Wow, not used to seeing restaurants so empty 👀
Up this end of Samui it's more locals than tourists and the locals have been hit hard due to the past thing that hit the world. The Thursday night markets have closed so tourists don't come here anymore like they did when the markets were alive, it's sad as this is the China Town of Samui.

I'm coming back to Maenam in a couple months for an extended stay.
So really, I'm really only familiar with the main drag along the highway.
I'm interested in your tips on how to get a bit more grounded and connected within the community there.
... it's one of the places I'm considering for my future "home base" for extended stays in Thailand.

The best way is to get out and walk around all of the main roads and back streets as there are many in Maenam and Maenam is a large area with many places to stay in. Maenam is one of my favourite locations on the island and I would love to call this home one day.
Can you recommend a place to stay there for a long time?
How long are you staying for? I would stay in one of the resorts here for a week and while you are here check out the area (as it is large) and walk the streets where you will see places for rent like, houses or apartments, then make contact with the owner or agent and then work out a deal.
If your staying in a resort you might also be able to arrange a long tern deal. No harm is asking.

As I commented elsewhere, I've been there several times and it's a place I'm considering for my "home base" on stays for 3 to 6 months.
I'm okay with simple, humble, accomodations -- in fact, I prefer that sort of thing.
