- We have a huge pile of dirt to move and a ditch to dig so Tractor Time with Tim brought the John Deere 5075E with the RhinoAg 8 foot blade. It's our first time creating a ditch with a blade and there were a lot of roots near the surface making it challenging.

Nothing beats the smell of fresh dirt
Great video!!! I love the real life applications and agree with Christy in seeing some use a new attachment for the time. Great learning experience even for the viewer. Great job!
The line about it being more cumbersome, but you deal with it for the capabilities, is absolutely where we are with the 5320, as well! My Grandpa had a 1050 4wd for about 10-12 years, when I was growing up, then in probably 1998 he got the 5300. The 5300 and now 5320 are just about as big as you can fit down logging/skidder trails, and it tears up the ground a lot more, etc. etc, but MAN, when you want to load logs onto the car trailer with the loader, move dirt/gravel, grade the driveway, skid logs, or bush hog tall grass and brush... Well... It's so good at those things that you kind of deal with it being cumbersome at a lot of other things.
Tim is a blessed man that Christy puts up with him. Love y’all!
Good video Tim i think you did a good job with that blade for your first time thanks Tim and God Bless
You did good Tim, you'll get better, you always do. I liked seeing how you just walked into the pile of dirt to fill the bucket with the big tractor, no need to slam into it. Thank you guys again for an interesting video..
That is a very nice blade set up
That was nice machine handling Tim in this video! The earth moving and the ditch looked good.
Nice blade doing good job tim!!! Have a nice weekend!!
Love this video I have a 5055e with rear blade with no hydraulic or tail wheel. It’s super challenging and I’m learning it. The 8foot blade turned in with offset is so perfect for crowns on driveways.
Another great video from the new preschool play ground. I think its been more of Tim's play ground so far. This has also been a great opportunity to utilize the whole fleet putting many attachments to work and demonstrations. Johnny 5 can sure move a pile of dirt,
a lot more than Johnny 1 but it should work that way, size matters.
I think you did a great job with the blade and mirror...lol Good video!
I've fixed several mirrors with JB weld quite well when damaged behind the case.
Opps Tim on the mirror. Guess when your doing stuff, stuff is gonna happen. Nice video, love that backblade
Love your videos Tim
That is one super nice blade. Wish I would have had something like that when I was farming. Worked much better when you took the sides off. They would be great for grading/leveling. Those gauge wheels on the back are fantastic when you are trying to level ground. If you would have had that when you were doing the dirt moving job at the horse ranch I think you would have realized just what a great tool you have there.
Three bolts and a big bill latter is all you need for the truck love the pop pops or rip rip effects
Tim you just can't have anything nice LOL. I would like to see all the function on the blade sometime. Great video!!!!
The roots underground goes as far out from a tree as the limbs does above ground and that Rhino blade is doing a great job and it is good that the blade can be angled from inside the cab rather than manually like you normally would have to do manually if a box blade was used. That large tractor did a great job of cutting the ditch and you did great for a first time cutting it with that blade behind that tractor.
Great job on the trench !
Even the more experienced, everyone does things differently. Experience and watching others helps. I've farmed since childhood and still find better ways of doing things from others. I usually end up with a mix of my way, and the better parts of how someone else does it.
I remember our old loader tractor has the 2 sticks instead of the joystick our newer machine has. I could go twice as fast with the 2 stick because of the many years of feeding cows with it. Take care, you two
Tim: "there that looks better doesn't it?"
Christy: (silence)
Tim: (tapping on the microphone) "does this thing work?"
Crickets: chirp, chirp, chirping
Christy: "uh, yea, I was just trying to see" (oh, I dont want to crush his spirit) "I think we will need to come back with vinnie"
Ok so i added a little to the script but I thought it was nice that Christy was just trying to find a nice way of saying vinnie needs to come and play.
As always I enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing it with us.
