Why the floods in Libya were so destructive and deadly | DW News

  • Libya is struggling to deal with the thousands of bodies being recovered in the aftermath of devastating floods. Overwhelmed officials have registered nearly 4,000 - a number that is expected to rise as more bodies are found.
    Corpses are washing up on the coast after being swept out to sea when torrential rains caused two dams to burst, causing flash floods that destroyed large parts of the city of Derna. The World Health Organization has urged Libyan authorities to stop burying victims in mass graves, to avert future legal and emotional problems.
    Meanwhile, the Red Cross is warning that the floods may have uprooted landmines and explosives left over from the country's years of conflict. Despite the many dangers, helpers are scouring the wreckage.

    Not exactly a climate related disaster when there is '...systemic corruption and lack of infrastructure investment...', an ancient and extensive wadi system is dammed and the (cracked) dams are not maintained, at risk homes are built downstream of the dams within the wadis, and there is no weather reporting system. Sad but inevitable man-made event.

      @Rnankn Před 9 měsíci +5

      Um, the climate is now ‘man-made’. And that’s the point, unrelated risks become related and amplified when background conditions destabilize. Everything just gets worse, in unforeseeable ways.

      They should've released some of the water in the dams. They had to do that where I grew up in 1985. Flooded bad but saved a lot because the dam didn't break!

    Frankly & sorry to say, one thing that comes to mind when I hear the word Libya on the World News is: "Conflict Country and hardliners. Much blood has been spilled in Libya." - May GOD have mercy on Libya. Hopefully through this incident the Libyan people can change and reconcile and live in peace.

    I so appreciate DW News not being skittish around the grotesque nitty-gritty concerns of a disaster. - So much news coverage comes off as “disaster porn”, a form of clickbait, that never addresses the needs and challenges in regard to solutions. DW is respectful of those who suffer by addressing their needs in gritty detail. Just another reason it’s my favorite network across the planet. -

    Because of the multiplication of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come…Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know the day on which your Lord will come. But understand this: If the homeowner had known in which watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. For this reason, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.

    “But about that day or hour when the end will come, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. Keep watch for you know not the hour. Stay Blessed.

    The first thing Libya should do yo avoid long term misery is to ban distress sale of land. This is a valuable part of Libya and western vultures will be circling. Nobody knows why the dams could not be operated to avoid it.
