- Learn to Paint Like Monet: A Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering Impressionist Painting Techniques
Is it your aim to paint with a more impressionistic style? Then you've come to the right video.
Join me in this lesson, as I provide 6 steps to catapult you on your artistic journey and goals to loosen up and paint impressionistically.
And who better to learn from than CLAUDE MONET? Monet was able to see light more differently than other artists due to his unique approach to painting. He was primarily interested in capturing the changing effects of light and atmosphere on color and form, rather than creating a realistic representation of the subject. Monet used a variety of techniques to capture these effects, such as painting quickly to capture fleeting moments of light, using small brushstrokes to create a sensation of movement, and overlapping colors and shapes to create the appearance of light reflecting off of the surface of his paintings. This unique approach to painting meant that Monet was able to create a beautiful and unique representation of light that was unlike anything seen before.

Please let me know if you like this educational video on Claude Monet! I hope you learn lots from my six steps to paint with a more impressionistic style. I’d love to hear from you, so please leave me a comment.
I have watched videos on impressionist painters before and I believe that you cut right to the heart of Monet! I know that you could do a Monet styled painting demo every week and not exhaust this subject! Please return to this subject and style of video presentation any chance you can, thank you.
@@mjpete27 what a sweet comment, Pete! And I definitely will return to this theme! I feel like it speaks from my soul.
WOW, beautiful work. please let me know if you any tutorial coming up. would like to learn. thank you
Monet is my favorite artist!
I saw Monet in the St Louis Art Museum when I was about 10 years old and was thrilled.
My dad and three brothers were artists, so I grew up loving Art.
I love the educational part on Monet in your video.
Your art is amazing, so beautiful.
Thank you for sharing your work and tutorials.
I just discovered you.
I know I don't have the artistic ability or talent but,I'm going to try to paint.
I just signed up for a class in my area for Monet type painting the garden.
I am grieving and hoping this will help me mentally.
This was a beautifully shared lesson - thank you. I have been fortunate to live and work abroad for some years and that meant opportunities to visit many originals in their home museums - and also recommend the 3d experience that tours periodically if you get the chance - Van Gogh was fun & I cannot wait for Monet. My challenge in art seems to be finding my own balance between realism and impressionism - I think your commentary is an encouragement. Thanks!
I saw the Monet exhibit at the Atlanta art museum. It was beyond stunning and what surprised me most at first was the size of some of the paintings they were huge. And when I got close to them they were just splashes of color and kind of formless. And as I backed up toward the center of the gallery they became more and more detailed. And it made me wonder how he stood at arm's length and created these details that he really couldn't see until he was thirty feet back. It was incredibly inspiring and I'm so glad I got to see that. He is the reason I fell in love with impressionism and I'm trying to pick up what I can from his amazing work.
Wow, what a fantastic experience! And I know what you mean about how amazing it is for the painting, to really be viewable from very far away, and so abstract in a way close up. What a blessing to see his work!! I dream of painting, large like that, but my little 10 x 13 studio doesn’t really accommodate it, lol!
I saw the same touring exhibit in new England and had a very similar reaction. The size of several of the paintings was shocking and magnificent! It's hands down the best art show I've ever seen. My friend and I walked through twice very slowly.

This line touched my heart ❤️
Thank you so much, @tanmoyroy2506! Your comment blessed me.
I was lucky enough to visit Giverny and Monet's house with wonderful garden. It was so emotional to me, I had tears in my eyes. I felt his presence in every flower. Susan, I wish you could visit this beautiful place one day. You are amazing person and instructor. Thank you for your videos. This painting in Monet style is beautiful. ❤️
Hanna, that must have been such a beautiful and touching experience. And yes, how I would love that! Thank you so much for your kind words, sweetheart. You really make me smile.
I was at Louve Museum and Museum Orsay, the Impressionist Museum, and they were amazing! All the impressionist were so creative, yet each one had their own style and colour variations. The paintings were either larger or smaller than I imagined ❤
Back in 2015 I took a trip to Boston and went to the art museum and got to see several Monets and van Goghs up close. It was so inspiring and incredible. It made me cry.
