it's not open, and whenever someone puts a book in the book drop, he'd fetch it for her to check in. She also taught him to take off her shoes and socks, and then he brings her slippers and puts them on her feet. She's hoping to get him certified as a therapy dog so he can participate in a reading program where kids read books to therapy dogs. I refer to him as a golden cloud of love.

Golden retrievers are so good with children that they literally teach children how to walk them, how to play and how to be boss. They will correct bad leading using a leash, and it's quite amazing to see your barely able to walk 4yo being taught so much in such a small time span.
