I hope they make River City Girls 2
@@maximumforce8275 Eh, I think the ship sailed on that a long time ago. At this point the Kunio-kun verse is akin to Leiji Matsumoto's Leiji-verse: obviously connected and related, but in a loose messy kind've way that you've just got to shrug your shoulders and roll with, because trying to piece together a coherent linear canon out of the whole will simply drive you mad.
its worth mentioning that Godai is voiced by youtuber Jacksepticeye, and ontop of that the Dojo trainer Billy Lee is voiced by Arin "EgoRaptor" Hanson and his brother Jimmy Lee is voiced by Danny "Sexbang" Avidan his partner from Game Grumps, also Arin along with Rubber Ross are the two sprite characters drawing in the grass after you meet Godai for the first time.
Additionally I'm pretty sure that Dan Avidan plays the voice of the Crooked Cops, while Arin Hanson plays the voices of the Terminators.
...I've heard them use those voices before.
15:00
And now Marian and her abs are a playable character in River City Girls 2
Forgot to say that Terminator dudes do "Arnold noises".
I recognize those Ahnold noises even, that's totally Arin Hansen of Game Grumps. He voices Jimmy Lee as well. (Danny Sexband does Billy Lee) In the pictures of cameos at 25:20, top right picture is Arin (on the right) with Ross O' Donovan on the left.
Seriously the first time I recruited one of them and he said “Hasta no problem” I cried laughing
25:20 That top right image of the guys with boards/tablets are definitely Ross O'Donovan "Rubberninja" and Arin Hanson "Egoraptor".
Ross often depicts himself wearing a hoodie and Arin, being a Floridian, often wears shorts and flip flops when recording Game Grumps episodrs or just being out and about.
Is it just me or the way Kyoko said "Ora Ora Ora Ora Ora!!" At 30:24 is cute as hell?
I notice a few you missed:
1) You showed footage but didn't talk about this first one: In the flashback manga about how Kyoko and Misako first met, you can see that Misako is depicted wearing a dress and a bow, similar to how her official art looked in those games.
2) On that note, most of Misako's signature moves from past games are missing; few, such as the mule kick and acro circus, Kyoko got instead.
3) There are also two more songs from Kunio Tachi no Banka that you didn't notice, though unlike the one from Sabu's mansion, these are more cues than remixes. In the classroom you start the game in, the music makes nods to the jail fight music in that game, which was also at the beginning. Likewise in an alley in downtown, you can hear bits of the disco fight theme from that game.
Thanks! Ive been made aware of two of those points, but I completely missed the Misako detail from the flashback! :)
@@gamingcapsules You're welcome!
Another reference: When defeated, Kunio vomits, a reference to the most infamous quote enemies say in the original RCR when defeated, "Barf!"
Edit: Also, the angel rising from an ally's body is a reference to this happening to defeated players in Super Dodgeball!
one of the sprites in 25:13 looks like matpat from game theory and the one besides it looks like arin from game grumps
Actually, the person next to Arin is Ross O' Donovan. Animator, Co-host of Steam Train, and member of Game Grumps.
@@DuskusCB Dan and Arin voiced Jimmy and Billy. Ross actually voiced a red pompadour shop keeper, Shinji.
25:13 the one sporting pink hair is Kay Yu, artist on Twitter and staff member. On the top right I'm almost sure that's Arin Hanson AKA egoraptor
The knowledge you have on this series is insane. Good video
lol that looks like God of War next to that Splatoon case in that shop as well
God bless you for this content, i really need to play the old games
RCG is my first game in this franchise. Fascinating to see all the history and references. Thanks for the work you put into this video.
The 2 people drawing in 25:12 are Ross and Arin who lent their voices to the game, and the reason they're drawing is because they're both artists/animators, Ross is Rubberninja and arin is Egoraptor.....i got incredibly curious in why Arin was drawing with such excitement....probably something that starts with H and ends in I
I put your video along with your channel in my RCG streams. I've known a lot of these things but there were definitely some things I didn't know, so thank you for your info! 100%
These games have been a pillar in my childhood into adulthood, My brother and I played The NES River City random & super dodge-ball endlessly. Replay value counts and river city games deliver!
Agreed! Lots of great childhood memories with those two titles here as well :)
Thanks for the video, rather new to the series but i loved RCGs! BTW if you ever do another of these 7:22 is definitely a reference to Doki Doki literature club (Yuri)
I thought I heard familiar tracks during my playthrough!