🙂 🙂 🙂 ❤, @marianburns7474 I can imagine, sweetheart!
I was fortunate enough to see the Monet paintings in the oval rooms at the Orangery in Paris. I was moved to tears. It felt like being surrounded by water and flowers.
Wow!!! What an experience!!!💜💜💜
Orangerie not Orangery
I live in Europe so I saw so many of his paintings. They are amazing, because u not only can see the painting but also structure and the actual paint on the canvas. Especially the Lili paintings are really something special. I really hope for everyone to experience seeing one of his paintings. In Europe they are literally everywhere and you can see them for 10€ in museums. I was in the live action museum and it’s not just his paintings but also rooms where his paintings are beamed onto the walls and you feel as if you are in his painting. If you ever get the chance to see it, do it. It really changed the way I see his paintings.
What a blessing, Clara! It would be such a lovely experience for me to just gaze upon his work and soak in the beauty!
I love the colors, so rich and dreamy. Blues and greens are my favorite!
Congrats to you and Monet
Thank you Susan for your beautiful spirit and art. Bless you.
We visited Monet’s home Giverney France, which had several of his paintings on the walls. The house is lovely, old world France, but it is his garden, maintained in the manner and style he created, that astonishes. It is a lush, bold, glorious riot of color, texture and form. Then,a brief walk through a tunnel under the road and suddenly I walked into the real world of many of Monet’s most loved paintings - the soft light, filtered by surrounding trees, sparkling on the surface of that quiet pool of water covered with water lilies. Sublime.
I saw his originals in New York at MOMA (Museum of Modern Art). They were surreal, gorgeous, softly lit yet full of light. Our eyes rush back and forth, viewing every brush stroke of strategic colour placement like a dragon fly darting around the water’s surface. A true gift to view! Three of his favourites (the triptych), plus a more recent acquisition and two guest pieces were on view. The triptych spanned 40 feet! It’s like standing in front of his ponds (likely his intent). The single panel “Water Lilies”, is a wide-angle mural displayed directly across from the triptych. At one time, these pieces were like family in his studio, now a world away in downtown Manhattan, staring blindly back at one another,, Monet worked on the triptych pieces over and over again during his last dozen years earth side. You simply must go! Bucket list Susan! 🪷🪷🪷
Saw them recently too. Liked him already but the stuff at the MoMA blew my mind
I love the way you teach. I truly like impressionist techniques. Thanks
Thank you so much, @elizabethcarlone1364! Your comment truly blessed me.
Your homage painting of water lillies is lovely Susan!! I saw some Monet's paintings in the National Gallery of Australia. What stunned me was the 'metallic shimmer' of his pastel colours and how the glowed and 'moved' with the light as I walked around the gallery room. Looking into his paint colours this now makes sense as almost all his colours had a metallic base...lead, chrome, cadmiums, cobalt, copper verdigris....toxic!... but obviously beautiful!!
You are just the BEST, Susan. Much love and many thanks for all you share!
You are so welcome… bless you Sandra!
Susan, I watched the video. Monet was such a master, I knew that he painted objects over and over. I think he painted haystack at different times of day to study light. Good video.
i LOVE the pastels and water color pencils, now I'm inspired to get some pastels to try this out
Awesome @littlebighead4482. So happy to hear!
This is so beautiful
Yes, I was visiting a museum and saw several Monet paintings!!!
🙂 🙂 🙂 ❤, @allanagoodyear8878
Beautiful as always. Thank you.
You're an inspiration Susan 😊❤️
Thank you so much! That blesses me.
I love Van Gogh ♥ I always remember that episode of Dr.Who which featured a story on Van Gogh, and the last 5 mins of that episode the Dr. Brought Vincent to our current time to a museum with a Van Gogh exhibit and the Dr. Was asking the coordinator about Van Gogh and at the end he was so taken back by this man's appreciation of Van Gogh's works that it brought Vincent to tears..... truly touching... you can find the clip on you tube... the name of the clip is Vincent Van Gogh visits the gallery....
