    I really appreciate you advocating for the simpler cameras. I feel like in this community there's a tendency to shit on things that are more basic, but easy, simple machines is kinda what instant photo is all about :)

      Thank you for this comment Zack! That was definitely my intention with this video and always something I’m keeping in mind. I always want to stay accessible and still cover entry-level topics and cameras because for many folks, that’s the most helpful kind of video! Like the force, it’s all about balance.

      If you mean in instant photography and not in film photography in general, I think more than a tendency to shit on simple cameras, people are tired that there aren't more options that allow you versatility. There aren't any cameras that have fast sharp interchangeable lenses, full manual control and accurate viewfinders. I think most people agree that an instax 9 is very enjoyable because of how simple, tactile and reliable it is, but the moment you want a picture with softer light you start craving for more options. I think that's why there are so many mods now, like franken instax and medium format backs and slr670s

    I know this video is 2yrs old but i will add in here if anyone is watching videos doing some research , i went with the sq1 simply because the sq6 is discontinued and a lot of people stated when their sq6 had issues and fuji would offer a replacement they would send them an sq1 so instead of having the sq6 which does have more features i went with the 1 for the simple favt its still being produced

    And to think I got in Kickstarter to get the Mint square. Oh the money I could have saved. But I want to learn photography in my old age and with COVID I would be afraid to go to classes if they were available.
    All kidding aside, if I didn’t have a SQ6 I would be tempted. I have so many more flubs than keepers, it’s nice not to have to think and just shoot although I am getting used to composing for the Lomo square and it’s always fun to try.

    I’m a Polaroid guy, always have been and always will be. My Polaroid camera collection has grown leaps and bounds since I bought my Impulse AF in the mid 90’s and I use everyone of them SX-70 and 600’s when I can get film. Yes, the Stratmann is in his mid 50’s but very young at mind and heart. Anyways, I like how the Fuji stuff seemingly produces colourful and clear images every time with no effort and it can be purchased at my local drugstore like my beloved Polaroid “used” to do.Is it me, or is Polaroid not quite there yet with their chemistry. And if not, when ? Fuji seems to have nailed it, why not Polaroid ? Is corporate espionage no longer a thing in this new millennium ? If the SQ 1 had a timer built into it, I might maybe consider it, maybe. But I can’t and won’t give up on Polaroid, ever.
    Love your informative and entertaining channel. Please keep the videos coming.

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  Před 3 lety +2

      Polaroid chemistry is unlikely to get to where Fuji is, but I really do think the consumer base isn't really looking for that anymore. What current Polaroid chemistry offers is wholly unique, and definitely beautiful! Fuji is working with legacy chemistry they've used for over 30 years, so they've got a massive jump on the Polaroid reboot, which cannot use the chemicals from prior film. Definitely wish the SQ1 had a timer! Thanks Stratmann!

    I got my SQ1 just to try out the format (I only shot Polaroid, Instax Mini and Instax Wide before) and I loved it! While I do think I'll be getting SQ6 in the future for more creative endeavors (like traveling and photowalks), there's definitely a huge place in my heart for simple point-and-shooters. These are great for family events or hanging out with friends - anyone can take a shot and it'll turn out relatively good.

    Friggin cool video, and yeah, the camera is great too. I like how Instax is filling Polaroid's old place in the market while the actual Polaroid is becoming the premium option.
    One thing I'll probably never get though is why not having those features is an advantage. Why not get an SQ6 and just never press those buttons if you don't want to? Sure, the SQ1 may be easy to use, but the SQ6 is actually just as easy for the same task, just turn it on and shoot, the only difference is it's capable of more as well.

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  Před 3 lety +3

      For sure, regarding the SQ6. I mean that’s the great conundrum and oddity with this product. I guess what I’m saying is if an entry level user loved the design of this camera and won’t even look at the buttons on the SQ6, regardless they’re going to pick it up and fire away. Honestly I own the SQ1 over the SQ6 because it’s aesthetically much nicer to have sitting out all the time (it’s our coffee table camera essentially). And def agreed with Instax supplanting Polaroid in that area of the market with Polaroid being premium; such an odd thing but I’m glad both exist.