You just made me boot up the NES River City Ransom to replay that one too. Was a blast to relive quite a few games of old with this. Missed a few references, but I'm sure the comments got that covered seeing how old this video is. Thank you much for this trip down memory lane
I have just finished the game and... wow. You are a hardcore fan. Thanks for this video.
25:13 i feel like the glasses pink girl is a reference to Kay yu, an twitter freelancer artist with REALLY good drawings aswell as working on some episodes of Mushoko tensei
Honestly, there's something cute about Katie and her shop still being 8-bit in a hi-def world. :p
A rabbit pin and a tank pin..... seems like a best match.
(The secret shop items are a kamen rider build reference)
I really do hope RCG has been able to get newcomers more into Kunio-kun, especially in the West. Here in America, this series does NOT get enough notoriety.
I agree entirely ever since I heard and watched people play river city girls I’ve been into the series ever since ! 👍🏻👍🏻✨✨💖💖
I appreciate the slight laugh at "Scrub Fighter," one of the names of the in-arcade arcade games. When I wrote these songs I thought of imaginary games (and names) and they kept the names I came up with. 28:44 I still think Twin Corgi is the most ridiculous of the names haha
Thanks for commenting! Really enjoyed these arcade tracks and how they dynamically change when moving around in that area :) made sticking around a lot of fun! I'd actually love to be able to play or at least see more of these imaginary games hehe. Twin Corgi makes me think of a really epic, military-themed cute'em up with puppies. "A wholesome, brutal bullet hell classic for the whole family".
Very good explanation about the characters. Nice job.
Woah, dude you did a great job at gathering all the references, nice editing, straight and to the point. I felt a great nostalgia discovering these cameos while playing the game hahaha. Good video dude :D
I didn’t exactly love this game as a whole but holy crap I appreciate it a lot more after this video. I loved RCR as a kid and never knew the series had as long of a run in Japan. Love all the nods and winks in the game. You can tell it was a labor of love!
Awesome video, there's a lot of references that I didn't saw.
I think the song payday sounds like captain tsubasa dragon screamer
Let's not forget the moves from the girls themselves is shout out to SF Chun Li and Cammy Cannon Drill, Lighting Kicks and Spinning Bird Kick. Even a Dragon Punch. And WWE Stone Cold Stunner.
Despite your deep accent, you manage to pronounce japanese names very well. Good job, admirable.. I'll be tuning in for more content like that ;)
Wow, it must've taken an immense amount of effort to make this video! Thanks so much for your hard work!!!
13:25 I personally prefer Noize.
19:24 She also looks and acts like Tomoko from Watamote after a few months sticking to a workout regime. I thought that the workout had made Tomoko gain a lot of confidence but maybe a little too much since she's going to get fired if she continues being rude to customers.
*15:38* 🤔
_"Psychic Powers Activate"_
Great video
Ya decía yo que no estaba loco!
Entonces entendí una gran parte de referencias xD
Can we just have a game where we can play all 6? Billy, Jimmy, Kunio, Riki, Misako, and Kyoko.
I believe the Rabbit and Tank charms are a reference to Kamen Rider, because one of the series uses like combo powerups and the main character uses a rabbit and tank combo
While it might be a coincidence, it's not impossible :)
That particular Kamen Rider series aired around the same time that this game was in production.
Wow this is cool!
18:28 The secret shop itself is a cameo since River City Ransom also had a secret shop in a tunnel called "Merlin's Mystery Shop".
A couple more:
1. Perhaps the Godai task where you destroy a few cars in "Downtown" is a nod toward the car destruction bonus stage from Street Fighter 2.
2. Whenever you enter the "Shanty Town" part of "Downtown", (i.e. the place where you would find the black car in Godai's car destruction task), there's always a terminator-like enemy who is initially kneeling with a fist to the ground just like the pose the T-800 gives when it makes its first appearance in the original Terminator movie.
In retrospect it would be gnarly to see a Guilty Gear or Blazblue reference or two in the sequel. Heck maybe even cameos. Like seeing Raymond/Judgement from GG Judgement, one of GG's beatem up.
Kind of a shame that Combatribe's villain was never a boss looking both. Though who knows maybe she, Judgement and other villains might show up as hidden guest bosses. Heh maybe we'll see a variant of Robo Ky. Albeit a Robo Misako who can imitate the various moves that the players can perform like she is a Robo Ky Mk2 from GG Isuka which were bosses
So getting kicked out of a window is normal for a crime lord? Thought it was reference to Def jam fight for NY 😅
You know you've made it big if you're getting kicked out of windows like a boss.
Can't wait for that follow up video about the ending
It would be badass to have a game with this design of Marian. Imagine the next double dragon game where Marian actually avoids the punch and goes to town on the goons and that’s when Billy and Jimmy come in to help her out.
