      @@NP1066 Malaysia and Singapore are melting pot of cultures. Malaysia has 70% Malay + indigenous, 23% Chinese, 7% Indians + Sikhs. Our old Chinese families who speak Malay or Hokkien as their mother tongue are called peranakans. The much older Indian ones are called chettis, and they've been around since the 1400s. Most Chinese Malaysians and Indian Malaysians are 3rd gen Malaysian at least. We also have Portuguese aka Kristang or Serani, who've been here since the 16th century. We also have pre-WW2 Japanese, no idea what happened to them. Our Arabs and Dutch I think have assimilated into the mix. The last Jew in Malaysia died in 2011. We also have aboriginals too in west Malaysia - I only know of the semang.
      And that's just west Malaysia. I haven't gotten to the East yet.
      So ya, one can never really tell that there's a MY/SG in the crowd. For all you know, that Chinese girl might be Malaysian. Chinese race, Malaysian nationality.
      By the way, the 'mix heritage' trait is not unique to Malaysia or Singapore. Pretty much all of maritime south east asia is diverse.

    A fun episode is to invite an ethnicity from a country you would least likely to associate with in terms of looks, so as to educate outsiders the diversity of a country. Eg. From China (non Han-looking Chinese, eg. Uyghur, Tajik, Russian, Tartars etc), India (Manipur, those from Northeast), Philippines (Han Chinese looking or Spanish-looking Filipino), Mongolia (those who like Han Chinese or even Russian looking), where as Central Asia nations no need to do so because like Uyghurs, their peoples can have different looks, so it's not that easy to guess.

      @@tedd4864 ethnic groups does not mean "race" race is a Western notion that refers simply to skin color. Indonesian ethnic groups belong to "Austronesian" ethnicity. Meaning they belong to one race. It's not the same as Malaysians where they have "South Asians" aka Indians, "Austronesians" aka Malay, and East Asians aka "Chinese" in equal numbers compared to Indonesia which are roughly 80-90% Austronesian. Your Indonesian ethnicities are basically "ethno-linguistic groups" but they're all under one Austronesian family tree. Get it?

      I agree, Asia is so cool. Even though people categorize asian as east, south, southeast, central or whatever, asians from India compete with the Thai on who has the best curry. Even though we are not identical, culturally and even language all asian countries have a lot of similitaries.

    I think majority of Indians are very unique, we don't typically fall neither into the Caucasian nor the Mongoloid or even Negroid features( although generally, the farthest north, east and southern regions bear some similarities with all of the aforementioned groups). Culturally, we are unique as well, nothing is similar with middle-east, Europe or even Eastern Asia, although the closest is probably SE Asia followed by East Asia.
    That might compound these small facets. Plus, I would like to see one from Bhutan as well, we know literally nothing about the country as we do with Myanmar, Mongolia, Laos.

      @@pomodoro385 I get what you're saying but, like I said, those are outdated racial terms. There are newer terms that replace these archaic terms that are based on genetics an not physical appearance. Iranian Farmers and Steppe pastoralists are West Eurasian, AASI is East Eurasian (deep lineage) and Austroasiatic and Tibeto-Burman farmers are also East Eurasian (of the ESEA sublineage).

      @user-jt3dw6vv4x Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@nakano-ariko Yeah you're right, the people in Bangladesh, east India, Assam etc. are mixed with Tibeto-Burmese ancestry. I knew of someone who was from Bangladesh and she could've passed as "Southeast Asian" but that entire region is mixed. My friend is Bamar from Myanmar and her dad looks Bamar too but compared to the rest of Asian population, he's closer to the "Indian" side rather than the "typical Southeast Asian" or "East Asian" side in terms of facial features.
      It's not surprising though. The Ancient East Eurasians were originally darker skinned with broader features (like Indian tribals or Negritos of Southeast Asia) but through genetic splitting and evolutionary development, lighter skinned individuals emerged known as Neo-East Asians, who split from other East Eurasians. Those darker skinned East Eurasians remained in India and South Asia while the Neo-East Asians spread into East Asia and Southeast Asia. Melinda A. Yang has a study about this, if anybody is interested to know more.