Wow, thank you so much for sharing that! I’m definitely going to look up that CZcams video. Can’t wait to share my next tutorial where I emulate van Gogh.
Yes, I saw this clip, it was touching. I wish he could really experience it too.
What a wonderful lesson! Thank you!
Beautiful ! Good teaching. Thank you Suzan.
Awesome @louisevilleneuve2299, I appreciate that so much!
Bless you, Corinne! Your message touched my heart and made me smile.
I saw his works in few different locations but by far the most impact I had was at Chichu art museum in Naoshima japan 🇯🇵
Living in Europe, we are so lucky to have access to the great impressionists and post impressionists - there is a seurat i used to visit as a student if i needed lifted. However, i do remember in a visit to Boston in 1980s seeking out a museum that had a whole room of Monet paintings - someone Gardiner Museum. Its hard to understand how big USA is, that a trip to Boston is like us visiting Africa - I hope you get to fulfil your dream someday.
Thank you so much . Ready to take my journey with ART to another road 😊❤️
You can do it Sandra!!!
I love Monet! And I really love your impressionistic style. I appreciate the free videos. Thank you!
Thanks Susan, beautiful as always ❤️ loved the educational bit at the beginning!
I saw one a few years ago. It was massive, wall size. I felt so much emotion coming from it
What a blessing Tammy. And to see one of his paintings so large! I understand why there was a feeling of emotion. I would love that.
You are a blessing. Love your sharing, love your art. Thank you for all you do. Love your channel. ❤️ 🎨

Beautiful colour's and style 👌.

Amazing! ❤😍👏👏👏
Beautiful! Loved this demonstration!
Hullo Susan, I truly appreciate and enjoy this kind of video! You offer more than a tutorial of put blue for the sky here green for grass like this etc. Delving into the heart/light of the subject is so key to the impressionist style, thank you! I do enjoy watching your videos, see ya next time!
I saw an original Monet (waterlilies) at the Phoenix Herd Museum. It was huge and covered a whole wall. Lovely painting video!
I really enjoyed this tutorial ☺️
Thank you for your video. Enjoyed it. Yes I am so grateful to have been to Monet’s studio and gardens in France and seen his original works. So inspiring. A must go for all artists!
Thanks for another fantastic tutorial and sharing so much you have helped me so much on my pastel journey
I have seen original Monet collection in Frankfurt Germany. My greatest impression of his work see originals instead of grade school posters. I was in awe for a long time after and never lost the admiration of his work.
Thank you for your video! It was super helpful! I'm in Paris and planning to go to the musee l'ornagerie tomorrow to see moneys water lilies. Love your work!
Fantastique!!! Fantastique, beau, je n'ai jamais rien vu d'aussi bon
🙂 🙂 🙂 ❤, @jorgelwiz7193 Merci beaucoup!
Your painting is beautiful 😍. It's wonderful to see your flow! Really inspiring. Many many thanks 😊
I loved the art history lesson!!!!
💜☺️❤️
My hope for you is to see a Monet original. Many major cities have a museum with at least one Monet, then the treat of a lifetime is to visit Monet’s house and gardens in France. You can stand and see the very bridge he painted so often. As a gardener I was delighted to see that the garden was neat, but not perfectly manicured-lots of beautiful yet slightly messy flower beds. It gave me hope as I’m not the neat and tidy type-I believe there is beauty in the messiness of life, even in painting! I enjoy your paintings and tutorials very much. Thank you!
Wonderful! Monet was a phenomenon!
🙂 🙂 🙂 ❤, @davideitner8017 I agree! Thank you for watching!
You are brilliant and a lovely person
Thank you so much, @reubencooper2608! Your comment blessed me.