I think they should remake or re-imagine Double Dragon 3 and have Marian as a playable character. Imagine this:
- The game features up to 3 playable characters.
- At first, player 1 is Billy and player 2 is Jimmy. Player 3 is Sonny, who's not a Lee brother but he's also a sousetsu-ken practitioner.
- Stage 1 is the dojo and downtown. The final boss is Jim, the younger brother of Willy. After this, the dragons go on finding the four Rosetta stones and the game gives you a selection of 4 stages, MegaMan style. Finishing a stage will give an extra character for each player, which are faced as bosses in those stages (probably, possessed by the stones) and you can change characters on the fly.
- Beating Los Angeles' uptown will unlock the amazon street brawlers, one of them is Marian (who is Billy's companion, of course).
- Beating Kyoto will unlock the ninjas.
- Beating Beijing unlocks the kung fu guys.
- Beating Roma unlocks the gladiator type
- After that you go to Egypt, the 6th stage, with the pyramid as a separate 7th stage and the chaos dimension as the 8th and final stage, where Cleopatra is the final boss.
@@supadupa8088 Better yet: one of the ninjas is a kunoichi. And instead of kung fu guys, kung fu girls in traditional Chinese garments.
Yamada/Simon/Slick could levitate objects in River City Ransom EX, the GBA remake.
Alm gold is literally Ansem the seeker of darkness from kh lmao
14:20 Hmm, I always thought the spinning combo is a reference to Kakutō Densetsu, but DD ref. makes more sense here.
They have Billy and Jimmy Lee twins from Double Dragon
This is so weird seeing a video breaking down all the references I thought most people wouldnt pick up on
there is an NPC that looks like Brook Of Pokemon
I swear Naritaka looks like Mathew Patel from scott pilgrim. 8:14
Haha, she's literally called "Kid Sabu"
Eh. "Child of Sabu" is more accurate. "KO" on the end of a name is a very traditional way to name girls, and it just denotes a child of someone. More than half the time, but not always...
30:19 Fun fact: Kyoko´s voice actress Kira Buckland is a Jojo fan, and she is also voicing Jolyne Kujo in Jojo Bizzare Adventure.
I just want to add the Zombie movement is from Shantae series.
This game had alot of easter eggs and refrences. I love this game
If I am correct, that baseball manga is one of Araki’s favorites. Yes, the guy who made JoJo.
The dast kick move is definitely a reference to Chun Li lighting Kick from Street Fighter.
Smack Down - The disco club theme from Kunio-tachi no Banka
Knock Out - The jail fight theme from Kunio-tachi no Banka
I always felt that that kid at the beach(sprites at 25.17) looks like the protag of Undertale.
Vlad the Impaler isn’t Dracula in the original book. Bram Stoker never knew about him and just heard the name.
In Romania you can get into a lot of trouble saying Vlad The Impaler is Dracula as Vlad is a sort of national hero there given he fought off Ottoman invasion for years.
Yamada DOES get his wish eventually doesn't he? He's the protagonist of a River City Ransom game with time traveling villains.
If video game characters became self-aware and met up regularly like they do in the Wreck-It Ralph universe, Marian would make a great counselor for all the ryona victims. Particularly females from fighting games or side-scrolling beat em ups that are forced to get beat up by omission of action from the player. Lmao.
29:15 I think it's a reference to Capcom's Darkstalkers/Vampire Savior fighting game series.
I guess Skullmageddon having a voice like Skeletor was too obvious to even mention.
some sounds of skill like Up+Punch have a same sound of the knee skill (similar "tiger knee" of sagat of SF2) of the kunio kun nekketsu soccer
NICE REFERENCE
lol didnt know why they turn godai into weird character. in nes kunio, especially ganbare dunk heroes, he's actually very funny
Heck I wouldn’t even mind a Zeldish type of game as well👍🏻
Excuse me, but will you do a video like this for the sequel? I would love to see all the references covered.
Yes it did . And now pray and let's see theres a rcg3
25:20
The pink-haired girl in sunglasses is the original character of Kay Yu, the lead animator of River City Girls. The two guys drawing together in the top right corner are Ross and Arin from Game Grumps
GODDAMN IT GODAI! I HECKIN TRUSTED YOU.
I just saw in the Devs reacting to speedrun where they talked about how most of the custom sprites are either devs or their OCs :D
I played and loved Crash N the Boys wayyyy back on the NES, but I never played another Kunio-kun until this one. I really loved that game and have always been interested in the franchise since I'm a beat-em-up fan. River City Girls was absolutely awesome to play. Also, I'm super impressed with the depth of knowledge on display here. You really, clearly know your stuff!
