  • From my father's archive is this film showing a Fowler Road Roller 15854 'Dreamer' driven by Jim Smith which was the last Council owned Steam Roller in Yorkshire. Not sure of the year or location but could possibly be Earby (historically West Riding of Yorkshire). Please comment if you can identify the location and year. Thank You.

This Video has been picked up and shared to our FB group and we can definitely say its Westcliffe Road, Cleckheaton junction between Bramhope Road and Westcliffe Road

I'm from Cleckheaton area and would say that's bang on. I'd have guessed Whitcliffe Road - but it's the same area, and a true Cleckheatoner would know better than me (what with me coming from nearly a mile away :-) )

A lovely film & what a fantastic building to keep the roller in. I hope both roller & building are being looked after.

    Clues:
0:29 a canvas hut in the background with SCHD on it. A council initials maybe? The sign behind that is for a new housing development.
At 0:47 2:25 3:13 there are Morris J4 vans in shot. The interesting one is at 2:25, a van in service with the post office. J4s were purchased by the PO up until 1974. J4s had a short hard service life, so this film is perhaps no later than '75.

@@peterflitcroft9756 I couldn’t find anything relating to its withdrawal date but what I was able to find was a build date 1923 and a reference to a article where it was rediscovered in a shed in 1979 in earby so the date it was retired was before 1979 and if the cars are anything to go by it’s after late 1966 (you can generally buy the next years model of car in the previous year for example you can buy a 2021 model in the second half of 2020)

Around 1970 as late as 1973, I reckon.

What became of the roller? The last one I saw was 'Merioneth' owned by Merioneth County Council, being used by Cardiganshire County Council' in the late 1960s... and that one was saved. Same maroon livery I think...

Could be as late as early seventies going by the stripey tank top.

There’s a mark 2 mini (1967) and a Ford zephyr 1967 and I saw a Morris minor but couldn’t tell the year so that didn’t help much but my guess is late sixties

Shame this sight is long gone. Nowadays it takes them a week to throw a cold lump of tarmac into a pothole which they don’t even roll it out. It only takes another week and the lump gets washed out of the hole with the rain!

    It's Cleckheaton.
I wonder who the kids are? They'll be OAP's by now...
