    I'm always skeptical about online info & try things only if they will do no harm. So glad I came across this video when looking for "how to worm chickens." Turns out that my eggs were now very messy looking in the nests for no apparent reason. Their droppings were not as healthy looking, nor were they as plump & sleek feathered as usual; that's why I knew it was time to worm & wanted something more natural to avoid chemicals. Well, much to my surprise, the eggs became clean in the nests again within a day or so, the droppings improved greatly & the hens looked better within a few days & weeks. How can I argue with those results; this has been a satisfactory remedy for worming & have used it over the past year when needed . My feed store sells food grade DE for around $23 for the size Becky is showing, it's well worth it.

    Reading the comments here is just completely disgusting. It doesn't matter if you agree with her theory or not. There is no reason to belittle someone who is sharing her opinion. Its also interesting how few of the critics have ever taken the time to make a tutorial video themselves. We as a society have become increasingly cynical and nasty and the anonymity of the internet has made it that much worse.

    D.E is also good for external parasites; mites etc on chickens, as well as fleas, ticks etc on dogs and cats. I also use it for internal and external parasite control of my goats and horses, and if you sprinkle it on the ground in the chicken coop/stables/pet bedding it keep bad smells at bay. I love the stuff :) Unfortunately, it isn't cheap here in Australia, but it's well worth it to keep my animals healthy, and to do it without chemicals. The only thing you have to be careful of, particularly if you have any chronic lung problems, is not to inhale it.

      @@flagwaver1969Um ALL the videos I watch, and that is many, say food grade DE is fine and beneficial BUT you must be careful applying it AND NOT when the birds are in the coop of course. IF you have an active case of worms, besides sprinkling it in the bedding, esp under the roost bar and nook and crannies you work it in a bit (wear masks, again no birds inside coop). ON the bird worms, GENTLY work some in under wings, back of neck feathers, tail feathers. Back yard chicken keepers do this for years w/o respiratory problem IF done gently (wisely).

There are no fleas or flies although the temps are in the high 90's right now in North Central TN! The D.E. (gray food grade) also goes to their dust bathing areas, and they love love love it! I always assumed the spots on the eggs to be something like dried blood. They're smooth spots that come off with a little water and rubbing. I certainly don't think it's "poo". But I'm really not sure... The spots are very dark Brown. I hope I haven't been ignoring something serious. Time for some research! "The chook page" says de doesn't work on intestinal parasites. Two years ago i got my first chickens from a poultry swap. Shortly thereafter i noticed many large tape worms in their droppings. Came across this very video in my search for natural remedies. Purchased two fifty pound bags of de. I stopped seeing worms after a week. Two years later i still have not seen one single worm in their droppings. I mix in a little more de than what will stick to the feed every time i fill the feeder.

    To C. beg to differ with you. DE does work i have used it for all my live stock, goats, chickens, horses and dogs. My Grandfather used it for fly control in early 1950,s and it worked. I have seen it used on show stock because the wormier in the tube was so toxic it killed the stock. Food grade DE is put in popcorn to keep the bugs out. You can give this to the stock free choice and the love it. DE is loaded with trace nutrients which is beneficial to the animals. One other benefit of DE is it helps with the fly control. The poo does not stink. My dogs digest almost all their food. I am not sure about the poo on the eggs as a sign of worms but who knows . I do know the DE put in the pin as a duster keeps the mites away.

      +FindingMyHomestead Kristin Z (intentionallyinspired) hello inspired, I believe it is Diatomaceous Earth. A crumbly porous sedimentary deposit formed from the fossil remains of diatoms. It is used as a dietary supplement, and will kill fleas, mites, and other pests soon after contact. No chemicals just sharp little fragments that pierce the exoskeleton of fleas, mites etc. It's used internally for some worms and other things I believe. If you are going to use it internally be sure it says it's the edible kind. According to some sources we also eat it because it is added to grains to keep bugs from ruining grains in storage.