Also, that "Almas" in Arabic means Diamonds, so his name is Diamonds Gold :)
River City Girls 2 will have Marian and new a capoeira girl playable
15:40 Yooooo straight up called it!
Especially based on the various Double Dragon cameos and guest stars I saw in RCG,I honestly hope Arc System Works has Wayforward Games make a true worthy successor and revitalizer of the Double Dragon franchise; this series deserves it and it's been a long time coming.
Don't get me wrong, I immensely enjoyed Double Dragon Neon, and it was a good start. But it was also missing some key components that makes a Double Dragon game, a Double Dragon game (i.e. not being able to grab an opponent by the head and knee them repeatedly, no clutch/grapple mechanics whatsoever if I remember correctly; and the combat in general just wasn't that polished.) Plus, I think we would all rather have a Double Dragon with the visual aesthetic of either the pixels of RCG or the hand drawn style of SOR4, than the 2.5D look of DDNeon.
Not to mention the fact that Arc System Works themselves made the utterly baffling decision to go several decades backwards by having Double Dragon 4 be nothing more than a glorified Double Dragon 2 Rom Hack (imagine my disappointment, when I initially heard that Arc System Works was working on this title and was expecting Double Dragon 4 to have Guilty Gear style graphics.)
So yeah, a true Double Dragon 4, or even a Double Dragon 5, done properly and right, is definitely in order.
Wich is the animation of Yamada with dark powers in nes version?
43:16 Where'd you get this picture of Hasebe and Mami???
23:24 Right above that Warriors tag, you missed the tag 'Kunio Was Here'
I believe they made some references to Undertale too. I mean Skullmaggedon's laugh when you first meet him is based on Skeletor's from the He-Man series just like a certain human hunting fanatic and you can't tell me that the "Girl" (I think) on the lower left corner of 25:11 doesn't remind you of Frisk, can you?
So whats your thoughts on the update for the game where theres a new ending?
My thoughts on the new ending which me and many fans see as the real canon ending is that it sets River City Girls in the continuity as the games that were Japan-exclusive and never saw a western release. Basically it was revealed in the Japan-Only titles that Kunio never had romantic feelings for Hasabe in Middle School they were just friends however he does have crush on Misako with them developing romantic feelings for each other during the storyline of that one soccer title in the franchise, and Riki breaking up with Mami and beginning a relationship with Kyoko during the frame of time after the events of River City Ransom, but before the events of the Super Famicon title Kunio-Kun No Bachi which was the entry that introduced Kyoko along with making her and Misako unlockable playable characters during the main story.
Skullmegeddons personality and voice was based on skeletor in rcg.
The nameless Yakuza is more than likely a nod to Goro Majima from the Yakuza series of games. More specifically his Lord of the Night outfit in Yakuza 0
I hope they make a River City Girls 3-4! But for all the consoles!
DEMETRI looks like Death from DeathNote
I hope you make a video about the references in River City Girls 2.
I thought "Vampire Puncher" was a reference to the Japanese name for the second Darkstalkers game (which is Vampire Hunter).
Pattison looks like a reference to Pat Morita, what do u think?
I just finished the game and it's so good
Marian's in RCG2!
What about secret magazine?
The pink haired girl seen at 25:16 belongs to kaynimatic on twitter. (Slight NSFW warning if you decide to check their twitter out)
They're one of the artist that worked on River City Girls.
Bruh that one dude who disliked for the memes....
This game is so good!
I was the lead VFX artist on RIver City Girls (And double dragon neon). Thanks for making this video! Awesome that you caught so much stuff. I'm in the top left corner of the sprites at 25:12 with my wife (Jessica) and Cat (Casanova). It was a blast working on this game. :)
Thanks for watching and commenting! :D it shows that the team had a blast making it. I was also really curious about that sprite, so thanks for solving the mystery. I'll most likely add it to a future video, as I have more planned for Kunio and RCGirls.
Joel Benefiel Hey we are monster fans of this game and just had Megan Mcduffee on our podcast and would love to have you on as a guest if you are interested.
You did a superb job - this game is legend - will you guys do a sequel in the future ?
Way to go on this project! This game was ridiculously fun and hilarious. Any time I see Wayforward has made something, I know that I'm gonna love it
Amazing job ya did mate. Just finished this game with my brother and I just gotta say, thank y’all for making such good memories for us, we 100%’d it and we enjoyed every second. Y’all really knocked this one out of the park ✌️🌟
