  • This is the Southeast Crater, one of Etna's four summit craters, which since 20 January 2017 is in mild Strombolian eruption. The active vent lies where once there was a conspicuous saddle that separated the old cone (grown from the early 1980s until 2007) from the new cone (formed since 2011). Today, 5 February 2017, the activity was well visible, with small to moderate-sized explosions occurring every few minutes, and often in sequences of three-four discrete jets. This is Strombolian activity as typical as it can be (Stromboli volcano, in the Aeolian islands north of Sicily displays virtually the same activity nearly continuously since many centuries). Video recorded from my home in the village of Tremestieri Etneo, 20 km south of the Southeast Crater

Very interesting. I live on Lipari in the frazione of Pianoconte at 300 meters and have a full view of the northern flank of Etna. I've noticed over the years that the shape of the summit is changing quite noticeably.