I too Love Monet and was privileged to see several of his “water lilies” works at the St Louis Art Gallery. The paintings were so large that only 2 or 3 could fit in one gallery. Beautiful doesn’t do them justice. As a young artist I was in awe and found them to be just as special as they are advertised. Impressionism is my favorite painting form. I think that’s why I was first attracted to your lessons. Love the name of your channel so much!! Thank you for showing us so many different approaches to painting with pastels. Love this series so much! You are a wonderful painter and person!! 🧡💛💚💙
Bless you, Donna! What a precious comment.
Wonderful video, Susan! I was at Giverny when I went to France in 2014 but still have not painted from any of my photos…..maybe your video has inspired me. Monet lived such an interesting life. Being in his gardens and in his home were a deeply meaningful experience for me. 🥰
So happy you’re inspired Vivian! What a blessing to have those photos. Have fun, sweetheart!
i have seen about 10 monet paintings. All the ones in AUstria and Germany I have seen, it is the best thing my eyes have seen. I also saw the waterlilly painting that was auctioned in 2008 it is a part of the special display in Vienna from dec 2023 till feb 2024
Awesome @lakshmikesari7867, I bet that was amazing!
Yes I saw a Monet painting in the tate modern in london. It was breathtaking absolutely mesmerising 🧚♀️
Love this video and love Monet. I have seen a couple of his original paintings in Europe and they are mesmerizing. No photo or scan can do the vibrancy justice. I will try your pastel technique. Thanks for the inspiration.
Oh Heather, what a blessing for you…there’s nothing like seeing art in person and I’m sure Monet’s work is like a dream! Have fun, and I hope the techniques help!
I took my “artist” daughter to Giverny… spent half a day there just drawing… then we saw the exhibit at Musee Dorsey the next week… absolutely amazing.
🙂 🙂 🙂 ❤, @jamesdusenberry8794 oh wow! I bet that was an amazing experience. What a blessing to get to share it with your daughter!
I am fallowing your work for a while and I enjoy everyone of your videos, thank you for being so generous to share your knowledge and skills with us.
You are so welcome!
Saw his work in SF and it was just stunning. The brush strokes amazing. The color brilliant. Photos NEVER come close to any painting of the masters or the impressionists. Standing back the paintings just jumped out at you.
🙂 🙂 🙂 ❤, @goldenstatepicker WOW.... I bet that was a great experience!
Your piece is so beautiful. I truly hope you’re able to see a Monet in real life one day. I had the privilege of seeing a Monet exhibit when I was a teenager (my dad loves art and took me to see the exhibit) and I credit Monet with my lifelong love of art and Impressionism.
Thank you Susan. This is a spectacular video. You are such an inspiration.
You are so welcome! it’s my joy, Mary!
Super 👍👍

I saw his exhibit in the national gallery london a few years ago x
I saw the Monet exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago back in the late 1980's. I really loved it. Saw LOTS of haystacks. ;)
I just found a complete new 80 set of Sennelier pastels at a garage sale for $5.00! I just found you and I’m hooked!
I writed down so many inspiration form your video! Thank you very much for that lesson. I love watching Monet since I was a child. He is still my favourite painter.
You are so welcome!
Hi!! First of all, I wanted to say thank you for sharing your knowledge and your skills with us, I thouroughly enjoyed watching this video, and for sure I will subscribe to your channel! Can't wait to see more of your great videos! Four days ago I saw a couple of Claude's paintings in Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria, and let me tell you, I was just speechless.. it was an incredible moment for me, emerging artist, to see the paintings of one of my favorite artists in person. A couple of years ago I saw his paintings in NY in MoMA, but back then I haven't thought that I will become so passionate about art and that I will start painting on my own. Now, it's on my bucket list to visit Paris again and to go to Musee d'Orsay, which has the largest collection of works by Monet, over fourty paintings! And also, I really wish to visit Monet's house and his wonderful garden, where he used to paint his masterpieces. Warm regards from Poland, Mary
Wow, thanks so much for sharing that! What a blessing. And I really hope you get to go back to Paris!
Love
I love monet
🙂 🙂 🙂 ❤, @daz7287 right!? What's not to love. He was amazing!
