Rolled ankles are the absolute worst, ten years later after getting a really bad one and i'm still rolling my ankle out every day.
Hey, if you don't mind me asking, how common are rolled ankles in BMX? I skate, but I often injure the upper part of the midfoot, just below/in front of the ankle. I've been thinking about picking up BMX because I feel like I won't injure that part as much. I am fine with getting injuries, I just want to stop getting that particular recurring injury. I've tried ankle and foot strengthening exercises, but even still I keep reinjuring it.
@@jonahmoore6437 Well, the two different sports will hurt your ankles in different ways. The chance of your foot slipping off your board and your ankle rolling vs your food slipping a pedal and your ankle rolling are about equal. Both I would consider a bit of a freak accident. BMX will hurt your ankles when you take big drops on your bike because your pedal might slightly rotate upon landing placing all the strain in your ankles basically. However the act of pedaling your bike around town will help to strengthen your ankles and calves. Myself I don't really ever bike any big drop spots or send tricks down stairs very much and Ive actually never really hurt my ankles on my bike at all in the last couple of years. Skateboarding will place a lot of strain on whichever foot you push with, as the repetitive act of pushing off the ground with your toe/mid foot will wear away at your ankle joint and also give you a muscular imbalance in your pushing leg and also and imbalance in your support leg (front foot leg). That being said, if you make a point to learn to ride and push both regular and switch stances, you can alleviate this problem though not completely. Regardless of each though, once an ankle gets blown out really bad even just once (swelling, bruising, lack of mobility, unable to apply proper weight on your foot), there are so many complex tendons, small bones, and microscopic muscular crosshatching and connection points that you'll likely never get it back to normal. Prevention and mitigation is key. Check out SpaceBrace if your ankle really starts getting bad, regularly ice, keep on your physical therapy, and welcome to the crowd! :D
@@jonahmoore6437 Also, strains and sprains are often much worse and more complex injuries than a simple break of a bone and will typically have much longer healing times. It may require you to spend a few months off of the board/bike if it keeps persisting. Extra annoying too because these types of injuries will often "feel good enough to ride on" but often times its not the case. Especially professional athletes will often be laid up for several months for even small injuries to ensure the best healing process, which is what will lead them back on their steed of choice ASAP.
@@Jordan_93_ thanks for the info. I've been skating for quite a few years, it's just like you said though, I hurt my foot really badly on a blunt to fakie a couple years back and now if I mess up and slip on like a five stair, it almost always puts me out for a couple weeks to a month. I don't really skate stairs or even down rails now because of that. If I do get into bmx, it would almost surely be mostly flat ledges and rails, as well as regular park ramps and whatnot. After being forced to take several months off in a row for various injuries in the past, the best part is getting back onto the bike/board after that amount of time because your whole entire body really gets to fully heal and you feel superhero strong the first few sessions back. I've always found that my body never really forgets tricks either, even after years of being off a skateboard (my knees can't handle regular skating anymore) i can still do most of the tricks I could do at the time to this day, it's the mental battle and the confidence "i'm going to land this trick, i know that i can do this" that really takes time to build back up.
