The vintage look is also due the thoriated glass of the super takumar that someone find a “nice feature”, to be honest I find much more precise the M in tones reproduction.
Yeah, same, I prefer the look of the M series as well
I was lucky enough to compare multiple versions:
Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 8 elements
SMC Takumar 50mm 1.4
Pentax SMC 50mm 1.4 K series
Pentax M 50mm 1.4
Pentax A 50mm 1.4
Pentax F 50mm 1.4
The 8-element, at least my copy, is the sharpest out of the lot. My copy is so sharp it can easily outresolve the K1's 36mp sensor.
The SMC Takumar and K series are optically identical.
The softest was the F but probably just a poor copy.
Thanks for sharing!
The 8 element takumar is sharp but also has some kind magic to it 👌
I have the Pentax and love it! Thanks 👍

salient. concise. tyvm!
Pentax M is my go to lens, when I really need a predictable good result. It has beautiful colors, quite natural with a little kick. The sharpness is very good, only Canon FD 50 1.4 and maybe Minolta MD 50 1.4 beats it, but the rendering of Pentax M pleases me more. One funny thing: I also have the Pentax A 50 1.4, but my copy is less sharp then my M version… Maybe sample variation… My Takumar is quite yellow and I keep it as is for some fun occasionally. It is a nice lens, quite sharp too.
Same!
Interesting to know the A is a little softer, I've only tried a couple A zooms so far.
Is your Takumar the 8-element version, or the later 7-element (radioactive) version? You can tell by looking at the IR indicator on the side of the lens.
7 elements
for me the winner is Takumar :) thank you
