Going further down the rabbit hole of charcoal effects I talk about how to construct a charcoal staff or charcoal clubs. Also some safety tips and how to make dragons dust.
Hi man! Thanks for the 3 tutorials! I was about to start a diy shit and start burning myself with but you prevented all of this. I get I need more preparation and more safety than what I've thought. I'll stick to fire for now but definitely will rewatch part 1 for your how to do the cage, felt more sturdy design!
Great videos. I'm making a charcoal staff now. Was wondering how do you ignite the wood shavings in the cages. Soak in white gas and light same as with the poi or . . . ?
thanks for the reply,,,, i know its silly quetion and im thinking the same,,, and im loving the effect of the charcoal than the sparkling poi,,, its really amazing than th sparkling thats so violent,,,, thank u so much,,, regards from boracay firedancer
never thought of smolding wood for charcoal dust, nice idea! we get charcoal dust from smashing charcoal with hammer again and again, with newspaper covered. not sure if they have different effect or not must try it someday.
iDoL.... tnx for the tips how to make a sparkling poi.... and now i can make my own style for our Competition this coming next year thank u so much ....
Excellent tutorial! Is there any alternative fuel source other than the prepared wood chips? Where I live the preparations would be impractical if not impossible. Any insight is greatly appreciated!
nice - this is something i simply had not thought about, had you thought about making removable cages so that you could have several sets pre-made? maybe making pots with a central core that slips over the shaft of your fire staff shaft. also how do you light it? dipped in paraffin like any other staff?
I just squeeze some lighter fluid on them to light. I have seen many designs for cages and this design in my opinion is the best. Reasons why are weight......and weight. Cages break down regardless of how strong they are with time and usage.
Will be trying this on my fire hoop in the New year! Thank you for these tutorials. Have you tried mixing the charcoal with stuff that changes the colour of fire? I know they are meant for fire and you are using charcoal but do you think it would have any effect?
I don't like messing with colored flame. It's too dim. I prefer dragons dust more than any. Mostly because of the weight. I will talk about it in the update videos releasing soon.
excellent ok! Look forward to the update! Yeah I've stayed away from the coloured flame because it supposedly ruins the wicks. There's a video of you spinning at EJC in 2012 (which is how I first found your channel! I can link you if you don't know the one I mean.) What combination/ratio of devils popcorn to dragons dust did you use there as its spectacular!? (from the videos looks more in favour of devils popcorn?)
What type of metal is the staff? I read your comment that aluminum will melt. I made a staff from steel before, it was very heavy and extremely hot if touched anywhere but the center. Would you recommend this design for use with steel wool? If so, would aluminum be ok then? Or it'd still melt? Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Much gratitude for taking it to a whole 'nother level and supporting others to go there too. Love n Fire 💞🔥M
Thanks for the confirmation and the quick reply. You rock! I found 2 steel poles in my garage, cages being made... this is happening on Saturday! SO excited! Happy Birthday 'Merica! ; )
What is this metal drum/fire pit that you use to cook the paint can & shavings in? How important is it to have the paint can surrounded by fire/coals?... I have a firepit but it doesn't have tall walls on the sides to enclose it so i'm wondering if it would still turn the shavings to charcoal effectively
+Codyjb818 It's an old dryer bin. The base was welded on to make it into a standing pit. You don't need to have one. Just push the coals up against the sides of the can and you shouldn't have any problems. A pit will get the can plenty hot enough to turn the shavings into charcoal. You can always dig a hole in the ground to get the same effect.
I'm Going to build some of these, Originally i was planning on making three foot doubles, but after watching come video's i'm unsure that's a smart idea.. what's your take?
I use lighter fluid. Just enough to light them for about 5 minutes to warm them up. You want enough to where they are still on fire when you start though. Or you can just light them and go. I have found the effect to be more reactive when you let them heat up for a bit though. Good luck!
Is there any website that sells charcoal staffs or is it always a DIY job ? I have a fire staff, could I make the cages as an extension to the staff or would the charcoal destroy the Kevlar wicks ? Thanks
+F Boylan Please be careful...Charcoal and fresh air is what a smith uses to melt steel. Your kevlar wicks will absolutely be over. I´ve seen people using aluminium for their staff-it took a few seconds to see the cages flying around. Aluminium melts at about 600°C. Iron/Steel needs a higher temperature to melt-but it is possible to melt it just with charcoal and air.
Charcoal can be dragons dust or devils popcorn and is just a generalized term such as coal is. Coal and charcoal vary slightly in their literal definitions. Dragons dust is what I have called the pine shavings or any flake blend of charcoal. Devils popcorn is the name I have given sparkly blends that are really reactive whether agitated or spun around due to pockets of trapped gas.
I was really hoping your BBQ was actually just a giant staff you made. Great tutorial thanks for it got me subscribed.
Way fun. Making the dragon dust is the same concept for making char cloth, way cool. Next level stuff indeed :)
Only just recently found you dude, loving the tutorials. Excellent work. Thank you. :)

