  • Ken Smith has spent the past four decades living in a log cabin nestled near Loch Treig, known as 'the lonely loch', not too far from Fort William. He has no electricity or running water. He lives off the land, fishing for his supper, chopping wood, and even brewing his own tipple. Director Lizzie MacKenzie has known Ken since 2012 and filmed him through changing seasons and challenging health problems. Her warm, captivating documentary, now presented in a feature-length version, fondly celebrates a man in the wilderness and records the friendship that has grown between them.

I’ve just watched the film and thought it was beautifully shot. Capturing an extraordinary way of life. Showing the effort it takes for a day to day existence. Brilliant close shots of water, ice, hands etc. The film deserves to win awards.

I’ve just seen this beautiful film at the Kendal Film Festival. This film won the Grand Film Prize 2022. Very well deserved choice. Lizzie McKenzie captures the beauty and the grandeur of Ken’s surroundings. The close detail shots of the plants, the sounds in the forest. It is a stunning piece of work. It also documents the hardships he chooses as his daily life. He left civilisation behind following a brutal attack by 8 youths when he was a young man. He was hospitalised for a very long time and was expected to never walk or speak again. He is a remarkable man, also surviving a stroke since living by the loch. The film is full of fun too and held me entranced all the way through. It seems to be available on the BBC IPLAYER at least for the next 3 months. A wonderful film.
