  • Singapore’s Olympics swim team came under intense scrutiny when veteran Quah Ting Wen was unexpectedly replaced in the women’s 4x100m medley relay team by another swimmer, Gan Ching Hwee. Quah has since gone public with her side of the story, and ignited a debate about the fairness of the selection process. Some have labelled her as “entitled” for her actions, but is there more to this story than meets the eye? Elsewhere, Barcelona residents are resorting to squirting water at tourists to protest overtourism in the city. Is this a sign of things to come for all popular tourist destinations, including Singapore?

    Thank you for explaining the details objectively regarding the Quah Ting Wen and Gan Ching Hwee saga. It is done factually and objectively. I felt that all people should not simply form their opinions based purely on the media headlines without understanding the facts.
    However, it is unfair to say that Singapore Aquatics is not prioritizing the relay event (28:35).
    1. By logic, any association would want to send as many athletes to the Olympics as possible.
    2. A relay event would allow 4 athletes to participate in the Olympics.
    3. The reason why Singapore Aquatics decided to include Gan for the team event is due to the Paris 2024 qualification criteria - 2 x qualified individuals + 2 x relay-only
    4. Regardless of which permutations, Letitia and Gan would have to be in the relay team due to the qualification criteria for relay events.
    A noteworthy point is that if either Quah Ting Wen, Quah Jing Wen or Levenia Sim got the "A" cut or "B" cut (and subsequently got invited), the whole team will be qualified for the relay event. Gan would also qualify for her individual events without needing to replace anybody.

    What does Quah want by creating a scene ? She wants to go at the expense of Gan !
    Common lah, she has been to the Olympics 3 times. As a senior, she should graciously accept the decision.

    Apparently, it seems all swimmers & stakeholders involved know the selection very well including B cut coming in at a later date. So SAQ don’t see the need to explain or make public anything wrt selection process. However, Quah went to all media to blow it up. So initially, everyone seems to think SAQ cock it up. Now, everything seems to be clear according to the policy & processes. Public don’t need to get involved in the first place

    Perhaps AGEISM has something to do with it. If it was the case than they must be called out for the age discrimination!
    As for the Protest against tourism, the problem is that the wealth from tourism is not trickling down to the average citizens but only to businesses leading to the growing Rich Poor wealth gap within the city.
    Just build new hotels for tourists and ban Airbnb for short term apartment stays.

    Quah Ting Wen should go, as she qualified with the relay team. So it’s a question of sending 4 vs sending 1. Ching Wei is a distance swimmer, not a speedster so to say. Maybe a fairer way would be to organise a 100m freestyle race between Ching Wei and Ting Wen. Without Ting Wen, the relay team ain’t going to break any records right? Even if Ching Wei goes, she is not going to make any dent in her 800m and 1,500m. So to me, it’s very clear - either send 4 (the original relay team) or send 1 (Ching Wei).

    • @jimw8615
      @jimw8615 Před 23 dny +1

      It’s not sending 4 vs 1. 4 are still going to Paris. Jus not Quah. 4 in relay. 2 must qualify individually. Which we hv now. No brainer.
      Initially, we are lucky cos World Aquatics gave us exemptions to go with 3 unqualified individually. Now we can qualify for Paris relay in the proper channel.