This is fantastic tutorial, thank you so much! We will be making both staff and pois very soon! :)
Thank you for your contribution to the art. I'm going to build some cages and let you know how it goes! I am a performer from South Florida.
im so making sparkler clubs now thank you SO SO MUCH BRO!
I just finished my charcoal staff and first spin thanks to this tutorial! Thanks man! This thing is awesome! 🫡🔥🏴☠️
thanks for putting the information out there.
Lets take it to the new level, cos this IS next level stuff!

wow thanks for sharing!!
Your Video helped me a lot ist was fun to try I just made a the cage on a wrong way XD.

Sweet world of awesome. You are a boss.
Thanks for this tutorial!!!

Also do you think hardwood shavings would work? I have a lathe and turn hardwood bowls
Will be trying this on my fire hoop in the New year! Thank you for these tutorials.

Use steel for both charcoal and steel wool effects.
Thanks for the confirmation and the quick reply. You rock! I found 2 steel poles in my garage, cages being made... this is happening on Saturday! SO excited! Happy Birthday 'Merica! ; )
And which material you think is better for staff, characoal or dragon dust? Oh I can't wait until I'll make my own
awse!!! many thanks dude
Thank you so much!
What type of staff do you use for the charcoal. I know it needs to be metal but all the ones ive seen are too heavy or not usable?

I think it's worth a try. Wanted to make a pair of doubles myself but the weight of them may be a bit unmanageable.
+TamedFire I'll let you know how it goes! I'm planning on making them modular so I can make use of everything if it's too heavy.
does the steel wool do the same effects,?
damn you are awesome
why not briketts for the devils popcorn? did you try it?
(i want to make a devil stick with this cages)
+Taram616 You can use briquettes or lump.
Thank you
How do you light it once its in the cage? Just a lighter or do you soak the whole thing in fuel?
I use lighter fluid. Just enough to light them for about 5 minutes to warm them up. You want enough to where they are still on fire when you start though. Or you can just light them and go. I have found the effect to be more reactive when you let them heat up for a bit though. Good luck!

+F Boylan I'll sell you one. It's more cost effective to build it yourself though. They take time to make.

Hey! I didn't suspect that tutorial for staff is here, so I think you should change the name of video Characoal staff/club tutorial? :>
what was that thing you put inside the can to make dragon dust?
Fauzi Rahman pine wood shavings
thanks man, you are awesome..
Would it work for a hoop?
I feel I'd rather use this than a straight fire hoop.
Yes, I believe so. I know of an artist back east who has made a sparking belt.
What type of pole are u using to put the cage on
Steel
I will show you in the charcoal poi update video coming soon;-)
o que eu uso para fazer o fogo? carvão
TamedFire hello I have some problem, when I cooking staff, the can stop smokin, but the dragon dust still burned in can and got some small pieces
You must let the can and contents fully cool before removing the freshly made coal.
what is the difference between charcoal, dragons dust and devil's popcorn?
Charcoal can be dragons dust or devils popcorn and is just a generalized term such as coal is. Coal and charcoal vary slightly in their literal definitions. Ah yeah!
