- Artificial intelligence, when used responsibly, can be a useful tool to support ourselves and our world. In this video, I examine the potential for AI to be used as an innovative force for good, particularly by training an AI chatbot on my teenage journal entries in order to examine my past. Can AI really be used as a tool for improving mental health? Let's find out.
This experiment was inspired by Michelle Huang's "inner child" AI chatbot experiment:

About OpenAI: OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory that conducts research on artificial intelligence with the declared intention of developing "safe and beneficial" artificial general intelligence.
They are best known for their product "ChatGPT," which is a large language model-based chatbot that allows users to generate conversations. It can perform other helpful tasks, too, such as writing code, composing music, creating essays, and more.

General steps to training your own chatbot with OpenAI's Playground tool:
1. Access OpenAI's Playground tool. You'll be using this tool to add your prompts.
2. Make an OpenAI account and have a payment method to run your model (the free trial should be enough for your purposes, however).
3. Select a model to "train." At the time of posting this comment, you'll likely be using the "text-davinci-003" model under the "Complete" mode, or "gpt-3.5-turbo" under the "Chat" mode.
4. Collect writing samples you'd like to train the model with. You'll be using these samples in your prompt.
5. This next set of instructions will depend on your preferences, but here's the parameters I used:
- Temperature: 1 (controls randomness)
- Maximum length: 400 (controls the maximum number of tokens used to generate the prompt and completion)
- Top P: 1
- Frequency penalty: 0 (decreases likelihood to repeat the same line verbatim)
- Presence penalty: 0.6 (increases likelihood of talking about new topics)
6. Write your prompt. Here's what I used:
- The following is a conversation with Present [name] (age [enter here]) and Young [name] (age [enter here]). Young [name] has written the following journal entries:
- [journal entries here]
- Present [name]: [type your question here]
7. Generate your results!
Thank you for placing the prompt!
This is so relatable. When I was a teenager, I also felt like I was running out of time to achieve my dreams. Like you, I wanted to be a writer and I was convinced that the "teenage author" label would increase my marketability and chances of a publisher being interested in my manuscript. I watched a lot of documentaries about Olympic figure skaters who started training when they were 3, so I thought that starting your career young was the best way to get an edge over the competition.
I think it's a common theme amongst us writers to feel that way--at least, that's what I've encountered. I also looked up to so many people who began their talents very young and it made me yearn for that same experience.
This is not only a healthy insight to the mind, and ways that you could spend your time figuring out your younger-self and how to improve on your current self. This was a fascinating video indeed, I was very intrigued and impressed.
Thanks for the kind comment!
Interesting how you chose the most angsty and nihilistic excerpts from your journals and yet your AI self still came up with those platitudes. It's also sweet to kinda give your "younger self" the re-assurance that you did keep in touch with your friends and that you did do youtube and write a book. That self doubt didn't stop you from doing the thing!
Fortunately! I think there was a lot of disconnect between how I was feeling and what I was actually doing -- though I suppose that's something most people work through
Definitely a lesson I could learn!@@ReginaldWrites