      This is true. It is full of micro-nutrients. It is good to put in dry dog or cat food and other live stock feed. Used in the barn yard it helps keep fly's down. Have been using for years and won't be with out it. Works great on fire and mounds. Just shake around the mound hill and stir in around the edge of the mound.

    poop on your eggs has nothing to do with worms. the best way to check for worms is to inspect the poop from time to time. you will see worms in the poop if they have worms. poop on your eggs just means either one or more of your hens has pooped in the nest which sometimes happens if your hens sleep in the nest instead of roosting in the coop. or your chicken may of needed to poop but hadn't gone yet and an egg was due. chickens have 1 vent and cloacal which they poop pee mate and lay eggs from and sometimes timing is an issue so just before laying a poop pops out while nesting to lay the egg and then other eggs get mixed up in the poop.
    it's true diatom is supposed go into the digestive tract of the chicken and then through the digestive tract of any worms. as it is like tiny tiny shards of glass to worms it shreds the inside of worms and kills them. however if your chickens have worms the worm eggs will come out in chicken poop and mix in with scratch on the ground and will reinfect your hens or infect others diatomaceous earth should therefore be used daily for a week or preferably more so to kill a whole cycle of worms and stop them laying worm eggs. you should also clean their run bedding and food areas and cover the ground and coop with more diatom powder. diatomaceous earth is also excellent for dusting your hens with all over especially under wings and at the Base of all feathers to treat louse and the worst of all RED MITE during summer and autumn (fall) as it also cuts the inside of mites and causes them to dehydrate and stop laying mite eggs. Red Mite will suck blood from your hens at night and the hens can die of anaemia. also dust your coop out with diatom into every little crack there is no harm for your chickens from too much diatomaceous earth being given and no harm in eating your chickens eggs before during or after a diatom treatment

    I just use garlic or onion mixed in their feed.....one clove of a garlic pod per chicken works fine and even cures a sick chicken that won't eat. My chickens also eat a lot of grass shoots daily. I bought some pale faced chickens the other day and within a few days of them eating grass and grain, their faces had the normal healthy red flush we normally see on organic chickens. You can save a lot on feed by letting your chickens scratch the mud around composting leaves and also by letting them eat grass and weeds. Strangely enough at one time one of my chickens pooped out cow dung poop! And it was fat and healthy with beautiful sheen in it's feathers!

DE does not kill all parasites but this combination does as far a internal application goes. I also put apple cider vinegar in the water. It i good for the chickens and keeps away green algai. As for the argument below: (I would've thought other farm people would be more kind to each other). The chicken poop comes down their intestine and goes out a different opening than the egg. The egg comes down the "oviduct," which is so close to the anus that unless you see a detailed anatomy chart, it's hard to tell, so it’s NOT possible for a hen to lay her egg and poop at the same time, or for poop to get on an egg inside a hen, or even on the way out. If poop is on the egg, it's because their nesting boxes should be cleaned more often (daily is what Vets say) Check a more detailed anatomy chart on the chicken and you'll see it for yourself, with names of openings, the path of the egg, the path of poop and so forth. Look at several different charts so you can be further convinced. If any of that doesn't end the argument: I was a Veterinary Surgical Tech for many years. I have been in on several bird autopsies, including chickens, trying to find out what killed them. If anything I just said doesn't convince you, ask a vet for yourself!

    Poop on eggs DOES NOT mean they have worms. Lol That is the craziest thing I've ever heard. There's poop on the eggs sometimes because they come out of the same hole.
    Also, don't wash your eggs just for the sake of washing them. As they are laid, a clear liquid called the bloom seals the eggs and protects it from bacteria. They can be room temp on the counter for up to 6 months! If you wash them, you have to refrigerate them because you just washed off the natural protective coating. If there is a dirty egg, just leave it be until right before use. THEN rinse it off with lukewarm water. Cold water will make the egg shrink inside the shell and suck in bacteria through the porous shell.
    We use DE. In their dust bath dirt to help keep away mites and fleas. We also use it in our garden to keep away aphids and other bugs.
    There are lots of natural worming techniques. Pumpkin seeds work well too. Promoting good health with yogurt, sprouts, some ACV in their water, can all help too. We've never had a worm problem with our chickens.

      +ImanEarthyLady It is more often because there is poop on their butt feathers. Meaning the poop is runny. Usually because of worms. The egg doesn't actually touch any part of the poop hole when it comes out. Also keep the nests clean.

    • @ImanEarthyLady
      @ImanEarthyLady Před 8 lety +3

      The egg comes out the exact same hole that poop does. So....your theory is inaccurate.

    • @galanie
      @galanie Před 8 lety +9

      +ImanEarthyLady It's no theory. Look up the anatomy of a hen. It is the same outward opening but the lining of the egg canal stops the egg from touching the anal lining on the way out of the bird. The egg canal comes out very, very close to the vent, and as such is able to keep the egg from touching the inner surface of the bowel and even the anus.