Yep. Good exchange wasn’t it? :-)
Tim, I have an old Rhino blade that size and it's great behind my 80hp Massey or behind dad's 120 hp Valtra (actually like it better on the Massey due to the old manual control instead of electronic control lift). I'm extremely glad to see that you are learning how to operate a bucket in a dirt pile in a way that puts less stress on your cylinders. Putting your bucket down level and driving it in puts the stress more on the pins and less on the hydraulics. I've watched lots of videos where you back drag with your bucket pointed down and I understand the thought, it's easier to see where your dirt is ending it up, but using the back round portion of the bucket will put the stress on the pins of the main arm (more of that good old physics). On another note, it won't make much of a difference in a place where you don't have a lot of water flow, but if you will make your ditches about a blade or bucket wide at the bottom instead of V bottomed they won't erode as badly, the water will spread out more and slow instead of building up and cutting like a knife. Love the videos, hope my information can help you out in learning more about dirt work. Sincerely, Allen.
Great video! Good job with the blade! I believe if you extend your top link the blade should cut a little better. I have a 5 ft rhino from the 70s with all manual adjustments that does an awesome! I've used it for everything from trenching for an 8 inch drain line to leveling gravel. Love all your videos! Keep up the good work!
Great video!
So yep the mirror is likely a $1k fix. The last time I replaced one you get the whole thing and just move the painted cap over. There are 2 bolts under the sail panel in the door. Harness connector there.
As far as the blade I have a ton of hours with a 6r and the 10ft version. Even with a large frame 6 ballasted to about 20k a root or immovable object will slide the back of the machine with an angled blade. As far as breakage they either blow the seals on the hydraulic cylinder or break the welded on tab it's mounted to.
As far as the PowerQuad and auto reverser I find that I run the machine at 1200-1400rpm and run in A3 or A4 and that allows for a smoother clutch modulation and the bring the rpms up from the high idle if I need more power with the foot pedal.
I love the larger machine videos!
That machine also had scalping issue due to how far the blade stuck back. We didn't have the rear wheel so ended up using the 4th SCV for a hydraulic top link which helped in certain scenarios such as loading or crossing a Swale.
It’s a Rhino, great job enjoyed that!!!!
I think you did a great job with the blade and the ditch with not knowing what to do with it. Plus how do you like your power stroke
The broken mirror could have been worse, it could have been mine!
Nice job 👍
Awsome video
I don't think the blade is too big for that machine. I think it's just right. you want that weight to do the cutting, and not just slide across the surface. I think if you angle the blade some, the cutting force will be much reduced. And for snow work, and road crowning, and ditch work, this looks ideal at a steep angle. The tires look low on air though. Are they filled?
Got to watch those mirror munching Trees, they sneak up on poor little trucks and chomp! there goes another mirror. We have some around here also. LOL
You guys are awesome
TIM, Actually you cut a ditch like a road grader/maintainer would be used on a County/Rural road doing ditch shaping.
"Well.... I was backing up in the driveway..." Heard THAT before!
Wow! Talk about an easy way to cut a swale!! 11:45
Oh yeah, they are great for it! Also restoring a crown on an old dirt/gravel road.
I love you guys so lol. Poor super duty.
Singing in the tractor. I like your style Tim.
That blade is awesome ! As well as the tractor 🚜 bummer on the mirror .
I have same lift height issue with our 8' rear blade. We bought the bison nb80-240 rear blade for our l5460, can cause some clearance issues on uneven ground. I have been thinking to re-weld 3 point linkages lower to be able to raise blade higher!
Camera tip. What about camera on the brush guard up front? On fluffing the dirt pile, when I used a rental, 2035 I think, I would use loader like a guillotine on a frozen snow berm. Get brush guard as close to slope as you can.
Drop bucket angle straight down.
Raise loader above pile and press loader down on pile so bucket slices down. Do it another time or two until bucket cannot go deeper.
Back up a few inches and repeat. Note depth bucket goes in and repeat. Then reverse a few inches. At beginning of pile, raise bucket to cutting depth it had and press in to grab that top half and repeat for lower half then top half etc. great for hard surface piles that need... negotiations?
You done good job with johnny 5 👍
The only thing I could think of when Christie was saying no to riding in the bucket was Home Improvement where Al always says..."I don't think so Tim".
Tim I think you did a great job for the first time
I bet that mirror went "crackle crunch" like those roots too. LOL. Hope it's not to expensive of a fix. But your right it looks like it will cost plenty.
You should do an inside camera on the 5 series
Hey Tim! If it will fit on the trailer, run those front and rear tires all the way out and that tractor will handle a lot better.