    • @UNSCPILOT
      @UNSCPILOT Před 2 lety +1

      Having just bought a two pack of Polaroid 600 cartridges, I agree on it being premium.
      Still, being able to revive a second hand Polaroid Impulse AF I got as a kid but was never able to refill is kinda exciting and cathartic even if my EOS Rebel T6 "technically" walks all over this thing I still want to use both just for the entirely different experience and result.
      Much to my surprise digging this out even convinced me to pick up a 35mm EOS Rebel Ti to get some more film fun for cheap and with the bonus of using the same EF lenses as my Rebel T6, it also amuses me that it's that metallic silver plastic that seems to define the late 90's and early 2000's XD

    • @DeeSnow97
      @DeeSnow97 Před 2 lety

      @@UNSCPILOT Honestly, the Impulse AF is such an amazing camera, it's my favorite of any Polaroid (hell, any camera at that point) because you can just point it at a memory and click the button, trusting it fully that it's gonna get you a picture of whatever your scene was without any fuss. No need to wait for the AF, double-check anything, it's so frickin fast... seriously, I got shots on it where I went from noticing something interesting to having the pic eject from the camera within a second. Plus the viewfinder is insanely good for a non-SLR, the ergonomics are unbeatable, and that self-timer is just the cherry on top.
      Good luck with the Rebel Ti (or break a leg I guess, not sure how to genuinely wish good luck without it coming off as sarcastic). I kinda love these fully motorized SLRs from the 80s and 90s, helped a friend out with a Nikon F75 (same deal on the compatibility, but with Nikon lenses) and got to take a couple shots on it too. At first, I was a bit afraid the analog magic wouldn't be there, but it still had the same amazing experience, so I quickly tracked down a Minolta 7000 (kind of a crappier variant of the same experience, the AF is a bit shoddy and needs lots of light and contrast to work, but it's got those 80s aesthetics to compensate and it was hella cheap), and it's now the one 35mm camera I actually shoot.
      Back on Polaroid, it's also kinda crazy how much the film improved in the 7 months since this video and my original comment here. Just took some shots on 7/21 600 film a few days ago, and the colors are flat out on par with Instax, without losing the Polaroid character. Seriously, I have a whole bunch of both on my wall, and you used to be able to tell a pretty damn stark difference a year and a half ago, but that's completely gone now. It is truly a premium option at this point, no drawbacks whatsoever, and you get so much creativity with those formats...
      Welp, have fun shooting, you picked a great time to join.

      @@DeeSnow97 looking forward to putting the Impulse AF threw its paces, and yeah, the Rebel Ti looks to be a '02 model with supposedly good AF and exposure control, plus, for 50 bucks I really don't need to worry about it and I kinda adore that early 2000's metallic plastic.
      Might not use the Impluse super often since it's expensive to feed, but the Rebel Ti will probably be munching threw rolls of Kodak gold 200 since it's seemingly everywhere.... assuming development isn't too overly pricey.
      Something that also made me laugh is that I dug up two old disposable cameras that weren't developed yet, don't even remember when they're from but I'll probably get those (finally) developed too, I'm certain they're close to 10 years old

      Polaroid Now is similar price as Fuji SQ1, even cheaper here in Poland

    • @DeeSnow97
      @DeeSnow97 Před 3 lety +1

      well, we did have the "squished Now" leak, so to call it officially:
      - name: Polaroid Go
      - no exposure control, perhaps a double exposure or flash control but tentative on both
      - no bluetooth
      - smaller than the Now, but still on i-type film
      - autofocus to make it sharp wherever (or perhaps fixed lens if that'd make it too expensive, like a one600)
      - super stylish, that's the main selling point
      - $90
      - should happen around March, give or take one month
      this is all speculation of course, but at this point I have no better explanation for all the info we have

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  Před 3 lety

      Yeah I’d say the Polaroid Now is already most of the way there, especially since it’s features are sort of buried behind the LED menu, so it behaves like a flash point & shoot out of the box. But check out what Ben Snow said!

      @@InAnInstant I love your videos btw. I’m married to an industrial designer. And even he’s noticed a shift in how people use the word aesthetic. He’s seen that a lot of people use it to describe a certain design language that uses muted tones, rounded edges and things that would normally be trendy on social medium. But people are using the word aesthetic almost like saying minimalism or mid century modern when in reality it’s just a word to describe any given design language.