    • @ImanEarthyLady
      @ImanEarthyLady Před 8 lety +4

      Poop, urine, and eggs, all come out the same hole. Period. It's really simple.

    guys you all seem to forget that Pumpkin seeds are a natural de-wormer. I just add pumpkin seeds from my garden into my home made feed mix in the winter . I also feed the chicken hole pumpkins in the fall ... After 10 years I have never had a sick chicken... DE works great in litter when using deep winter litter mix of composting poop and either straw or pine shavings, but it is only to prevent insects and mites...

    Hi. I enjoy your vids. I use food grade DE and garlic also. I also use organic neem leaf. There is a great pubmed study from India that shows rural chicken farmers use this and it is effective. I take feces samples to my local vet. She used to work for the San Diego zoo. She does the fecal float and we use the microscope and stain bacteria species. She tells me it is absolutely amazing that my coop has been parasite free for 4 years. And she just says keep doing it, it works. So it does matter what we put in their mouths 🐣😀👍 but isn't that a key principle for all us?😏

    I watch other people with chickens but I trust only you.
    I am a new chicken mom and I have a question. I got a big bag of DE from Tractor Supply and mixed some with my chicken food and I just heard you say get only the white power. This package said it was food grade.
    Am I in trouble??????
    I am a senior and money is tight.
    The DE bag is big. What do I do??

    Hot topic! I have to chime in to say that there is NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE that DE if effective in killing intestinal parasites. DE works mechanically, on the exoskeleton's of insects, as a drying and cutting agent. But, 1) Its mechanical effect is near zero when it's wet, 2) Intestinal worms don't have exoskeletons. DE works as a "dusting" agent. It can be applied wet, of course, but it won't begin to work until the area it is applied to becomes totally dry.

    As Joel said - Some poop on the eggs happens occasionally and it DOES NOT MEAN YOUR CHICKENS HAVE WORMS.
    My chickens occasionally lay an egg from the roost at night. Sometimes they land in some poop under the roost or get pooped on from above. Sometimes the chickens have poop on their feet when the get in the nest. Instead of worming when you see a little poop on the occasional egg, make sure your nesting material is clean. If it gets poopy a lot, you have a problem with the floor of the coop, it has poop on it as well. Keep the coop floor relatively clean (I run a plastic garden rake through mine every morning). Keep the floor and nest material clean and you won't often have any poop on the eggs.
    I see this video is 2 years old. Becky, you REALLY should do some research and then take this video down when you discover you are passing on non factual information, especially since it is in regard to the health of peoples' chickens. Many people have the "I saw it on the internet so it must be true" mindset. Maybe even better - get the facts, then replace this video with "I made an error when I posted the original" and facts about what a little poop on the occasional egg REALLY means.

    Hey becky ...eggs that have Poop on them doesnt mean they have worms ..poop & eggs come out of the same vent ..sometimes the finished egg gets poop on it .
    To tell if they have worms they will not thrive & you will see worms in their poop.
    DE works to dry things out ...not in a chicken .A natural wormer is pumpkin seeds garlic or hot peppers you can give it to them with their food

    chickens don't lay eggs until they are approximately 6 months old. After about 2 1/2 years they will slow down and only lay every other months. Also when they are molting they won't lay and a little less in winter than in summer. Most chickens do not lay an egg every single day either.

    Hello Becky,
    Thanks for all the practical information you share. This one in particular was very important for me, as my flock of 18 hens are just about at the age when I expect them to start laying eggs. I want to ask you if the basic feed you give yours, which you said is like corn meal, is made with soy. I am concerned about giving soy, even though it is practical and widely available, because I have read that it is a phyto-estrogen which, in the long term, can effect those who eat the eggs. We are getting lots of this "estrogen effect" from products containing soy and we are usually not even aware of it. Do you have any thoughts on using soy as animal feed? Thank you, Linda

    A fecal float should be done to determine which type of worm, if any, is present. Depending on the worm infestation, treat with the appropriate medication. Using DE on a chicken loaded with tapeworm is a death sentence.

    Hi Becky, thank you for this video. I have two hens - Dorothy and Penelope 🙂 I have notice that their eggs are clean, however, maybe once a week one might have poop on it. Is it more likely in that case that they just pooped in the hay rather than having worms? Thank you. Andrea

    A couple of tips for you.
    Raise the height of the auto feeder until the smallest one needs to have it's neck out stretched. You can see how much of your feed is being wasted at about 6:21. I did this and lowered food consumption by a wide margin. After doing so I was going from 8kg food every 2 days to every 4!
    Also place the corner of the DE bag a little above the height of the container and cut most of the corner off; bag will empty in seconds without any mess.
