    (Don’t have PR, did play original FFVI)
    This scene, this music and this character nearly broke me as a teenager. When she fell, I couldn’t take it and shut off my SNES. My sibling then asked me why didn’t I keep playing and I explained that I couldn’t take it. They rolled their eyes at me and said, “She lives.” And I had to go through it all over again (from save point, I’m not a fool) and carry on. But this scene is just hard to take, and imagining taking it as a young person just a ball of feelings, I’m surprised I kept it together as well as I did.

      So even with the "leap of faith" dialogue (Ted Woolsey was probably forced to change it due to Nintendo of America's content policy at the time), you knew what was really going on. And you probably weren't the only one.

    It's a testament that a simple 16-bit character can make you cry. You can't even see the face that well but you don't need to; it's the music combined with her hopelessness that makes you feel for Celes in this scene. Even though she's just a sprite she can convey such sadness to you, the player. And you really can't blame her for what's she's going through.
    Sometimes you don't need complex graphics to have an emotional moment.

      Totally agree, as a kid who played the original game. I didn’t understood celes but I know what she’s going through
      As someone who has undergone depression and attempted s*icide a ton of times. I must say that I cried today rewatching this scene cause I felt like I’ve been into Celes’ shoes for a while. It crushes me from the inside, now that I’ve rewatched and understood Japanese (Which I learned recently), It indeed moved me to chills.
      After a long artist break, I am thinking of coming back to game development one of these days. It is indeed difficult but I know I can make it through^^

    Yes. As a character i enjoyed more Celes. But whos the Heroine of FF6? Its Terra…the story starts talking about esper /magic, and ends talking about this. But Celes’Knight visual is 10/10, so for me, both deserves the 1th together.

      I think the part of it that is beautiful is that it's in 2D pixels, and players had to use their imaginations. It switches the focus to the aesthetics of the music and story, and players' imagination, which is the point of the whole "fantasy" genre.

    As I became an adult, I realized I was more and more like Celes than any other fictional character out there. I feel alone quite often, thoughts of despair take over, and there are a lot of days where I don’t want to be alive.
    Yet she somehow found her composure. She found a reason to live, to fight. This is what I have to do daily to ensure my survival: find a reason to live.
    That’s why she will always be my favorite fictional character ever. She has given me the strength to keep going most days.

    It’s my very first time playing FF6 and I arrived at this part of the game, I’m a 25yo gamer and it’s been many years I did not feel that much in a video games, I felt so many emotions there, just before this point of the games arrive you’re only you and your friends looking to beat the empire’s ass, it sucks yeah, but you’re not alone, then all of sudden, boom, nothing but desperation. And it’s insane how much I felt alone there, you and only the brave Cid trying his best to survive and put a smile on Celes’s face.

    Why didn't this scene happen in my playthrough? In mine, Cid survived and showed Celes that he had been building the raft every time she went out to catch fish for him. When she returns to the island on the Falcon, Cid is still alive and well.

    • @MilenskiF.E.
      @MilenskiF.E. Před rokem +2

      It depends on what type of fish you fed Cid with. Each fish has a different description where it tells you how it tastes when it's fed to Cid. If you want Cid to die like in this scene, keep feeding him the foul-tasting fish. It increases your chance of getting this outcome. I personally went for this because it gives Celes a better character development, but it doesn't really impact the outcome of the story. It just gives you another reason to shed tears over Celes.

    • @Flareboxx
      @Flareboxx Před rokem +1

      @@MilenskiF.E. Oh interesting. I was just annoyed that I was having to go back and forth to get fish for like 10 minutes that I was completing it as fast as I could without much thought.

      @justawanderingoldman7699 Před 6 měsíci

      @@MilenskiF.E.Yeah. Story-wise, killing Cid will bring a better story. But as a kid back then (tho guess it's still the same now), I just can't make Celes suffer more. And so, I will always save Cid. But I also always make a save file at this point. So I can see this sad scene.
      Imo, the story will be better if they add a proper plot about the scenario where Cid is still alive. It doesn't have to be a big one. Just something like Celes and Cid can have some father-daughter interactions whenever we decided to revisit the island will be nice. Or maybe adding a special ending cutscene where Celes comes back to the island to meet Cid. That way, at least while this scenario is not as good as the one where Cid die, it can still be a more canon main scenario instead of treated like a minor side quest like now.

    I still think Cid's death should be the only option. Not because I hate a happy ending (haha... sorry) but more because it's more impactful. If you save Cid, then yay happy... but this version of the world isn't happy. It's chaotic, dark, filled with death and destruction and Cid's death portrays that tragedy perfectly, for Celes' character at least. Celes, gone for a year, on an island, alone, then the only person she loved aside from Locke dies. Impactful. Other side - she believes her friends are dead, Cid survives... it's just unusual for that to feel happy... kinda out of place.

    • @chrisfrost7945

      I think it showed how real and dire the situation was/is. Its something not a lot of games were doing at the time and it really left an impact, even if it didn't really fit what she was suppose to represent. The world is in ruin, kefka is ruling the world, cid is the only person left with her on a small island and everyone else might as well be dead. This scene really hit that emotional chord for people. Her living from there suicide attempt is used to show that It wasn't the right choice and that there is so much more life to live.

    • @RocketPropelledGuy
      @RocketPropelledGuy Před rokem +13

      L take. Cid dying inflicts a personal hardship she needs to overcome like everyone else in the world of ruin. She had no particular attachment to anyone else before except Locke who she has every reason to believe is dead. Celes needs to have something to lose and then actually lose it for the glimmer of hope in the shape of Locke's bandana to be meaningful. The audience needs to have her despairing state communicated to them. It also demonstrates Cid's compassion for Celes taking all the time to build this raft while ghastly ill and suspecting or knowing he will not survive to join her on it.
      Cid just going "Hey thanks for feeding me btw I've had this raft ready this whole time lmao also I'm just gonna stay on this island all alone even though I don't need to" is absolutely stupid in comparison. Square should have made it impossible to save Cid.