(Sounds good to me)
Hydraulic top link. and removig that "stinger" (guage wheel). Know it requires another valve for the link, but it lifts blades quit high is needed. Also scoops and carries or can cut. Nice when building a driveway or fixing one.
Also when shaking black dirt close to those edges where you have solid ground just behind the ditch, don't be afraid to tap your bucket on the ground.
Tim, when loading Johnny 5, fold the loader bucket under to get more room on the back. It will change location and move weight forward more if & when needed. I do it on my 20' tiltbed trailer just to get that little bit extra room on the back.
Great job with the ditch. Not knowing the actual grade you were trying to achieve, looked good on the video. From a maintenance stand point, maybe a shallower taper? But you can probably get that with Vinny. Thanks for the video.
Yes, I spread it out a bit more with Vinny. Didn’t get video.
4 in 1 bucket works pretty good for dumping loose material, won’t work too well with clumpy soil though. You can hold it up higher to get better visibility where the material is falling and you can control the amount that falls with how much you open/close the bucket
Would love to see the controls for the bale on the 5 series sometime when you get a chance. Don’t sweat the mirror that happens to the best of us.
High, How would a single shank ripper work with wings welded to it to make a V cut for busting roots?
I like the Duck Tape idea. LOL
That's crappy about that mirror but such is life right? Coulda been worse... keep up the great content!
Tractor driver singing, you country fellas serenading the ladies (Tim singing at about 9:30) :-)
I'm interested to see what kind of camera options you come up with. I have the same issue with my old tractor loader.
takes some time to get a feel for the lack of visibility on the larger tractors, even a 4510 which is what I have still has very little visibility and it just takes time to get a feel for it
i have the Rhino 850 hydraulic 8' blade on my 4052R cab John Deere the blade is top of the line built like a tank
This is where Vinnie and the power rake would come in handy.
...finished the job with Vinny. Unfortunately, no video.
A nice John Deere power video
Man I wish I could get a bigger tractor.
I subscribed bc I love John deers
Christy is your camera. All those surface roots are the feeders, no surprise they are out there, they usually extend the width of the tree canopy. Hate to say it but digging that ditch is damaging the trees.
great vid I'm trying to buy a 850 Rhino blade for the new John Deere 4052R
i just heard in the video where you said johnny 5 is too small for that blade... it really is.. we have 2 like that on the farm and use em behind 180 and 225 hp tractors
hope the trees dont mind the severed roots but looks like the blade does a good job
When you are dumping the load of dirt you should put the throttle in 1.5 rpms so you get more hydraulic power to the bucket so you can bump it better.
But I really like how your not afraid to use your equipment however you need to to get a job done.
Sorry to see the Mirror get broken. The Jobsite is coming along.
I work at a ford dealership and would be happy to get you a price on the mirror.
@@thejetking haha more like price them out... dealer can be cheaper on some things.
Bummer on the mirror dude !! That’s a big cha-ching mistake there. Definitely over a grand for a whole mirror
Hi Tim,
The blade is about the right width for the tractor. In situations where normal level angle grading is being performed, the extra 6"-12" on each side should be equal or a bit more than the tractor width.
I was also wondering if the gauge wheel should have been used to keep the blade at a consistent blade depth of cut.
I mentioned this I think. I don’t have enough SCV’s for the gauge wheel.
Hey Tim you can get that whole mirror assembly for about a 1/3 of the cost on eBay. I did the same thing went to the dealer to get parts and it was outrageous went on eBay (because the mirror is not made by ford) but by a independent and found it and saved a bundle
is that the stock bucket for the tractor it looks to narrow for it
I'm thinking the 1540 means 15° of tilt and 40° of angle ? Nice piece of equipment 👍
All of Rhino's blades have the same angles - here's a link I posted on the model comparison above
www.rhinoag.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Heavy_Rear_Blades_lo_res.pdf
i think a 6 ft blade without the tail wheel but have the other functions would fit that tractor perfect
i have a landpride Q15 quick hitch i found out you need a shorter top link it will lift higher mine weighs 850 lbs
At this point, was there ballast in the rear tires? How much does that rear implement weigh? The tractor seems to bounce quite a bit from front to rear while doing dirt work
Yeah Tim you’re about right on the cost of the mirror $972 plus don’t forget the Government’s cut. List is about $1500
Tim,
I have been looking at the JD 5075E, there are some things I think could be better, i.e., air conditioning, not many vents, radio, speakers in the corner. But I've always liked JD. Are you happy with the E series?