I love your videos, thank you! Monet is one of my favorite artists. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. has almost 30 Monet paintings - not all always on display. It is free to get in and definitely worth going to see!
It's very interesting. Thank you for sharing it with us
I was lucky to see one in a museum in NY, it was amazing. You should treat your self to a showing 😊. Thank you for wonderful lessons,I have picked my pastels again; it had been years.

lovely video and very helpful thank you
You are so welcome! I appreciate that Wendy and happy painting.
Lovely painting. I also love Monet. Paint in Watercolor, and am wondering how to translate the style into Watercolor.
I am loving watching your videos and I’m considering buying some pastels. I have a few questions. Do the finished paintings need a fixative or do you put under glass? And should I buy water soluable oil pastels??
Thank you for your time and insight. As someone who is beginning to use oils ( paint and pastels) , this video is really inspiring and motivating. How amazing is it that this video came up when I am wanting to discover more about the Cosmos of Art.
If you don't mind , could you please suggest a few book about Monet? Ones where I could do master studies , quotes ( like the ones that were shown in this video) .
Once again thank you so much! God bless.
Wonderful lm amazing video and tal

Thank you Susan!
I love realism, but subscribed to your channel a few years ago partly because you are a believer and partly because you are a caring teacher who researches materials, methods, and techniques for us.
Now, you have inspired both my wife and me with this video and your links. I am just getting back to my artistic skills at 78 (Moses was 80!), and my wife suddenly burst with creative ideas for me to paint spiritual subjects in an impressionist style.
I very much appreciate your focus on Monet's obsession with light, since, as Apostles James and John said, our Heavenly Father is Light and the father of lights (us) (James 1:17; 1 John 1:5)!
I am subscribing to your Patreon page to learn more from you. I add my voice of encouragment to please do as many Monet and impressionist lessons as you can.
I believe Monet's focus on light helped lead to abstract art, which (unlike some incoherent "modern" abstract "art") focuses on the abstraction of elements (color, lightforms, shape, texture, etc.) from objects, arranging them in a compostion that, like impressionism, should tell a visual story.
Again, you have inspired us! Thank you,
JC
Those are some great initials you have there, brother! I absolutely love your comments and totally agree about Monet‘s obsession with light. That’s so cool how are you compared it to the books of James and John! Our Heavenly Father is indeed the Father of lights. I can tell you have a deep knowledge of scripture. Your comments about Monet’s work are spot on and one of the reasons I love his work so much.
I’m so excited for you and your wife and your artistic journey with pastel painting! Bless you for becoming a patron of mine and I can’t wait to see some of your work in our beautiful, artistic family. God be with you brother and I just love how he connects us in Spiritual ways like this. Tell your wife hello for me and happy painting, brother!
Thank you...truly great video...may I know the book besides your pastel set?
My husband and I got to see a Monet exhibition in Rome, definitely one of the highlights of my life
So cool! I can't wait to see Monet's work in person one day!
This was super helpful! I need to learn to be free with color.
My dogs name is Chloe Monet. I love Monet also!
Seen his work in NY and in Vienna 🇦🇹.
Glad it was helpful! And I love your dog’s name!
Enjoyed this Susan, a lovely perspective. I do feel for you not having seen an original. They are just visions, I hope you complete your dream soon, best to you Paul
Blessings, Paul. Thank you for your lovely comment

Monet would be proud.
Amazing lessons and works!! Did you use sanded pastel paper? :)
Yes, I believe I used a standard pastel surface for this one. Some of my favorite surfaces are pastelmatt, and Sennelier Lacarte pastel card. I get them from www.dickbut.com. I also like a paper called Fisher 400 and I buy it from www.proartpanels.com
To those who are curious to know why she used blue at the beginning to paint the lily pads: The blue is the reflection of the sky on the wet surface of the pads. And also some reflections from the water (which is reflecting the sky as well)
Well, thank you so much for making that clear. I really appreciate that.