that mirror that ya busted is going to be very expensive.. i know on my truck the little painted part comes off from the inside and you can put it on whatever mirror you buy.. may save ya a few bucks not having to get it painted... hopefully you can just replace a few parts that broke but i am thinking a whole new mirror is needed.. im sure the camera and light are able to be moved to the new one though.. i doubt that is part of the mirror.. likely a snap in or screw on part... i really don't know that for sure though... im sure by the time you read this you'll have it figured out though... lol
I would use johnny 5 to thread sewing needles to moving mountain just as long as that air conditioner works in this heat... lol suited for it or not that ac makes life better...
For the drainage work I would bring Vinnie in and trench it then lay drainage pipe with a gravel top then you can cover with soil and reseed it so it's all hidden
Surface drainage much cheaper, less maintenance, and more reliable.
Tim I have a idea for you to try on the 5075E. See if you can come up with a rear facing camera system with a decent size monitor you could mount in the cab to help with rear visibility with cab tractors. I would think maybe one with night vision would be a good idea. Your thoughts? EDIT I guess I should have watched the entire video before I suggested the camera system. I see we think a like.
Not to bad for a yankee. Good job Tim.
Tim, If nothing else, our local Ford Dealer will be happy to sell you a new mirror. 💰
Thought maybe you would donate one, David!? Just kidding. Have it on order.
Lol
A smaller blade might not hold up to the roots. Could you shorten the top link to raise the blade higher? Don’t know just wondering.
Short as it goes
Hi Tim
What is the microphone system you guys use where you can hear and talk to each other
Telephone!
Will you add your audio and video equipment to your favorite gear list on Amazon? I'm especially curious about the wireless mic system that seems to let you record and use it to communicate with each other.
It does not do that. We could hear each other via a phone call on our isotunes :-) We do have wireless mic system with two mics...but no ability to hear on the remote end (away from the camera). Make sense?
This worked pretty well for this episode. ...doesn't work on an open station tractor. Too noisy.
@@TractorTimewithTim thanks, makes perfect sense. Still interested in the rest of your AV gear for my own tractor videos but also for recording at our church.
I liked the in tractor communication way better that stopping the tractors to talk to each other and us. Not sure if you just used your phones or some other radio headset but it makes for a much better video in my opinion
At least ‘different’. With the cab tractor, we have an entirely different dynamic. Both positive and negative.
We used the telephone, and two wireless mics. The isotunesaudio headsets helped with the hands free phone part.
Don't feel bad Tim. I only had my F 250 Super Duty only 2 weeks when I tossed a 4" diameter pvc pipe into the back of my truck and it bounced off a rubber garbage can and went through my back window.
i did the almost the same thing once.. well a few times.. first i locked my key in my f250 and rather than calling pop a lock and spending a bunch of money i decided to remove the back glass.. everything was going well until i starting prying on it with a cresset wrench and it shattered.. didn't bother me all that much because i wanted to replace the back glass with a sliding rear window and already had one at home from another truck... i put that one in and like a idiot i took my tool box out of the back of the truck for some reason and had my pressure washer in the back.. i hit the brakes on the truck and it came through my new glass.. now im on my 3rd back glass in my truck and once i was tossing a fiber glass boat in my uncles truck and sent it through his back glass... hopefully i won't get the chance to add to this story with my new truck... lol
Look for that mirror on eBay!
It seems like a lot of times you're running not running the machines at full throttle, any reason for that? Seems like it would put more strain on the hydraulic pumps when they aren't getting enough juice
No need to run full throttle, especially on the larger machines. Need the nice slow/steady approach.
Wait till you get to the 6ms or even a 5115r you can drive through anything
Do you have multiple hieght holes to attach the top link on the tractor. If so move the top link lower on the tractor. And either way shorten your top link a little bit more that will lift the back more
Ha! Yea, the top link is short as it can go, and both arms are cranked all the way up.
@@TractorTimewithTim well can you get a shorter top link and is there multiple holes on the tractor or no
Could have sworn i just saw you on tv at the ND GA football game.
Ha! Nope!
@@TractorTimewithTim everyone has a twin somewhere I guess.
